Darrelle Revis says he'll take Kyle Wilson under his wing

NFL_revis.jpgJets cornerback Darrelle Revis is one of the best defensive players in the NFL.  And he knows it.  And he’s not afraid of losing that status any time soon.

Revis is sufficiently confident in his status that he’s more than willing to help a newcomer at the position he plays learn his craft.  “I’m going to try to take him under my wing,” Revis said of rookie first-rounder Kyle Wilson, according to Manish Mehta of the Newark Star-Ledger.  “Kyle seems
like a nice guy — a hard worker.”

Revis likes what he has heard from the coaches about Wilson, whom Browns defensive coordinator Rob Ryan supposedly wanted his team to take with the seventh overall pick.

“After that rookie minicamp — we had that week off — but I stayed up
here,” Revis said.  “I was talking to the coaches about him just to see
what they thought.  They say he’s going to help us a lot and he’s a hard
worker.”

Wilson is expected to immediately serve as nickel corner for the Jets.  And if he develops quickly he could quickly render Antonio Cromartie moot as a starter — and as a member of the team.

That’s what I like to hear!!! If Wilson can learn to play man coverage half as well as Revis can this season, we’ve got one hell of a cast at cornerback.

ya gotta believe good things are coming for the jets this year. but the haters make one good point. you’re only the best defense by winning games. stats are nice but you have to shut people down late in games to be great. i think the jets are gonna be great, soon. it’ll be nice to shut up the naysayers

If there were any questions about that D, there are none now.
But I think the Jets O took a step back this offseason. Shoulda kept Jones. And Faneca. Sanchez will have a sophmore slump….. as if his freshman pro year was really all that anyway.

  7. BroncosfanBR says: May 15, 2010 1:02 PM

I think if Alphonso Smith shows improvement this year, the Broncos could arguably have one of the best secondaries in the NFL.

This is how you get burned by Ted Ginn Jr.
Dont worry when a good reciever comes to town you get constant help over the top.
Alright now go get your own island

The comment about making Cromartie moot as a starter is stupid.
    The games about depth fool.
If Wilson stars it just means they can shut down both the wides and the slot completely.
If you watch this division you know he was brought in by Ryan to play man to man on Welker twice a year.
    Perfect plan.
    Cormartie, Reevis, and Wilson.
    PERFECT TOGTHER !!
    LMAO

Cromartie is the softest CB in the league. Of all teams/fans it is the Jets that should know this. Cromartie is a liabilty. Be careful what you wished for Jets fans.

@BKILBY13 – Brandon Marshall will not be a factor when you guys play the Jets this year with Darrelle Revis covering him. Jason Taylor is going to put Chad Henne on his ass 3 or 4 times this year, Calvin Pace will get at him for another couple. A few good men named Kris Jenkins, Bart Scott, and David Harris are going to shut down that interior run game of yours. Those ridiculous plays the Dolphins benefited from last season will not happen this year. You don’t have Ted Ginn Jr. playing return man anymore. The Jets are sweeping the Dolphins this season on their way to the 6-0 AFC East record.

    LOL @JMoney…
Everyone likes to talk like Ginn burned Revis for that TD. Watch the play again. Jets are in zone coverage and Revis wasn’t even defending him. Ginn slipped past and Revis damn near caught up to him at the end.
Get your facts straight and stop trying to relive Ginn’s only good football moment as if Revis blew the coverage.

Ginn’s TD was on that dog Rhodes. Ginn was so wonderful he’s off the team. Here was a 5th round guy drafted in the 1st round who’s now off the team. The Dolphins, complete with Dan Marino for 17 years, haven’t done squat since the 70’s.
Yeah, Ginn’s the man. Just like Ronnie Brown. And Jason Allen. And Rodrique Wright.
    2010 Dolphins 5-11.

Revis is going to turn this kid into something amazing and Imagine now if Cromartie plays up to his potential. On youtube they have great highlights of Kyle Wilson. Hes a great punt returner too. No other team in the NFL is going to have a secondary like the JETS. And cause of it be ready for that REX RYAN BLITZ……

  28. bigdaddywaite says: May 15, 2010 3:55 PM

Anyone attempting to take anything away from Revis as a player is a moron, plain and simple.
There is not a team in the NFL that wouldn’t take him to play corner for them. With that, there isn’t a fan that would hope for the same.

