Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder has already invested tens of millions of dollars in defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, and he sounds like he’s starting to question whether he made a wise investment.
Snyder told reporters Saturday afternoon that he’s unhappy that Haynesworth is choosing to sit out voluntary offseason workouts.
“I’m disappointed he’s not here. Absolutely,” Snyder said, per the Washington Post. “We’re expecting our players to lead by example, and we’re expecting our players to understand that they’re Redskins and they need to be here.”
Snyder can expect whatever he wants, but if he wanted Haynesworth to show up to offseason workouts, he should have structured Haynesworth’s contract in a way that would make it worth his while to show up to offseason workouts. Haynesworth has already cashed in, and now he feels free to spend his offseason however he wants.
But while Snyder isn’t happy with his biggest 2009 acquisition, he sounds thrilled with his biggest 2010 acquisition, quarterback Donovan McNabb.
“Donovan, you talk about on the field -- it’s off-the-field with me,” Snyder said. “It’s his leadership ability that stands out with me.”
Leadership that, in Snyder’s view, is sorely lacking with Haynesworth.
