Jaguars continue to put public pressure on David Garrard

Remember that speculation we passed along last week that Luke McCown could wind up pushing David Garrard in Jacksonville for playing time?

It’s hard to call it speculation when the offensive coordinator is the one talking.

“This is a time for Luke to show he can compete with Dave,” Dirk Koetter said this week to Jaguars.com.  “He’s athletic,
he’s sharp. Can he push Dave when they’re hitting you for real? We like
what we see out of Luke in the meeting room and what we saw of him in
mini-camp.”

Well, then.  Koetter also revealed McCown split snaps at the team’s recent camp, another indication he could get a serious look as a player.

The “motivate Garrard through the media” tour just made another stop, after the team’s head coach and owner both said they wanted more from their quarterback.

We’re not sure McCown is such a great candidate to push Garrard, but he’s the only option the Jaguars have.  From the sound of things, Garrard is going to have to keep his team around .500 all year or risk losing his job.

    Luke Mcown? David Gararrd?
Where’s all the Brian Cushing news!

I think Jamarcus Russell is available. He might push Garrard more than McCown.

Sounds like Garrard is pulling a Jamarcus.

Weren’t the Jags in prime position to make the playoffs last year? Garrad is not the problem… Mike Sims-Who??

Garrard is a decent QB, he isnt great but the offense is just centered around the run so that doesnt help his numbers.
With that said, the few times he has to throw the ball, he SHOULD be accurate and make the big plays when needed…..except….that doesnt always happen.

    Gregg,
quit wasting my time with this story about actual NFL stuff.
I want to know what Brian Cushing is doing RIGHT NOW.
    thanks.

Nothing wrong with competition, I want to see the best product a team can produce on field.

  10. kvh59 says: May 14, 2010 5:20 PM

there has to be an undrafted rookie who could challenge him more than McCown

  11. Dezone says: May 14, 2010 5:22 PM

How come there hasn’t been a FAVRE or Cushing story on here in the last 3 seconds?

  12. realitypolice says: May 14, 2010 5:27 PM

Ummm………when I read that it sounds like the OC is putting pressure on McCown to look good somewhere other than the meeting room. If anything, it sounds like a dig at him.
But that interpretation certainly wouldn’t be as controversial as yours, and we know controversy drives page hits, so you go right ahead there, mister.

  13. Slow Joe says: May 14, 2010 5:31 PM

Being a Buc fan, I can tell McCown is seriously streaky. At times he can look like Joe Montana out there. At other times he can look like a deer in the headlights.

    There’s always Leftwich. HA!

Garrard receiving competition in 2010 should be viewed no differently than the fact that Kyle Orton is receiving competition in 2010.
Both are unflashy guys whose best asset is avoiding big mistakes and enabling a team’s other phases to win the game.
Garrard had a better running game.
Orton had a better everything else (D, WRs, O-line)
With Brandon Marshall gone, and with Sims-Walker a year grown into his role as his teams’ #1 receiver, maybe you see their numbers even out a bit more.
The ’08 Bears more closely resembled last year’s Jaguars than the ’09 Broncos in terms of weaponry and protection in the passing game, and Orton couldn’t complete over 60% of his passes there, something Garrard has accomplished 4 years in a row.
In addition, Garrard had the same YPA as Orton last year (7.0), has had pretty good YPA the previous 3 years (7.2, 7.7, 6.8) and added 300 yards of rushing each of the past two seasons.
I think that if Jacksonville had been in the chase with Washington and Chicago for Cutler and placed 2 first rounders, a 3rd rounder and their current starter on the plate, McDaniels might have easily chose the Jaguars as his trading partner. Garrard is a better game managing QB than Orton but is on a team that hasn’t had the defense quite as good as Denver’s last season, much less 00 Ravens or 02 Buccaneers, to give him a lead to manage in playoff games.

Blew their chance with Timmy Tebow, that’s their own fault.

  18. boredsilly says: May 14, 2010 5:55 PM

ok, if you’re going to post something about the Jags, AND quote an article from their website, why not quote the part that speaks DIRECTLY about David….like this one from the same article:
“We’ve got to play better around Dave (Garrard),” Koetter said. “If you look at the elite passing teams in the NFL, the quarterback and the receivers are thinking one step ahead of the defense. We’ve been really trying to eliminate the gray. If it’s this, we’re doing this. For Dave, he’s clearly ‘The Man.’ He’s got hungry receivers. Dave’s been doing a great job in quarterback school and in mini-camp of communicating. With that said, our bread and butter is 32. We all know that.”

You should know better by now. That part of the article isn’t nearly controversial enough to draw the web hits and posts that Florio needs to deliver the numbers NBC requires. (relax- I know Florio didn’t write it- but it is still his web site)
As I mentioned in my previous post, nothing in the quotes Rosenthal DID use, and certainly nothing from the paragraph you reprinted puts any pressure on David Garrard. This controversy is a complete fabrication by Rosenthal, through his editor and boss, Mike Florio.

