Steelers set to open OTAs without Roethlisberger

When the Pittsburgh Steelers open organized team activities today, Ben Roethlisberger won’t participate.

A week ago we noted that the league was awaiting a thorough evaluation of Roethlisberger as part of the mandatory treatment he needs to undergo before he’s allowed back on the field. That’s still the case, and so Byron Leftwich, Dennis Dixon and Charlie Batch will be the Steelers’ quarterbacks at today’s OTAs.

Leftwich was working with the first-string offense at the Steelers’ most recent minicamp, but Dixon and Batch will also get a chance to compete for the starting job while Roethlisberger serves his suspension at the start of the season.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell hasn’t said when he will allow Roethlisberger to start working with the team again, but Roethlisberger is expected to be cleared in time for training camp and the preseason, when the Steelers’ offense will have a difficult balancing act of preparing for a season in which their starting quarterback will be absent for the first month.

I pray to God that Dennis Dixon comes in and wins the job, leads the team to 4-0 and Rapistfatburger loses his job.

If the Steelers get off to a good start this season, and if Dixon or Leftwich is playing well, one has to wonder what the reaction of the Steeler players will be when Ben is ready to come back. I think Big Ben is one bonehead decision away from being out in Pittsburgh…..

I’m tired of reading about this pig. Without a doubt he has a history of unzipping his pants, freeing Willy, and affronting women with the juvenile line “do what you’d like with it”.
Forget jail, one of these days that is going to get him beaten to within an inch of his life by an angry husband, boyfriend, or more likely, a father.
I don’t care WHAT this jackass can do on a football field.

Don’t worry haters. On 10/17/10, Ben will be back at starting QB and will lead the Steelers to a complete thrashing of the hapless Browns. Ben will very likely be out for blood and to prove himself that day. And before the end of the first quarter, the fans will be solidly behind Ben. Mark it down.
And whether it is Leftwich or Dixon, they should be able to do a capable job the first 4 games. But make no mistake, they will just be keeping the seat warm for Ben to return. As long as the defense is healthy (unlike last year) and they don’t forget the running game, they will be in fine shape after the first 4 games.
The Bengals and Browns fans are pissed that they don’t play the Steelers in the first 4 games. That would be their best chance of a victory. Last year is over, long over. One year does not a franchise tradition make (except if you like the Bengals or Browns I guess LOL!).
    GO STEELERS!

Here are some recent Ravens highlights:
    2009: lose to Pitts 23-20
beat Pitts 20-17 in OT with no Big Ben
    2008: lose to Indy 31-3
    lose to Pitts 23-20
    lose to Pitts 13-9
lose to Pitts in playoffs 23-14 (3 strikes and you’re out!!)
    2007: lose to BUFFALO, 19-14
    lose to Pitts 28-17
    lose to CLEVE 33-30 (lol)
    lose to Seattle, 27-7
Wow, your team has been pretty damn successful the last few years. What’s that saying about glass houses???? Maybe when the Ravens enjoy anywhere near the success the Steelers have in more than ONE SEASON, you can pump your chest out and talk shit.

Hey HoleinOne09-Give me some of that Kool-Aid your drinking!!! I wouldn’t bank “on a complete trashing of the hapless Browns”. If memory serves, it was Worthlessburger who was under center when the “hapless Browns” kicked some Squeeler A$$ last season 13-6 and pretty much elimated them from the playoffs.
If Worthlessburger keeps his hands off the Furburgers and otherwise behaves he MAY be back for game 5 verses the Brownies. If Worthlessburger plays he will be quite rusty….having yet to have any significant practice time with his team. Add to that your best young receiver “Santurdio” Holmes now a jet and you have to rely and Grandpa Randel El, and Hines Ward to catch the ball.
The Browns with Vickers, Harrison, Hillis and company will run the ball down your throats. Delhomme will have something to prove as well too in that he is not finished in the NFL. He is an upgrade over Quinn/Anderson.
I would laugh very hard if the Brownies turned the tables on the Steelers and embarrased them in their home stadium. NEVER SAY NEVER!!! Who would have thought the Browns would beat the Steelers last year when the Squeelers had everything to play for and browns were just playing for pride!!! GO BROWNS!!!!

