Roy Williams on Romo: "We're connecting like Montana and Rice"

R. Williams.jpgIn a segment last week on NFL Network, a pair of analysts chastised Roy Williams for his incessant honking, saying you can’t talk your way into the being The Man in the NFL.

They are going to love this post.

Williams was asked on ESPN 1300 in Austin if he was worried that Tony Romo seems to have better chemistry with Miles Austin:

“Last year around this time we were throwing and catching and it wasn’t very good. Just to be quite honest with you, we were missing balls, and bad throws and drops and all that in the offseason that carried over to the season,” Williams said.

“But this year, we’re connecting like Montana and Rice. It’s night and day from last year so I know we’re expecting big things for both of us.”

For once, we’re speechless.  Commenteriat, take it away.

Those two douchebags ought to be slapped for even thinking they are in the same league as Montana and Rice.

Am I the only one that thinks Roy Williams statements about “keeping his job” and “bonding with Romo” are getting more pathetic with each passing week????

  8. JaggedMark says: May 17, 2010 5:23 PM

The only Montana/Rice comparison I can make for Romo and Williams is that both QB’s were white, and both receivers black.
    End of comparison.

Here’s a question: did you guys put in a lot of time and effort over the offseason to build up good chemistry, or did you just dick around and are just assuming things will be better? Williams, you’re worthless. You have good talent, but suck. That is so unforgivable.

  25. Green n' Gold says: May 17, 2010 5:31 PM

  32. Gabe Northern says: May 17, 2010 5:36 PM

Like the “bad throws” reference, especially because it was strategically placed before “drops.”
Troubles in pick-up football toss environs tend to portend trouble for when you’re actually in gear facing opponents…so what the hell took Mastermind Jason Garrett so long to get Miles Austin some looks?

  33. hotep999 says: May 17, 2010 5:37 PM

    2 problems w/this statement.
    #1. Romo is not Montana
    #2. Williams is not Rice

  34. youngtorice says: May 17, 2010 5:37 PM

  35. The Wishbone says: May 17, 2010 5:37 PM

What is there to be “speechless” about? If you’re gonna compare yourself to someone, that’s the most obvious comparison to make. He didn’t say “Montana and Rice in those Super Bowls they won.”
Maybe he meant like in that game where the Giants destroyed Montana’s back.

Awwwww how nice. You gave them 5 more wins then they should have.
Does anyone remember last year Dallas ran the hell out of the ball? Now take that, and subtract a LT. There is no way they are going to be the same team because they don’t have a solid LT on their roster. Romo is going to have to make sure he runs fast this year. Williams isn’t going to get much thrown at him when Romo is lying on his back.

  74. BarryStill#1RB says: May 17, 2010 7:03 PM

just dont say I told you so when florio reports the cowboys buy out williams contract next year, and he resigns with the lions, and developes into a reliable number 2 with burleson working the slot and rotating with roy and calvin, and the Lions end up pulling off the biggest steal in a trade ever.

I wish him, Dez, and Miles all the best of luck, and may the best men start… could just be another “Fun Bunch”! As for Dallas going 9-7, that’s just plain Cowboy hating wishful thinking… 11-5 at WORST, division champs again for sure, and a possible 14-2 run.
The playoffs, and winning more than 2, is another story…

Oh yes because you must be a f’ing football genius. Of course a teammate would never try to throw their support behind another for encouragement. Williams is a bust plain and simple. Oh and now you have the 2nd coming in bryant. He is so fantastic against cb’s that won’t even make the team anyway. I will still bet bryant beats williams out though. On the SF note, I’ll take Vernon Davis and Michael crabtree over Austin and Witten anyway. I would most certainly take Morgan over williams.

Oh and I promise you they’re making the team….and they have a good chance to both make the Pro Bowl again this upcoming season…two quality corners at least that were getting beat by Dez!!! As for Roy…he wouldn’t even put up similar #’s to Rice even if he was as talented because of the amount of weapons we have!!! He appears to be in shape and motivate and that, my friend, is trouble for the rest of the league!!!! And despite what Florio would want you to belive the kid is actually quite bright and respectable. Actually go on and watch some video of his interviews, he is a stand up kid. Tim Tebow is a stand up kid and everyone thinks he is the next Jesus. There is nothing wrong with being optimistic about a young, talented WR. Roy Williams sucks and I am pretty sure your opinions and general outlook on Football sucks too.

    Hannah Montana and Jerry Rice.
    More like Condoleezza Rice.

That’s a little insulting to Condoleezza, don’t you think?

Roy’s gotta have a sore neck from looking over his shoulder. Let’s drop the comparisons and try to make a name for yourself. Romo should stay out of it.

    @chapnasty.
The only thing you are right about is Roy Williams sucks. Who exactly is “everyone” that thinks Tebow is the shiz??? Certainly not this guy so don’t put words in my mouth little lady. How many other people had “all the tools” to be a good NFL player and sucked royally? All I’m saying Miss is let the guy play before you go touting his greatness. He very well may turn out to be a great player…….or he could suck tremendously. There were obviously 20 odd teams who feel about like I do; and one blowhard spouting how he’s going to be the greatest thing EVER!! I stand by my post and you clearly have a chip on your shoulder and know even less than my 5 year old niece about the game of football.

Montana and Rice..this guy is delusional…Rice was never going to be benched in favor of a rookie, which is gonna happen to Williams in Dallas next season!!!