  33. CKL says: May 15, 2010 6:21 PM

I DESPISE the Jets (I am a Pats fan)…but RR knows how to build & call a defense. The reason the Pats even won the last game between them had not very much to do with the Jets defense sucking it up…but rather the Jets’ O sucking it up.
Yeah Cro is soft as a baby’s ass but so is Asante Samuel and he was given some big dollars by the Eagles. If Cro can’t have an impact with RR’s defense, he should hang ‘em up.

  34. HellRelle24 says: May 15, 2010 6:48 PM

  36. Jonky says: May 15, 2010 8:08 PM

For you Jet haters that have to search for anything negative, thank you for reminding me that Cromarte is soft. He is soft against a power runner like Shonn Greene, but thats not what he’s going to be asked to do for the Jets. He is one of the best cover corners in the NFL. He’s going to be asked to cover opponants #2, since Revis has already and will continue to shut down ALL the best #1 WRs in the game. Then the Jets brought in Wilson to take out the slot guys. Keep one safety back to play centerfield and the Jets rush seven. Too bad Mo Lewis doesn’t still play or Brady would experience what Bledsoe did under the Jets seven man all out blitzes. Oh wait the Jets have Pace and Taylor to deliever the stick! The NFL’s #1 defense got a hell of a lot better!

  37. cobrakai says: May 15, 2010 8:24 PM

I hate them but the Jets D is gonna b sick, Cromarte will not be made moot, you jack a$$, he is a great cover corner with incredible ball skills. He is a crappy person but that shouldn’t prevent you from objectively evaluating his ability to play football.

  39. tropicalbamboo says: May 15, 2010 9:00 PM

You Jets fans are delusional if you can’t see Ted Ginn Jr., of all receivers, toasted Revis. Yes, the Dolphins dumped Ginn for a 5th round pick. That should make it even more embarrasing for you.
    Here’s the video:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MyPtJF-IgPc
Man coverage – Revis on Ginn – Ginn blows past Revis – Touchdown (open by four yards) – Revis sulks – Rex Ryan curses. Announcer (Gruden) then points out that, before the game, Revis said he had Ginn “all night”.
How is this play “Rhodes’ fault? Where is Revis “almost catching” Ginn?
Revis is a fine corner but there’s a dose of NY hype following him too – the dude has weaknesses. You’re not a “Shutdown Corner” if a novelty wide receiver is running past you on Monday Night Football.

  40. mrzazz41387 says: May 15, 2010 9:07 PM

    @Bill s
The Bills don’t play in buffalo, Miami doesn’t play in Miami, Dallas doesn’t play in Dallas, Atlanta doesn’t play in Atlanta. It’s the New York City Jets/Giants, not NY State. A suburb of the city is a suburb of the city, even in NJ.

  41. Marino13 says: May 15, 2010 9:24 PM

Jet fans are really such f-ing D-BAGS…..why cant they be more educated like the other nuch better NY team. Such A-holes, the jets have to ghad the most OVERARATED defense in the entire NFL. Jets fans have a short memory remember what Payton did rite before half time in that playoff game – needed to make a stop and looked like stevie wonder out there – ridiculous. BTW the dolphins have themselves quite a pair of very young corners as well but no jet fan would pay them some respect. Even Randy Moss said they are gonna be great….Davis and Smith Im sure will be in the same class as the overrated Revis very soon.

  42. mrzazz41387 says: May 15, 2010 9:31 PM

Go to 40 seconds into the video, Revis was going to release him right there. That is when he saw Rhodes out of position, but it is too late for Revis to catch Ginn at that point.

Jet Fans = Typical immature NFL fans who talk shit after they finally, and because of the disgraceful Colts I might add, achieve limited success. I have NEVER seen a Rex Ryan Defense stop a top 10 passing offense…and I watched him for almost a decade. Yes, they put up good stats, but when they needed to, Rothlessberger, Manning, Brady, etc had him for dinner. Overrated, glad he’s outta B-more, have fun NY. PS-How’d you like Bart Scott’s disappearing act in the champ game? Get use to it.

Mrzazz41387. Good point, however Atlanta does play in downtown Atlanta. My main point is NJ out did NY for a good stadium to play in, NY really let there teams go across the river. Bill p.s. I doubt the guys who live in Jersey call them selves New Yorkers. And what state do the Jets have there training facility in?And yes the Dolphins don’t play in Miami, however they still play in Florida, same as Dallas, they still play in Texas.