    ******************************************
I could definitely be wrong (if so, please correct me), but Dixon has only had two major injuries: (1) a concussion in 2005, (2) the ACL injury in 2007. I’m not minimizing the long-term consequences associated with concussions or the difficulties tied to rebounding from a torn ACL, but I wouldn’t exactly call Dixon “injury-plagued” based on this, would you? I think there’s a pretty common perception that Dixon is injury-prone, but I can’t say, based on the injuries I know of, that I buy into this argument.

  33. Holeinone09 says: May 18, 2010 11:35 AM

To rolli1967, I love the divisonal games! Nothing better thand Steelers versus Ravens/Bengals/Browns.
You have to admit, years ago, the rivalry between the Steelers and Browns was really good, one of the best in the league, the turnpike rivalry. That was before Modell packed the bags and skipped town. Since then the new Browns really have not been that good, and most time the Steelers stomped them. You can’t win every game as last year proved. But last year is over.
No need to make up stupid names for players like you did, it wins you no “brownie” points LOL.
I also wouldn’t spend much time criticizing Ben’s on-field play for the most part. After all, how did Brady Quinn do up there? And didn’t the Steelers basically retire Anderson after that game?
Make no mistake, that game 10/17 will be the game of the week because Ben will return if he stays out of trouble, which I fully expect he will. And I think he will be out to prove a point that game. Good luck to the Browns, who will need it that day!
    GO STEELERS!

Along with the injuries you named, he’s been hurt twice during his stint with the Steelers, ..both in the preseason. A broken wrist his rookie season, I believe and the second was last year during the Redskins game, …he left with a dislocated shoulder. It didnt make the headlines, …as he was third on the depth chart …make no mistakes …he is fragile. We could potentially see NFL history, …with all three QB’s being injured in one game. I hope not though. ….Here’s a reference from fanhouse:
“Dennis Dixon’s preseason is likely over after he suffered a dislocation of his throwing shoulder in Saturday’s loss to the Redskins.”

There have been three documented cases of Roethlisberger doing excatly that, unzipping his fly and laying out the pipe and telling women “do what you’d like”. One of them was even confirmed by a “friend of Ben’s”.
The guy is a first-class P-I-G, and morons like you put the blinders on his horrible behavior. He is an embrassment to every decent NFL player in the league, and has a serious behavioral issue that someday someone is finally going to solve for him if he doesn’t smarten up, which it looks like he’s incapable of doing.

Question to all Pitt fans. Based on your teams offseason, how confident do you feel in a successful upcoming season?
Our 09 record was 9-7, the same as both AFC wildcards. Of our seven defeats, only one was by 7 points–the rest were by less than a touchdown. My four biggest concerns were:
    1. Play-calling. Arians would have lost his job if he weren’t willing to adjustment. Losing Ben for four games will force him to focus more on the running game. Expect to see more balanced play-calling. If he weren’t capable of doing better, we wouldn’t have won SBXLIII.
    2. Special teams. We brought back Anthony Madison, our most aggressive special-teams player, and have made additional moves to strengthen our special teams.
    3. Secondary. Polamalu’s return will cover a multitude of sins and allow LeBeau to be more aggressive in the pass rush. I wanted to acquire a veteran corner through free agency. Not only did we get a vet corner–we got Bryant McFadden. He’s a former Steeler from our SBXLIII squad, an aggressive player who knows our system. We signed him for half the value of his contract.
    4. O-line. Firing Zierlein as o-line coach and bringing in Sean Kugler is my favorite move of the off-season. Coaching has been the biggest problem since Russ Grimm went to AZ. Clearly Zierlein lacked attention to detail, which is Kugler’s forte. Bringing in Pouncey, our first-round pick out of Florida, to start at guard and eventually replace Hartwig at center was a great move. I expect a much-improved o-line.
    New challenges:
    1. Depleted receiving corps since Holmes was traded. For some bizarre reason, everyone keeps saying we have only Randle El and Ward. Everyone has forgotten Mike Wallace, whose numbers last year rivaled Percy Harvin’s.
    2. Suspension of Roethlisberger. Yesterday Rosenthal wrote that having four QBs to prep was a “good problem” for Josh McDaniels. But PFT keeps writing that it’s a nightmare for Tomlin. No it’s not. We know Roethlisberger is the guy come week 5. Until then, it’s not Batch. I think it’s Leftwich, who is an able backup familiar with our system.
Of our first four opponents, only Baltimore made the playoffs in 09. It’s a home game, and Dixon nearly beat them last year. Atlanta is also a home game. Tampa is away, but also our weakest opponent and Leftwich knows the offense. Tennessee concerns me most. I think we can compete in each game and may wind up 2-2.
Since the scores in our losses were so close last year, we don’t need a major overhaul to do better–only minor tweaking. I expect we’ll go anywhere from 8-8 to 10-6. Given where we’ve started, anything less would surprise. Given the drama of this off season and the age of some of our players, anything more would surprise.

