If Cowboys receiver Roy Williams were playing as well as he was expected to play when the team gave up a first-round pick, a third-round pick, and more for him during the 2008 season, the Cowboys wouldn’t have felt compelled to draft Dez Bryant with a 2010 first-round selection.
Despite the handwriting that has been sandblasted into the wall, Williams remains resolute regarding his role.
“This ain’t my first rodeo,” Williams said, according to Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “I got recruited [to
Texas] with B.J. [Johnson] and Sloan Thomas, so those are two top-notch
guys. I came in and did my thing. I was the third one on the totem pole
in that deal, and I came out No. 1. I don’t really see it as a
competition thing. I see it as us getting better.
“But I know in
the back of my mind and the back of his mind, [Bryant] wants to play, the only
way he’s going to play is to get No. 11 off the field, and that’s going
to be tough to do. But it’s going to make us better as a football
team.”
Williams also vows to stop dropping so many passes. “It won’t even be half,” Williams said regarding the number of just-ate-popcorn moments from last year. “Do you want to take that
bet? I won’t even come close. Promise you.”
We’re not sure what would be worse. Williams continuing to be a mediocre player, or Williams suddenly getting better because he feels like he’s being challenged to stay in the starting lineup. If it’s the latter, it means that Williams relies too much on external motivations to get the most out of his abilities, and that’s one of the worst traits an athlete can have.
Meanwhile, when Williams says that this “ain’t his [first] rodeo,” he’s leaving out a certain Megatron calf roping in Detroit, the one that made Williams irrelevant. Indeed, less than two years after Calvin Johnson joined the team, the Lions opted to ship Williams back to Texas.
Even the Lions wouldn’t have been stupid enough to give up on a first-round wideout with talent. For now, the decision to dump Williams remains one of the wisest moves the Lions have made since the retirement of Barry Sanders.
For the Cowboys, trying too hard to justify a failed trade would be one of the franchise’s biggest blunders.
Jerry Jones will eventually admit to this mistake. Roy won’t be with the Cowboys beyond this year.
Which part of the rodeo is it where you get your game completely obliterated by an unknown receiver midseason?

It’s easy to cut your drops by more than half when you can’t get on the field.
Yeah, good luck with that, Roy. Just like you fended off Miles Austin. Lions were the perpetrators of one of the biggest fleecings since the Herschel Walker trade where the Vikings gave up a pick for each one of his personalities.
B.J. [Johnson] woooow.
Hadn’t heard that name in forever.
Guess he never became anything.
Guy went to my high school’s rival, killed us my fresh/soph years.
Whatever gets this guy going…I’m all for it!! If it takes a chip on his shoulder from the Boys drafting a highly talented player that can push this envelope, then so be it. I do know this, if Roy plays up to 85% of his potential, we are going to be an extremely dangerous team!!! Write that down!!
I say Bryant is No. 2 by game 8.
there’s way too many roy williams’ in sports. are we talking about the b-ball coach here?!?!?!?!?!
anyone want to drop a bellicheat in this post?
These guys that think that words mean something….prove it by your actions. The rest is hollow and he’s embarassing himself.
“This ain’t my first rodeo,”
Someone tell this clown he’s supposed to be playing football, not roping calfs.

I have a hard time believing this. He’ll spin it off that he was misinformed by his football people as to Roy Williams’ talent, but he will never admit that it was his mistake.
Whatever gets this guy going, I’m all for it!! If it takes my Boys to draft a high-profile WR with talent and upside in the 1st round to get this cat motivated then so be it!!! I do know this, if Roy plays up to 85% of his potential and Dez does what he’s capable of, we are going to be an absolute nightmare come game day!!!!
“This ain’t my first rodeo”
Something about an old steers/queers joke’s comin’ to mind. Notice the TEXANS are the ones with the horns on their heads…
we like roy. we like roy
-senior citizens in the back
Mite not be his first rodeo but he couldn’t beat out Calvin Johnson and he couldn’t hold off Miles Austin (who????) but yet he brags that he beat out BJ Johnson and a Sloan Thomas…..now those are two household names in the NFL! There are 31 other teams who are hoping that the Pillsbury Doughboy Wade believes in you as much as Jerry Botox did and has you on the field instead of D. Bryant.
Ummm.. Roy.. you had problems standing out in DETROIT.. What makes you think you can do so on a real team?
He right about one thing, he will drop ZERO passes this year….why?
You can’t drop a pass if the ball isn’t thrown to you…..
What an idiot.
“Even the Lions wouldn’t have been stupid enough to give up on a first-round wideout with talent.”
But Jerruh is stupid enough to trade for one without talent. You know you suck when a crack baby is about to cost you your job.
I believe him when he says he will cut his number of drops in half, mostly because the number of passes he gets thrown will drop by 75%. Have fun in your new role on special teams, Roy.
Okay, MrHumble you did make an excellent point. To save himself the embarrasment, he should have definately left the Sloan Thomas and BJ comments out of the equation. That was stupid. Roy should be caddying for Romo as we speak. Maybe in between holes at the Byron Neslson Classic, Roy could run some routes on the fairways to work on that chemistry they have been so desperately lacking!!!……….. And if he drops a ball, Romo should make him run sprints up and down a 530 yard par 5 and write a check for all of the wasted contract $ he has received and let Tony hand deliver it to Jerry!!!
I’m so embarrassed by that trade. Knowing you could get an Anquan Boldin, Santonio Holmes, and Brandon Marshall for FAR LESS than what Dallas gave. It’s disturbing really. It shows how little Skeletor knows about football.

