JaMarcus Russell looks like a long shot to join the Bengals

We know a few things eight days after JaMarcus Russell was released.

No team is in a hurry to sign him, and Russell doesn’t appear to be in a hurry to get signed.

The Bengals have been mentioned most in connection with Russell because they were one of many teams to place an exploratory phone call to him.  And, well, they are the Bengals.  Compared to the Pacman Jones signing, Russell looks like a logical fit.

Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com, however, calls a marriage with Russell a “long shot.”  The Bengals may want help at backup quarterback, but reportedly don’t have room for a project like Russell.

Bengals tackle Andrew Whitworth used to room with Russell at away games in college, and had some interesting thoughts on his former teammate.

“He’s got to be around people he trusts and going to Oakland was the worst
possible thing that could have happened to him,” Whitworth said. “He
always needs his people around him.  He lost his uncle, the closest person he had for a lifetime next to his
college teammates.”

Why would anyone sign him? Why wouldn’t you rather sign a young guy who actually WANTS to play? He’s not proven enough to be a back up and I’d rather give a young guy a shot as #3. He’s made his bed…

He always needs his people around him??? Who is that? The hamburgler, the planters peanut guy, and a couple of the racing sausages from the brewers games? Jeez, what a biatch!!

So in other words… “He’s very immature and without constant babysitting, he can’t work like a professional.”

He doesn’t care that he will be the biggest NFL draft flop ever. He wants to go home, blow up like a tick, and chill.

Geez, the people in Oakland trusted him with a few million dollars. The problem is he can’t be trusted to do his job.

This moron has it backwards. Going to Oakland made JaCut 39 million dollars. It is Oakland that had the “worst possible thing” happen, and that was dealing with his fat a$$.

Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com writing a story saying the Bengals won’t sign Russell but then including sympathetic statements from Bengals left tackle Andrew Whitworth…..hmmmmmm
It can only mean one thing, the Bengals are hot and heavy to sign Russell. Hobson wrote a piece a week or two before Adam Jones (PacMan) signed explaining how the Bengals weren’t interested. I won’t be surprised at all if the Bengals sign him.

Are you a man or a boy?, we all lose people close to us. What does the clown OL men from the Bungles mean, he needs his people around him.
The person that he describes has 0 leadership qualities and sounds more llike a follower than a leader. The Raiders had to give hime a babysitter 24/7. The dude is lazy and not bright enough to be a top flight NFL QB, talent or not and that is what the Raiders figured out after still having to run a pop warner O in order that Russell could play.
He cannot read a D, call out or change protections and does not know where to go with the ball. He can only make a pass once the receiverr is open and moves in the pocket like a Sperm Whale.

  22. o0tt0o says: May 15, 2010 12:52 AM

thank god the players and owners could not agree on a new CBA…..if they did there woulkd still be a salary cap in place making it prohibitive to get rid of russell….that contract impass saved the raiders from at least 2 more years of hell

What’s the downside of signing him if you don’t give him any guaranteed money? Bring him in to camp and if he can play, keep him around and if not you can cut him with no harm done.

  29. dklein82 says: May 15, 2010 3:05 AM

Yep, the Bengals are signing him, that’s for sure. Just a few weeks prior, right before JR was cut, Whitworth had a totally different tone… now that he’s left the door cracked open, “Yo Kool-Aid!” is going to bust on in.

  30. yellowxdiscipline says: May 15, 2010 4:25 AM

  34. the big bronco says: May 15, 2010 8:09 AM

It’s ok if Russell signs with the Bengals for a little while, but really, he needs to sign a new mega contract with the Raiders again.

  35. QJ1984 says: May 15, 2010 8:22 AM

To be honest it wouldnt surprise me if Russell never saw his way onto another NFL roster and is out of the league. There are a lot of veteran QB’s available if you need a reliable backup. Russell never showed anything as a starter, why would he be trusted to be a good backup? I think Russell’s reputation has been ruined and teams will steer clear of him.
I also dont think Russell has the desire to continue playing, which is another reason teams wont go calling him. He’s probably content walking away with the almost 40 million dollars that Oakland gave him. Hell, if I were a lazy fat slob, I would be. The Bengals probably called him and he probably said, I am taking a break from football right now.

  36. Big Tex says: May 15, 2010 8:36 AM

    @raidersteve413
Steve, buddy, you are absolutely correct. JaMarcus was the whole problem in Oakland. The Raiders were primed to win 3 Super Bowls when he got there. It’s all his fault. Pay no attention to the sieve-like OL, or the coaching merry-go-round, or the lack of a running game, or FA signings like Wilson, Walker, Sands, Kelly, or spending the #7 overall pick on a WR who can’t get open and can’t catch on the off chance that he does, or a defense that gives up 300 yard rushing games and 500 yard total offense games. Now that the Raiders feature the amazing QB duo of Jason “I never had a winning season in Washington” Campbell backed up by Bruce ” I failed in both Tampa and Cleveland” Gradkowski, well, you better be making those hotel reservations for Arlington right now. You’ll want to get a room close to the stadium for the Super Bowl.

The downside is he blows your entire team’s food budget for 3 years.
And “Big Tex”, once your team is riddled with cancer you cut out the deadliest one first. (Al excepted).
If you bothered to watch a game when Gradkowski came in, the entire teams level of play elevated immensely. So, it wasn’t ALL JaCuts fault, it’s that he is supposed to be a leader BY EXAMPLE. And he was… just the wrong kind. That’s a large reason why we lost so many games.

  41. Willy says: May 15, 2010 11:20 AM

To all you guys badmouthing poor Jaburger king. It was not, I repeat not, his fault at all for the Raiders poor performance the last three years. The entire blame lies upon their defense. They allowed (probably intentionally) the other teams to score during the game. You just wait, when Jaburger King goes to a team whose defense allows a zero ppg average for a season, he will definitely lead them to a winning record….at the absolute worst a 10-0-9 (season +playoffs) record. Just think….a 100% won-loss percentage. And, if I am wrong in my analysis, I will gladly buy every one who reads this column a beer at his super bowl (unless it ends in a tie) that year.

I would call that robbery! Truth us that he actually lost out on millions more because of endorsments and future contracts he will not get because of pure lazyness. Logically what you say makes perfect sense. But a lot of front offices/coaches see his physical skill (a/k/a big arm & he is young) and have big enough egos to think ” I CAN FIX HIM…HE WILL PLAY WELL FOR US”. Therefore, I wouldn’t be at all shocked if he gets not just one but another opportunity even if he sucks in his second one.

  53. steely devil hab says: May 16, 2010 5:26 AM

I can’t understand how he got past everything thrown at him on Pro-Day’s??? Did they just ignore it when he looked at diagramed defenses on paper and seeing all the x’s and o’s gleefully replied:
    “Alphagetti!!”
How can a team get fooled like that? Was Lane Kiffin the only one who saw this…?
I guess what I am really saying was – Did everyone on the Raiders coaching staff see this, but Kiffin was the only one with the minerals to step up and say “NO” to Al?
    OR
Since the general opinion on Kiffin is that he’s a self-centered jerk and an idiot – but he noticed what a waste Jamarcus Size Me was…how football saavy was everyone else over there??
    Oh well…
    For what it’s worth; I think that he doesn’t play again – not because teams won’t give him a shot, but it’s more about the money. If the guy wouldn’t;
    1) Stay in shape
    2) Learn the playbook
    3) Stay awake
    4) Lead by example
    5) ______________ (every other thing he needed to do)
For 39 MILLION DOLLAR MENU ITEMS,
Pls then – why would he do it for a measly few hundred thousand??
    (I’m not saying, I’m just saying…)
