Redskins, UFL among Doug Williams’ options

A week after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced that director of pro personnel Doug Williams had stepped down, a new report says Williams is weighing offers from the Washington Redskins and the United Football League.

Thomas George of FanHouse reports that the Redskins and Williams are currently in talks about potentially creating a role for him in the front office. And UFL commissioner Michael Huyghue says he’s interested in hiring Williams, possibly as G.M. of a potential future franchise in Norfolk, Virginia.

Yes, it is true that we are interested in Doug,” Huyghue told George on Tuesday afternoon. “I think I was one of the first people in the NFL back in 1995 to hire Doug in Jacksonville [as a scout]. And I think he has been overlooked at times when NFL executive jobs have opened. He is a great example of a great player who after his playing career continued to embody talent, character and stayed current in football. Players feed off of him. If you can get Doug Williams, in any franchise, your franchise will be better. And if we have the opportunity to bring him in, that is an opportunity that we will make happen.”

Williams was the Buccaneers’ quarterback from 1978 to 1982. He then played in the USFL before signing with the Redskins in 1986 and becoming the MVP of Super Bowl XXII.

Prior to joining the Bucs’ front office in 2004, Williams was the head coach at his alma mater, Grambling, from 1998 to 2003.