Ask Asante Samuel.

They ditched TO (Thank God) one year after renegotiating his contract. This will be similar. You’re right, Jerry won’t admit that he screwed up, but the end result will be that Roy is gone.
“Roy Williams vows to fend off Dez Bryant”
Good luck with that!
Think the Lions got Brandon Pettigrew 30 rec, 346 yds, 2tds season ending injury on Thanksgiving, Derrick Williams 6 rec 52yrds, and Aaron Brown 27 carries for 131 yds, and 9 rec for 84 yds and 1 td…….Looks like both teams can only brag about potential so far from the deal
They did not exactly dump him, they traded him for a 1st, 3rd and 5th I think, in other words a lot more than the Cards got for Boldin or the Jets gave up for Santonio.
T.O. got dumped from Dallas.
Williams is still a pretty tough cover. He did not put up a lot of stats, but the O was pretty good with him on it. He is over paid, but maybe not compared to DHB or Javon Walker.
He and Jamarcus Russell should form their own sandlot team.
The only way Decoy Roy will beat out Dez Bryant is if Bryant gets arrested for marijuana possession, carrying guns, DUI/DWI, domestic violence, failing to pay child support, or whatever else these athletes get in trouble for. Decoy Roy has had his chance and failed miserably.
Not a good trade for either team, Roy has one year or less to prove himself or Dez will have his job. With Romo, Austin, Williams, Bryant, Crayton, Ogleetree, Witten, Bennett, Jones, Barber and Choice, the Cowboys have alot of Weapons. Watch out NFC!.
Vows to stop dropping passes ? He had 8 drops all last yr. That’s NOT the problem. The p[roblem was getting open so he has the opportunity to have a pass thrown his way.
This is exactly the kind of post we expected from Flo.
With Roy Williams, The Cowboys went 3-0 vs The Eagles, won a playoff game and The NFC East. I’ll bet you hope they dont hold onto him , Flo.
“Well, there you go, Ladies and Gentlemen, that was Roy Williams from down Odessa way. Had a time of 11 days, 4 hours, 21 minutes, before he got thrown off in this year’s competition. Good luck in the future, Roy. Give the old boy a big Texas hand!”.
Roy, say Waiver Wire eight times really fast.
lamajet….to put Roy Williams in the same failed class as Jamarcus Russell shows you to be a dope. Get off this site NOW!!
“For now, the decision to dump Williams remains one of the wisest moves the Lions have made since the retirement of Barry Sanders.”
what? that made no sence at all
Sorry, but the trade hasn’t proven to be good OR bad for either team.
I don’t know why everyone keeps thinking we got a bunch of Pro-Bowlers for Roy, and Roy just sucks!
In fact, the Lions got a Tight End that had his knee blown out, a Wide Reciever that can only fumble and run the wrong routes, and a Running Back that will be sitting fourth string behind Jahvid Best and others.
Roy was good for the Lions, we just leveraged his value for more players. They aren’t proving to be better or worse than Roy, just more of them.
Personally, I liked Roy and thought that he was fantastic here in Detroit. Drops are partially a result of the ball not being in the right spot. There were COUNTLESS passes that Roy touched the ball and tipped it to the defense. I thought that he shouldn’t have even made a play on the ball, and less damage would have been done. That, and communication issues with the hall of fame QB’s we have here in Detroit, were NOT all his fault!
How long has he been working with Romo?
Just watch. This guy always showed me that he has the skills, the heart, and the desire to be a top wideout. If he and Romo can develop some chemistry, he will be awesome (unfortunately) for the Cowpokes….
“OL ROY” is good blocker, but he is just to damn rich to get hurt while going for the ball.

good point…Williams was more productive than the 4th & 5th receivers for the Giants…
rec-avg YPC
Williams 38-15.7
Smith 107-11.4
Hicks 47-16.8
Manningham 57-14.4
exactly what was your point?
Williams is a marshmellow
BTW, nice one yesterday Rasta bringing in wives and dogs into a Dallas Cowboys post.
Loosen those dreads and put down that spliff…if you even know what that means.
As to your comments on Roy…huh? Yep, being rich is why his production isn’t what has been expected. It could never be something like a lack of talent or being exposed since he is no long a cream of the crop on a team like the Lions.
Yep…assclown.
roy always shows alligator arms going over the middle
and since he isnt really fast… he will be relegated to the slot
Everyone in Detroit knew Roy was no good when we shipped him out of town. It still baffles me that people outside of Detroit didn’t know that. I guess if all you see of him is a couple highlight catches on Sports Center, you won’t know about the easy passes he drops. Dez Bryant will be past this guy by week 1 and Roy will probably be looking for new employment in 2011.
Jerry Jones will make sure that Dez sees the ball and Roy wont just sit there and be happy with it
Expect drama when Roy drops passes and complains that he isnt getting it enough
