Report: Rumor flies that Brett Favre will forego ankle surgery

NFL_favre4.jpgWe suppose at this point that we can go back to last year’s stories regarding Brett Favre’s will-he-or-won’t-he stance regarding whether to have surgery on a partially ruptured biceps tendon and replace the phrase “partially ruptured biceps tendon” with “ankle.”

According to Charley Walter of the St. Paul Pionner Press, whose “Don’t Print That” feature is received by many readers with the mantra, “Won’t Read That,” Favre won’t be having the ankle surgery that he reportedly needs (unless, of course, he doesn’t) in order to play football for a 20th season.

Walters calls his report merely a “hot rumor,” one that had not made its way to our mongering ears.  Either way, we’re operating under the assumption that Favre will play in 2010.  And we won’t believe that he’s not playing until he doesn’t show up and play.

    May as well put a target on the ankle then. There’s his first of many excuses for poor play this coming season.

  3. yomomma says: May 12, 2010 2:45 PM

    Now, we are starting to get some real newsworthy stories. We need to keep the Favre reports, rumors and speculations coming.

  4. nerd says: May 12, 2010 2:46 PM

    He will play. This is a fake injury, just like the excuse he had last year for blowing games for the Jets.

    It will change by tomorrow and several times after that.

  7. PACKBACKER says: May 12, 2010 2:52 PM

    Every article about Favre is the same, he is not going to play unless he decides to play. Nobody cares, the Vikes won’t be in the Super Bowl with or without Favre. Maybe if there were Super Bowls in colder climates that would help Favre retire. Favre has the stats to be considered for best QB ever. He has the personality to be considered the biggest ass ever! He needs to just walk away and take the records with him!

  8. Madcity says: May 12, 2010 2:55 PM

  18. rydendonkeys says: May 12, 2010 3:13 PM

    He could announce his comeback 15 minutes before the season opener in New Orleans, and be better than 95% of the QBs in the league.
    lol at the fact Adrian Peterson is the reason the Vikings did not win that game in New Orleans…
    Go figure.
    And props to Florio for constantly banging the rock on how a Peterson fumble (or 3) would cost the Vikes in a huge game.

  19. JDVIKES34 says: May 12, 2010 3:14 PM

    HAHA I wish the Vikes and Brett would just come out publically and say what everybody already knows. Brett’s Coming back but he’s not going to mankato for training camp. Instead he’s doing just as he did last year, he’ll wait until the absolute last moment and say, “oh yea i’ll get the surgery now, but i won’t be ready until the 3rd pre-season game. Everybody gets mad i just laugh at this crap.

  20. RayDaMayor says: May 12, 2010 3:14 PM

    As Farve reads this, his nuts swell to epic proportions as he’s once again relevant.

  21. Ambrose says: May 12, 2010 3:15 PM

    It is my understanding that if he were to have the surgery now, the recovery period would have made him available in late June. He felt that was too close to actually being able to particiapte in training camp, so he is postponing the surgery until he is certain won’t be healed until he can show up on the morning of the first game of the season. More importantly, he has been assured that everyone in Minnesota is OK with that, team personnel and fans alike…..that is how special he is. Minihapless….big city dreams with village idiot realities.

  22. last starfighter says: May 12, 2010 3:16 PM

    The Saints gave every team in the league a blue-print for beating the vikings, hit favre again and again. 18years ago a good beating actually elevated his level of play. Now not so much.

  23. bogmon says: May 12, 2010 3:17 PM

    He IS definitely coming back…all this rumour mill b.s. is just to keep the NFL faithful reading and watching in the slow season…
    Even if he comes back a shell of his former self you know his ego will not let him sit out after the season he ruined last year.
    The Favre needs redemption…and the Minne’snow’ta fans want to stroke him off for one more season.
    I hope Nick Barnett makes good on his promise and does crush him this season…unlike last season when the Packers D got about as much penetration as an impotent theoretical physicist.

    Umm….Favre was never a great quarterback. He was a very good quarterback. He is a top 25 all-time quarterback…but it’s not like he’s a top-10 guy. You don’t end multiple seasons by throwing an INT in a crucial situation and get consideration as an all-time great.

As a Vikings fan, I love the guy but why can’t he just zip his lip all off season and just show up for week 1 in purple and gold. Harroooo!!!!

  35. Biff Henderson says: May 12, 2010 3:49 PM

  36. shadowman1433 says: May 12, 2010 3:53 PM

  37. JimmySmith says: May 12, 2010 3:54 PM

    Mabye Chilly’s sphincter is too loose to entice Favre to take the pain and punishment for another year, maybe Chilly’s dress selections don’t hold any allure, maybe Favre figured he could drive himself from the airport, who can tell what Favre is thinking?
    But that’s the problem with any narcissist, you just can’t predict which direction their ego will go.
    But the Viking fans are just learning what the Packer fans went through for about 5 straight years, his ego means more to him than the team and in the end, what do you get? A season ending INT. He is all yours.

    the very common implication when jared allen and schuab are mentioned in the same sentence is that allen purposely hit him.
    but you didn’t imply that with your post? you were just stating your observation that allen hit schuab twice. yeah, right. you carefully pick your words so you can deny you ever implied it. and you were responding to a comment about putting a target on favres ankle. sounds intentional to me. you did imply it, or you wouldn’t have posted it.

    The vikings haven’t had ANY kind of success throughout their entire history. I guess seeing a qb like Favre playing on your team gives you a woody, but the bottom line is he choked-again, and the queens add another year of Uff Da! (or whatever it is they say) to their sorry history.