    ——————–
It doesn’t matter how they would’ve handled it if it was a third string qb. Ben is the starting qb until someone takes the job away from him. So hypocrisy is your platform now? Sorry, that’s just reality. It sucks, I know. You’re desire for a cleaner, law-abiding NFL was shot down by those dastardly Rooneys.

  51. Deb says: May 18, 2010 3:32 PM

    @Richm2256 …
Case closed on assault, but yes, Ben’s piggish behavior is well-documented. It’s also VERY WELL-DOCUMENTED that the women in the situations you describe WILLINGLY continued to keep Ben’s company AFTER he behaved that way. So please stop portraying them as innocent victims. If you really are the father of a decent young woman, you’re doing her a terrible disservice to lump her in with these women.
I tend toward cynicism when it comes to people being able to change their stripes. But it can be done. We can only wait and see. Like it or not, Ben behaving like an ass on his own time, when no criminal behavior was involved, is not cause for him to lose his job. NFL teams have given second chances to many many players who have engaged in criminal behavior, so it would be hypocritical not to give a second chance to someone for acting like a pig without committing a crime.
The real question is why this is such an obsession for you. Some of these people have the mentality of two-year-olds and they’re going to ignore the evidence and whine about Ben until the day they die. But I think you’re a wee bit smarter than the average dipstick. As I told someone the other day, I’ve slammed myself for wasting energy defending someone who, from a character standpoint, isn’t worth it. For me, it’s the core belief that the Court of Public Opinion is a dangerous thing that cannot be left unchecked. No matter how unlikeable people are, they shouldn’t be railroaded.
But as a New England fan, you have no reason for the irrational hatred of the Steelers that you’ve displayed on thread after thread long before the Roethlisberger story broke. Enough already. Yeah, the guy is a pig, but the evidence shows he didn’t rape anyone. Let’s pray he cleans up his act and becomes a productive member of society. Meanwhile, your team is the team of the 2000s, and nothing will change that. Idiots will carry on about Spygate, but anyone who knows anything about football knows the Pats, like the Steelers, earned their place in history. Let it go.

    @Deb …. I’m glad you asked! :)
While no one knows what will happen on any given Sunday ….and given the offseason moves the Steelers have made ….even if it weren’t successful …I wouldnt be mad…as I think they’ve made all the right moves. (Except bring in T.O. – just kidding) :)
With that being said, …I think the upcoming season will be succesful.
    1. The play calling was okay …but I’d like the see the RB flare out more on pass plays, instead of running up the middle and turning. Maybe run more when we have leads …only to salt the clock …as passing the ball is based on rhythm.
    2. I want Stefan Logan GONE! He did okay on returns ….but on coverage, He got threw around like a rag doll and can be seen trailing the ball on my returns by the opponent!
    3. The secondary will be fine as long as Polamalu is healthy.
    4. The O-line will be okay with the new additions and another year under their belt, ..working together.
    Of your new challenges:
I think the receivers will be fine …with the new additions …(if Not get T.O – kidding again :)
As far as the Defense, …the coaching staff knows all the adjustments to make when our key guys go down …it took a few games last year to adjust …and the addition of Allen will make up for some of the bad plays made by Tyrone Carter, should Polamalu go down, again.
FYI – I wouldn’t worry about the Titans …especially if Chris Johnson continues his holdout! Just my observation.

