Pats bring back Derrick Burgess

Last season, many assumed that the Patriots would not be bringing back Derrick Burgess beyond the expiration of his contract. After more than two months on the open market, Burgess has decided to remain in New England.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that team and player have reached agreement on a one-year deal. Though terms have not yet been reported, Burgess likely didn’t receive a high-dollar deal.

And so he has not yet cashed in since putting together two double-digit sack seasons after being dealt from Philly to Oakland after the 2004 season. His numbers have dissipated over the past three seasons; in his first year with the Patriots following a trade from the Raiders, Burgess had five sacks.

He also was one of the four players sent home by coach Bill Belichick in December after showing up late for work on a day that it was snowing. Of the quartet, Burgess was by far the most contrite.
