Vikings stadium issue likely on hold until 2011

Florio wrote recently that the Vikings stadium bill faced an uphill climb after recent developments.

On Monday, that climb basically gave up for the year. ESPN’s Kevin Seifert reports that the Minnesota state legislature will adjourn on Monday after a budget session that paid no more attention to the Vikings’ stadium proposal.

The only chance for the issue to get addressed this year would be for Governor Tim Pawlenty to call a special session with the purpose of voting on a stadium bill in the summer. That scenario is seen as very unlikely.

The issue has essentially been tabled until February of 2011 at the earliest, with little to no progress made this year. The Metrodome’s lease ends in February 2012.

Seifert provides a nice recap of the stadium issue as it stands. Nothing that has happened thus far will make Vikings fans feel particularly secure about the future of pro football in Minnesota.