  47. mrzazz41387 says: May 16, 2010 12:19 AM

I thought the Falcons play in Flowery Branch, GA. Well north Jersey is full of New Yorkers. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, but I live in jersey now. NJ is where New Yorkers go to get away from the city, but be close enough to go in and out with relative ease, and quickness. The only other team I can use as an example is the Kansas City Chiefs. They play in Missouri. It’s all about proximity, and the Meadowlands are in a part of Jersey that is pretty much the 6th boro

  48. GRpatriot says: May 16, 2010 10:02 AM

Revis is a really good CB. He’s a stud. He modeled his game after Ty Law. Thier both from the same hometown. Similar is sature but, Revis is faster.
Cromartie isn’t all that. He’s damn good at making kids and not paying support!
Wilson has the potential to be great. The dude shows up at the Senior Bowl with an RV with his picture plastered all over it. You have to like that cockyness in a CB. I wonder when Rex gets his RV…? He gets the rubberband, then challenges his team to a weight contest. Isn’t that cheating? Over time that rubber band will stretch, so I predict Jenkins wins the contest. Rex hasn’t the self discipline to keep his mouth shut! I hope that thing doesn’t let go during a game, oh the humanity…Worst disaster since the Hindenburgh!

  49. ampats says: May 16, 2010 11:53 AM

    Mr Mazz,
The above post has exposed your lack of knowledge of the NFL. Pull out the standings and look at all the teams and their cities and you will find most do play in that city.
I reaally don’t have the time or patience to go thru 32 teams but ie
    Seattle plays in Seattle
    Atlanta plays in downtown Atlanta
    St. Louis plays in St.L
    KC plays in KC
    TB plays in Tampa
Baltimore plays in Baltimore etc etc
    Yes Wash plays in MD
    Jets/Giants play in NJ
Yes, Northern NJ is considered a NY suburb and Southern NJ is a Philly suburb., but anyone who lives in NY does not truly consider NJ, New York.
Just ask Archie Bunker ha ha
Your team got its start playing next to LGA hence the name Jets.
I know I post alot of comments about the Je(s)ts but we will see if you guys can put it together this year.
My sister lives in LI next door to one of your stars who knows my posts which we laugh about when I visit. He knows I like to tweak you guys
I thought in 2008 was the year you were going to break the now 41 years. This is your one year window because I think there are too many contracts up for renewal and renogotiation after this season.
You guys talk the talk, lets see what you do.

  50. Jonky says: May 16, 2010 12:17 PM

ampats would be nice when you’re correcting someone to be correct yourself.
Atlanta does not play in downtown Atlanta, but in Floral Park a suburb close to the Hartsfield Airport, not even close to downtown.
Kansas City plays somewhere in between KC, Missouri and KC, Kansas. They don’t play in either.
You don’t have the time or patience because your entire rant would be flushed and you know it.
Should the Skins, Jets and Giants claim an entire region like the CHEATRIOTS?

  51. ampats says: May 16, 2010 1:14 PM

    Jonky,
Practice what you preach, the Falcons play in the dome which is in Atlanta, next to the CNN building. I have been there at the Dome.
Foxboro,MA is 20-25 minutes from Providence, RI and 35-40 minutes from Boston, MA.
No need to no longer call themselves the Boston Patriots unlike the team you cheer for that doesn’t play or practice in New York.
How about the Newark Jests since you play 10 minutes from Newark Airport?
    Look it up Einstein !

  52. NYJALLFINGDAY says: May 16, 2010 1:53 PM

Lol, thank you for the 5 seconds of not being an asshole, ampats. But anyway, as far as Revis and Wilson goes, the passing game of the opposing team isn’t looking too good. Getting Cro and Wilson was a RESULT of the AFCCG. Peyton just kept going towards Lito Sheppard, because he’s NO match for the awesome receivers Indy has. Mark our words, if we had someone other than Lito Sheppard, that game would have probably been ours. Moving on, the Jets and the Giants don’t play in NYC because of how much money it would cost and the incredible amounts of traffic it would cause, and nobody wants to play in Long Island, and that’s coming from a Long Islander. You guys should see the fight that we’re giving Charles Wang over his new Islanders stadium, and upstate is just plain boring, northern hicks for the most part.

  53. ericthred says: May 16, 2010 4:42 PM