  118. Dan Olson says: May 18, 2010 4:45 PM

I agree with Williams. He and Romo will be comparable to Montana and Rice…..provided it’s Rice throwing the ball to Montana.

  119. ericthred says: May 18, 2010 4:47 PM

Jerry Rice can come in off the streets and put up better #’s than Roy Williams today, even at his current age…Roy Williams is just like the Cowboys…not as good as advertised.

man the Cowboys so deserve the ridicule…

Hey Slapchappy…before you pontificate any longer about your vast football knowledge, lets take a walk in the past….shall we. Lets see what SI had to say about royboy
POSITIVES: Big, playmaking receiver that is a scoring threat every time he handles the ball. Quickly gets off the line and defeats jams by opponents, has a burst of speed and runs solid routes. Sharp into patterns, stays low on exit and immediately positions himself to make the reception. Shields defenders from the action with his large frame and protects the pass, quickly transitioning up the field after the reception. Extends his hands, offers the quarterback a nice target and comes down with the ball in a crowd. Tough to cover and easily separates from opponents. Picks up positive yardage running with the ball and is both elusive and strong. Makes the reception in stride running laterally, has excellent deep speed yet controls the game as a possession receiver in the underneath coverage. Also intelligent and knows where the chains are on third down. Effective blocker when focused on the task at hand.
Now lets see what they thought of your boy Dez:
Positives: Physically gifted pass catcher who takes over games or breaks them open. Quickly releases off the line into pass routes, comes back to the ball out of breaks and extends to make the reception away from his frame. Immediately transitions from making the reception to running after the catch, displays a burst of speed, and can stretch the field. Displays terrific eye/hand coordination, makes the difficult over-the- shoulder reception and battles hard to come away with the ball. Comes across the middle and uses his frame to shield away opponents. Easily makes the reception in stride and can turn it on and one quick step. Sells routes, uses his hands to get separation from defenders, and is a tough receiver who takes a pounding yet holds onto the throw.
Looks like you have two of the same crappy wideouts on your team. Good luck with THAT.
Now go get your shine box, and come back when you understand the game.

Fact of the matter is RW has done nothing in Dallas. Autin has worked harder and produced which is why he’s the #1 WR. I have a problem with that b/c he’s supposed to be a professional who’s current team gave up a lot to get him…and now is only motivated b/c of Dez? Romo needs to step up a little and tell RW to shut up and catch….period. Good news is Dez has been working real hard and hasn’t said too much other then he’s appreciating the opportunity to try help the team. With that said the rookie sounds like a pro and the pro sounds like a rookie. I think RW is desperate, immature with minimal margin for error. Not good for RW.

    @ ignroingthehaters and Flip
I think the one thing that Dez Bryant has that is going to make him a great football player is his combination of work ethic (at least since he has been in Dallas) and his character. A lot of people are judging this guy based off of his crack head whore of a mom. He speaks well and is handling this new fame very well. I am optimistic that the combination of skill and character will help him be elite. However, I could be wrong and can admit that, but I will be optimistic for now until proven otherwise.
    Shine my shoes beotch.

Did those two have more talent??

  126. flip_em_the_birds says: May 19, 2010 1:13 PM

    Hey slappy
How bout I shine your shoes with your tears when you realize the guy you drafted produces as little as the guy who claims to be Jerry Rice.
Stop stargazing and realize that his “work ethic” caused him to fall to the bottom of the round to begin with. He wasn’t even the first wr taken from his team.
He “speaks well”? Really? Please educate us on how that will translate to football success. Maybe the gang of misfits that you seemingly rule with your “football knowledge” are the ones that judge Bryant on his “crack head whore” of a mom, but the rest of us just realize that he hasn’t proven a thing yet. He had the exact same description coming out of college that Roy “Rice” Williams had. How’d that turn out?
So what’s next from you? Bryant just bought a Prius, so that means he’s going to the Pro Bowl?

I have been thinking a lot about if Dez Bryant will be a bust. I think he will be, but I don’t think it is his fault. Dez Bryant will probably have a solid career as a solid WR. I don’t see the next Jerry Rice, or Randy Moss in him, but I see a (hopefully a more silent) Chad Ochosinco. He will have his big years and his down years. But I think there is an unfair amount of hype around him. People are saying he is going to be this great player and if he ends up being pretty good, people will be disapointed. Its like Reggie Bush. Anyone with half an NFL brain could see he wasn’t going to be anything special in the NFL. But he is a great role player. He is still labeled a bust because he wasn’t the next great RB. Cowboy fans need to back off their expectations of him and just hope that he is a nice player to go along with an already solid core of WRs.

  128. vwood says: May 20, 2010 1:39 PM

It’s nice to have a positive attitude, specially when you know it doesn’t matter how bad you play your not going to get cut because your getting paid to much money. It’s pretty bad that a wideout who is better than you (patrick crayton) is getting run out of town because of your overpriced salary, and you have the nervous to mention you and jerry rice in the same statement. If Patrick would stay and fight for the job, you would be out of a job because you dam sure not going to beat out Dez, he’s a bigger and stronger version of Randy Moss just not as fast.

  129. irish4life says: May 20, 2010 3:14 PM

When he said Montana And Rice Maybe he was thinking if those 2 great players were to go out in the backyard and chuck the ball around to relive the old days.