He proved his point, aaron rodgers proved mccarthy and thompsons point, and now its all over.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    YOU my friend are the reason for our “distorted view”. No Packer fan I know would ever say that last year Favre didn’t have his 1st or 2nd best season (statistically) ever.
    If your referring to people who talk about all his picks, you missing the point.
    The thing about most Packer fans is this:
    After he retired and went to the Jets it was split 50/50
    After he retired and went to the Vikes it went about 80/20 (and by 80/20 I mean about 80% of Packers fan considered him a jerk and an afterthought, and the other 20% remained clasped very tightly to his taint)
    Most Packers fans I know had the thought of mind that as long as the Vikes don’t win a Super Bowl, we’d be fine with getting to watch you guys have to go through the current lame-ass day time drama you know find yourself in (which reminds me, congrats on the two regular season wins!).
    Getting to see a QB end 3 consecutive seasons on game-ending INT’s for three different teams, pretty unprecedented.
    Getting to see him do it for one of you rivals, a rival that is the NFL’s face for choking, priceless.
    Why doesnt Favre just come out and say what he’s really thinking? He wants to play, he just doesnt want to particapate in training camp. The Vikings are allowing him to have his way, I am sure they wont mind.
    I laugh at all the idiot puker fans that Favre is holding us Viking fans “hostage”. No, he did that to you puker fans. He was pissed at Thompson and McCarthy in getting Rodgers and that entire mess. Hey puker fans…THAT WAS YOUR MESS!!
    We’ll take the Favre “mess” of 33TDs, and 7Ints and his best passing % EVER!! We’ll take that EVERY YEAR!!!
    Sounds like sour grapes puker fans. More funny yet, why don’t you win ONE playoff game with your boy Rodgers. I guess he’s been in the league for 5 years now, and let’s see: ZERO PLAYOFF WINS.
    Completely hilarious seeing Rodgers “kick” your playoff hopes against a pretty average Cardinals team last year.
    Hey, we know we Favre is 2-0 against the pukers, so expect the hate…..GOTTA LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!
    A lot of Packer fans DO hope he comes back so we can have another chance at beating him. Still can’t figure out why Viking fans love him so much. You could’ve gone to the Super Bowl if it hadn’t been for that interception. I’d be mad as hell at him!! He’ll do it again, mark my words! Then will you finally realize what Packer fans realize. And if Viking fans think he really cares about them….good luck. So did Packer fans and what did he do TO us???
    the last pass of Favres last 3 seasons were INTs
    ————————
    I’m not sure I agree with this. I guess it depends on your definition of the word “pass”.
    Favre’s last passing attempt with the Jets was an illegal forward pass. His last legal pass attempt with the Jets was an INT. As was his last pass for the Packers. And the Vikings. And the Falcons.
    Do you mean the same average Cardinals team that beat the Vikings 30-17?
    No, it was Favre’s mess. He retired and waited 4 months to decide to come back, long after his job had been given to Rodgers. Thompson did an admirable job deal with the mess Favre left.
    And the Vikings have played 49 seasons in the NFL and have ZERO SUPERBOWL WINS to show for it. Congratulations on that. Based on pure chance they ought to have 2 titles so far. Factor in that they’ve been to the big game 4 times and it shows the franchise has choked every time they’ve had a shot.
    “Pretty average”? They kicked the Queens’ asses, didn’t they? I guess that makes the Queens less than average?
    The same average Cardinals that beat Favre 30-17 ?
    I have to laugh every time I see a Favre post, he is, he isn’t. He must flip a coin every morning until preseason to figure out which way the story will go. I do believe media is a big part of it, but 2.7423 retirements will also make the media do stuff like that. John Elway didn’t really have that problem.
    The Vikings DID beat the Packers 2 times last year and they do had a hell of a team, but that was the 1st half of the season when those games occured still learning 3-4 defense, the 2nd half of the season the Packers were greatly improved and the only 2 loses they had were vs. the teams that were in the superbowl the year before and that was still before they could give Rodgers protection. Aaron Rodgers WILL WIN A SUPERBOWL before his career is done. I really hope it’s with GB, all he needs is the time.
    Favre threw an INT for the Vikings in a situation where an incomplete pass also puts the game in OT. Hell even a completed pass guarantees nothing. The teams were tied before and after his 2 minute drive attempt. Both teams still have about a 50/50 chance before the coin flip. The team’s drive was a wash overall. Same as running out of time or punting.
    Rodgers literally handed the game to the Cardinals in OT. Rodgers played terrible the first half. He did play great the second half. In OT he promptly handed the ball, or kicked it rather, to the opposing team’s DE. If he doesn’t do this, the team might win. If he does do this, they lose instantly.
    Yet Packers fans all off season clamor about how Favre threw the game away and we should be mad about him “choking”. You just have to love that Kool-Aid logic, lol. Er, duh guys, you’re season ended on a more extreme case of QB chokeage. Do you chumps ever realize that all these posts are to convince yourselves of something, and not us?
    Vikings fans know it was slippery hands, poor officiating, and bad luck that sunk our ship. Not Favre’s interceptions. He played well in the game despite being hit illegally several times.
    Favre was responsible for 3 turnovers and only one TD. Rodgers was responsible for two turnovers and 5 TDs.
    You can’t say an incomplete pass puts the game into OT. An incomplete pass gives the team a chance to kick for the win. A 5 yard gain down the sideline gives the team a very good chance to win. A 5 yard completion down the sideline does the same.
    Ryan Longwell was 8 of 8 on 50+ yard FGs in 2008/2009. Would it have been unlikely he’d make that FG? Absolutely. Is it beyond the realm of possibility? Absolutely not. Favre gave away the chance for them to win the game. There’s no way to spin that. A FG attempt from 55 or 57 is hands down better than a terrible, Pop Warner-style INT.
  87. jimicos says: May 14, 2010 11:02 AM
    And don’t talk to me about illegal hits. Favre wasn’t hit illegally on the play that ended his team’s chances. Rodgers was.