Bne is 2-0 in Super Bowls, what other active QB can say that? We know he will miss 4-6 games and not being charged in anything so Dixon and Leftwich can get in synch with the WR, center snaps and rb handoffs. Both qb’s will play the 1st 4 weeks, steelers go 3-1 or 4-0, ben comes back as the starting qb leads steelers toa 11-5 record and another supr bowl! Get use to it people!

Bdrunk: I don’t know a whole lot of team owners who aren’t in it for the money. They walk a fine line between responsible philanthropists and selling their souls to the devil for a lot of bucks. There are teams all over the league who are not only putting up with players’ crap, but are actively persuing and signing damaged goods, in hopes that the signings make their team more competitive, which in turns sells seats and T-shirts.
“Badthings”, the poster you defended here, cannot claim to be a “law abiding, NFL loving citizen that doesn’t want friggin rapists playing in the NFL, let alone walking the streets” after he spent the last several weeks trying to be the best dang troll he can be.
    ———————————
Your first statement is absoluetly true, but your previous post sounded like Rooney was above reproach and shouldn’t be questioned with regards to his actions. NO owner is above questioning questionable acts.
As for Badthings, being an “internet troll” isn’t illegal. Raping women in bathrooms with bodyguards keeping watch is however. And if hating the Stealers is being a troll, well count me in.

The hypocrisy are the Steeler fans that claim the Steelers and Rooney are so classy. Instead of cutting the loser for his off the field acts, they try to trade him and NO other team was willing to bring the dirtbag onto their rosters. So since they can’t get anything for him the Rooneys just keep him and pretend everything is fine

Well good luck with that pipe dream there dickhead! You don’t stand a chance and you know it! We kicked your asses in our house and that shit stadium of yours with no problems. There won’t be any problems this year either. Good luck trying to get to 9-7 again this year pal. I doubt you’ll make it! Even when your rapist comes back you still got nothing. The highlight of your season will be trying to stay ahead of Cleveland! Like I said, you guys are truly pathetic! Just remember, NO MEANS NO! LMFAO!!!!!!!!

Hanover Fist, I agree 100% with you that raping women is illegal. Interesting you should bring up that type of thing. You must have something in mind. By chance can you please provide a link to some actual facts that indicate any member of the current Steeler team in fact was either charged or proven guilty of raping anyone in a bathroom or anywhere else? Thanks, troll (and self-proclaimed hater).

    @Tony Snow …
I wasn’t asking … was just answering guitarkevin. But thanks for your insights :) I don’t think the Steelers were happy with Logan either, so expect a change on returns. Passing for four consecutive downs in the Bengals game when we only needed to make a first down was probably the worst play-calling I’ve ever seen. We need more balance in the play-calling, but I’m sure that message has been conveyed to Arians or he wouldn’t still have his job. He’s going to have to do better at incorporating the running game, and I have confidence in our backs. Glad you’re kidding about T.O. We have enough locker-room issues this year LOL
I still have concerns on defense since Troy’s recovery is progressing so slowly. But if he and Aaron Smith can stay healthy, it will be a different game on that side of the ball. You may be right about Tennessee. Have you seen Peter King’s ranking of teams? Obviously he doesn’t expect much from the Titans or the Bengals. He expects Baltimore to be among the elite teams this year. I’m not a fan of King and think most of his rankings are a crock. But I hope he’s right about the Titans.

FACTS? *in my best Mexican bandito voice* We don’t need no stinking facts. Ben Shitlessburger has been charged, tried and convicted in the court of public opinion. Don’t you know by now that’s how things are done. It’s all tabloid justice or haven’t you gotten your copy of the National Examiner yet? Come on man, get with the program. lmfao

I feel that the Rooney’s have a better track record at running a football team than most PFT posters. Any fan of any team that thinks their personal feelings (or feigned moral stance) on any issue relating to the team should have a bearing on said teams personnel decisions is sporting a huge sense of self entitlement. Question it all you want, but don’t pretend to be outraged when the owner makes a decision in the best interests of the share holders.

Ben won’t be back till MAYBE 1/2 the season is over because either Dixon or Leftwich is going to get the job done. It’s too bad that Ben is still a Steeler. He should be sent to the CFL. No money in that! LMAO FAT UGLY LOSER!
