Chris Johnson is a more physical runner that is generally known. Mainstream media focus on the long runs with the smooth moves. But, he is actually pretty tough inside the tackles considering he has a smallish frame.

maybe he didnt give up a lot of sacks. but johnson is an end runner. mawae DID NOT open up a lot of holes for him.
agree, that troy and trace arent going to get contracts/ armstrong hasnt played in years. amd most 39 year old CBs should have given it up 4 years ago.
never been to pff, but it would be interesting to see what they think about mawae’s play as the season progressed. old farts play worse late in the year. i tend to bet against old teams late in the year.

If we could "see" everything else PFF applied by charting each game, Seattle's pass-block rating would probably make more sense. --- Including, gulp, pocket time, measured by actually watching & breaking down film, i.e., what PFF does. Ex. Is an OL that gives its QB more than the league-average in pocket time -- which still results in pressures/hits/sacks because the QB is indecisive, immobile, a slow reader (progression-wise) with a longish wind-up or weak arm or more concerned with his QBR than avoiding sacks (throwing the ball away) -- "worse" than the OL that averages less pocket time for a QB with better escapability, superior field vision (faster checkoffs, progression reads), a bigger arm or a quicker release who also & routinely changes protection calls at the LOS when he detects blitz, certain coverages and dumps off/throwsaway balls to avoid sacks?

“Whilst this is currently only a demonstration site using data from the 2007 season it still contains a minimum of eight regular season games per team and every Post Season game. Our Player Participation data is a recent addition to the site and although it isn’t available for all games if you look at 2007 Week 1 you should get a pretty good idea of the data you’ll be getting for every game in 2008.”

So what’s the problem out of curiousity? The conclusion of this article would be that either a) Chris Johnson got cleaner wholes and didn’t have to break as many tackles, which makes sense because he isn’t a tackle breaker, or b) He was beating players more with his shiftiness and speed rather then breaking tackles.
How is this a waste of time? The way I see it, this is statisics supporting game film.

When Vince Young started taking snaps from him at the Pro Bowl he should have realized how big of a joke it is. He can’t use his 09 Pro Bowl season as leverage.
He is just a well known name, most fans can’t name a teams starting five O-lineman.

The argument that one bad blocker means a running back can’t put up huge numbers in the most stupid concept I have ever heard. It’s the fallacy of composition. Just because one player is bad doesn’t make the unit as a whole bad. If Johnson was good enough he could avoid every tackler Mawae failed to block efficiently. Obviously he doesn’t because he does sometimes make a decent block but its still possible.

On the Titan’s line…Mawae had the fewest QB pressures,QB hits,and penalties and only Amano gave up fewer sacks 0 to Stewart &Mawae”s 1 apiece In the league…Mawae was 1 of only 3 centers to give up 0 QB hits, not too shabby!…I’d go with ESPN’s(media perceptionist )Mark Schlereth on this one…

You guys should read their standards and how they calculate the conclusions they find. They aren’t simply going be yards and tds. They literally look at the play multiple times to pick up the more subtle things that fans are less likely to notice (or really care about).
Sure Chris Johnson had the most yards in the season, but how did he do on blitz pick ups? How many penalties were called on him? How many missed assignments did he have? They try to put all these things together to see who had the best season. By their calculations, Chris Johnson didn’t have a OVERALL season as good as Ray Rice, MJD, or Jamal Charles.
If you disagree, feel free to review every play of the season by these players to prove you reached a different conclusion. It’s ok to think they’re wrong and stupid. You have to have evidence instead of simple insults.

Brian Leonard, Chris Brown, Larry Johnson, Marshawn Lynch, Jason Snelling, Mewelde Moore, Michael Bush, Tim Hightower and Clinton Portis. Leonard’s #’s came on 27 carries. 5 broken tackles. Awesome. He’s 1st rd in my draft baby! I expect all these guys to be gone by the third right? Really good backs…

I think the whole PFF operation is based in the UK and, as I recall, they’re not true ‘football men’ who have learned over the years how to scrutinize technique. X’s and O’s are one thing, a lot of that can be ascertained through the internet or, heck, even Madden. But knee bends, drive steps, hand placement…. How do you learn to precisely critique such things if you’re not out on the practice field in some capacity or taken under the wing of a scout?
Either way, they also don’t have access to the ‘all-22 film’ so I don’t know how they can even ATTEMPT to precisely quantify DBs, WRs or anything else off-camera when they don’t even know the coverages, combo routes etc etc.
But they are statisticians so they have been able to make it pretty and create some buzz for themselves.
Why so many take this rudimentary nonsense as gospel, I’ll never know…

I think you are full of crapola on this one, Evan. Nice plug for your dumb-a$$ little website though – should generate a lot of traffic from PFT fans wondering how you could be so stupid
a) One weak link on an offensive line would not effect Johnson that significantly in the interior of the line, where double teams are very common.
b) check out the rest of the grades for the 0-line, all of them are very highly rated, which would compensate for Mawae’s poor play.
c) have you seen much of Chris Johnson hitting it straight up the gut? Nah…..me neither. He’s a perimeter runner, where he conveniently has two lineman who rank in the 25 percentile in run blocking amongst starting tackles.
Surprisingly….it all makes a great deal of sense.

PFF is a complete joke. All you have to do is browse through the position rankings for 2 minutes to see how stupid it is. You might as well use BleacherReport.com as a reference.
Yeah….why is that? Because all the big stars that you love are not at the top of the list? Suprisingly when you grade players on a play by play basis like profootballfocus does, you realize that all the big names who provide the “wow” effect are not always necessarily the best and most consistent players. Who would have thunk it.

– Johnson also set the single month record for rushing, with 800 yards in November 2009, which broke the previous record set by Ricky Williams who ran for 797 yards in November 2002.
– Also in the 2009 season, Johnson had 3 touchdown runs of 85+ yards. No other player has achieved that many in a career.
