The Chargers are just using a little common sense. There’s no reason to move on this as they control Merriman right now. Plus, the character issues give the Chargers pause (that wouldn’t be as much of a factor if he had had a monster year, so there is just a bit of hypocrisy there).
Bottom line, I hope Merriman has an all pro season and proves AJ wrong. In fact, I would imagine that AJ wouldn’t mind being wrong either as that scenario would be a good thing for the Chargers in this season. But he’s got to prove he’s fully healed and past all the nagging stuff that plagued him. He played to an above average not superstar level this past year, so there is no reason to pay him until he proves he can still do it. I hope he can

All the insightful steroid comments show
how caught up to 2006 most of the posters
in here are. Merriman came back strong after
that…it’s been the knee surgery that’s held
him back since. Out almost all of ’08, trying to get
back to 100% in ’09. He was better than average
last year…often double teamed. There’s reason
to think that–if FULLY healed–he could be
a real force again in 2010.
All of those of you fixated on 2006
(and who obviously haven’t seen most of his snaps)
just keep broadcasting your ignorance, and thinking
that your ’06 ‘roid lines are still clever or insightful.

Florio’s point is right on the money. But the bigger question is not why the Chargers don’t offer him the contract, it is how you expect to build a championship team by continually letting quality players walk away and settle for compensatory picks in exchange. Brees for a third round pick? Turner for a fifth round pick?
On a team with a head coach who does not believe in giving the “rah rah” speech instead believing it is up to the player to motivate themselves, don’t you need some Merriman’s? Or Edward’s? Or Seau’s? Or Harrison’s? The quickest way to be sown the door in SD is to actually be leader.

Shawne, let your play dictate how many 0′s are on that check. A few years ago it would have been a nice payday but last year….not so much.
This year for Shawne is what last year was for LT. Shawne better put up the numbers and the domination that he claims or he most likely won’t be a charger. He went from the best LB in the league to just a really good run defender.

It’s a matter of time when he leaves San Diego. When they drafting Larry English, it was a sign that Merriman might have played his last season with the Bolts. It’s better off with these two going their seperate ways.

Not being fair to Merriman?
You think the Chargers’ demand for a first-round pick was too high.
If the original story is to be believed, teams were willing to meet that price. But it was MERRIMAN’s (or at least his agent’s) high salary demand that nixed the trade.
To me, it sounds like Merriman wanted a salary that NO team was currently willing to meet, including the Chargers. Maybe that has a whole lot to do with the fact that Merriman has not yet…or may never…return to his prior elite level of play.
If he does this year, perhaps the Chargers will give him the contract he wants.

If he walks SD will likely get get a 3rd rounder as a compensatory pick anyway so asking for a 1st rounder isn’t so unreasonable. As posted, the guy jobbed SD out of 1 1/2 yrs of his contract by not having surgery when advised and another 4 mos for his suspension. Then you want them to lose even more value by trading him for a 2nd rnd pick?
SD needs a pass rusher of similar ability hence the 1st rounder which would have been used in this year’s draft for a replacement or they just keep him. He is getting $3+M on the highest tender which is what he would be making under a new contract so he is hardly being treated unfairly.
It is on him not SD to regain his form and get another big payday next year.

I think the Chargers need to pursue this issue with Merriman in a different manor. They should seriously sit down with him and explain the circumstances.
I know Merriman is so eager to sign a long term deal, but even he should understand that not just the Chargers, but all of the NFL teams are waiting to see how he response on the field this season.
Now that he’s had his knee surgery, had a full off season to recover. He has that second chance to either prove that he’s still the “Lights Out” player he was when he entered the league, or he’s not that same elite guy anymore.
I for one think Merriman is still an elite player. He showed it on the field last season, no he didn’t have the DD sack numbers that we are used to seeing, but he showed he can still play. He was often doubled, still made plays against the run and still has the respect of the defense. I hope the Chargers don’t trade him before the season starts, I hope he remains a charger, step on the field and prove his worth and than get signed long term to the Chargers. Merriman is far from done, he’s still a very dominant player that opposing teams still respect.
LightsOut, if you want a long term deal, prove it on the field this season.

There are two factions here, buyers and sellers. The seller can ask whatever they want for the item or items for sale and it is then up to the buyer to decide if they want to buy or if the price is to high. Since when does a half-assed blogger decide what price is fair? If the price is to high the market will decide not Florio.

Chargers have a history of giving solid deals to players that deserve it.
Rivers, Tomlinson in his prime. You take a guy like Merriman, and you offer the Chargers what???
If he performs, he will either get his deal from SD, or another team will decide to pony up enough to intice AJ Smith to trade him.
Not sure what the point of the PFT TV story was- I like the site, i passes the time, but I really could care less about what Florio thinks about this. It’s a business decision, plain and simple. Not really a right and wrong answer here. Just posturing and jockeying for position by Merriman, the Chargers front office, and prospective other teams.

Boohoo for Merriman. Maybe he shouldn’t be doing steroids? Maybe he should have had knee surgery in the offseason 2 years ago rather than missing the year like a dumb jock. And of course…there’s Tila Tequila…no tears should be shed for how the Chargers are dealing with this goofball. And if he smartened up a bit…maybe they’d give him the deal he covets.