  20. ZombieRevolution says: May 14, 2010 6:10 PM

Isn’t this like Greg pushing Florio to be a better journalist?

  21. brasho says: May 14, 2010 8:21 PM

Anybody that doesn’t know how talented McCown is or that he can/will be a legitimate starter in the league should refrain from showing their stupidity and posting. The guy has first class QB skills and athleticism, if he gets a legit shot he COULD be a very good starter. His biggest problem has always been being hesitant to lead receivers and throwing out of rhythm. The best news about him is that once he makes a mistake he doesn’t repeat it… he just has to get the ball out of his hand quicker and avoid some of the sacks.

  22. lvdawg says: May 14, 2010 8:30 PM

Anytime there is an article about the Jags, you can count on some homer crying about “Timmy” Tebow. Get over it Gator Fans! Tebow will follow the same career path as other ‘legendary’ Gator QB’s…..Shane Matthews, Danny Wuerffel, Rex Grossman & the bachelor Jesse Palmer. Maybe if he was around when he should have been picked, i.e. the 3rd or 4th round they would have chosen him. But they didnt so go emulate your hero and cry me a river

did any1 see the pro bowl ????? i dont know why the jags think there problem is at QB its on the defensive and offensive lines plain and simple

  24. dan073eb says: May 14, 2010 8:46 PM

    @ kvh59:
There is a undrafted rookie, his name is Trevor Harris, and i think he’s a sleeper coming in to OTA’s and training camp. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he makes the team.

  25. smithopher says: May 14, 2010 11:34 PM

Battle of the basement. Neither of these QB’s deserve a starting job. Garrard started that one season not throwing interceptions just cause he wasn’t throwing much. When you have Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor, that ball is getting carried 40+ times. The game plan was let Fred Taylor run at the defense a handful of times then let Jones-Drew try to take off down the field and pick up yardage. Worked well too. Beat the Steelers in Pittsburgh twice that season. Wasn’t because of Garrard though. As for McCown, has he ever done anything well? He started for Miami for a bit. WHOAAAAA. As a Jets fan, I’ll tell you, after Marino they haven’t had anybody worth a damn at QB. This guy Henne might be the real deal, but nobody else they’ve had for 10 years was. Pennington had one good season. Then he got OWNED by Ed Reed in the wildcard round. I’d bring in JaMarcus Russell at this point and see if he can do something with a change of scenery and lack of Al Davis.

  26. jaxdolfan says: May 15, 2010 12:40 AM

The fact that Luke McCown can push any starter for a job says a lot.
Make all the excuses that you want for Garrard, but he is what he is. An average QB that can play mistake free football if you don’t ask him to throw the ball. You can complain about the lack of receivers, but until they sign that 10 foot tall guy that can catch those balls that sail 5 feet over the receivers heads when they are wide open, Garrard won’t be able to win the game when it needs to be done with the passing game. Maurice Jones Drew won all the games for the Jags last season.
Garrard is a great man, HUUUUGE improvement as the QB of your team in many ways over Leftwich, but not an NFL passer.

  27. dan073eb says: May 15, 2010 12:52 AM

    @smithopher
uh when the hell did Luke McCown start for Miami? What are you smoking? Nice job going off on a tangent about Miami…

    Not enough Lebron James news.

  29. CanadianVikingFan says: May 15, 2010 4:36 AM

Somehow this can all be related to Brian Cushing and Brett Favre.

  30. Jag4Life says: May 15, 2010 10:57 AM

Luke McCown isn’t pushing Garrard. Garrard is pushing Gararrd. He knows he’s on a short leash this season. Personally I’m a fan of Gararrd, but there are some things that he can improve on just like most other QB’s. But everything starts up front and and our O-line had two rookie tackles starting last season. With a year under their belt I think protection will be adequate enough to allow Garrard to be able to progress through his reads for a change. I really believe this team is taking an “US AGAINST THE WORLD” approach this year. Althoug I’m not excited about the return of Del Rio and his dinosaur phylosiphy coaching, I am excited about this years team and I’m expecting big things and nothing less.

  31. Slow Joe says: May 15, 2010 11:40 AM

@brasho: No. While those are certainly two problems he needs to address, his biggest problem, by far, is pocket presence. He doesn’t “feel” the rush, doesn’t know how to step up in the pocket, nor throw the ball away.
Many times, I’d see a defensive end take a speed rush, the offensive tackle would push him wide, rendering him harmless, but instead of McCown stepping up in the pocket like a pro QB should automatically do, he takes off from the pocket, and the DE that was out of the play ends end chasing McCown down for a sack.
He’s a fantastic athlete, but whenever I watched him play, that is exactly what he looked like: an athlete playing quarterback.
