JaMarcus won't play Arena or Canadian football

We don’t know where JaMarcus Russell will play football in 2010, but he will apparently only consider offers from teams that play on 100-yard fields.

Jason La Canfora of NFL Network reports that Russell doesn’t plan to play in the Arena Football League or Canadian Football League.

The mere fact that anyone is talking about Russell playing Arena football or Canadian football demonstrates just how far his stock has fallen since he was the first overall pick in the 2007 draft. Players with the talent to be the first pick in the draft don’t end up desperately seeking employment three years later unless they’ve fallen victim to a bad case of lethargy addiction.

However, Russell does have a good enough arm that it seems likely that some team will eventually offer him a contract. We just don’t know which team it will be.

And if it’s not an NFL team, we know the UFL is hiring quarterbacks.

Thanks be to Jesus, at least JaMarcus isn’t foolish enough to play for the Godless Canadians. There is still hope for him yet.

to me it really seems like this guy doesn’t care about football so why would he go to the UFL or CFL? he has already made what, 30million? pretty sure at this point he doesn’t need to pretend he’s a football player and instead can just sit around eating ribs and ho-hos for the rest of his life.

I see the Patriots signing him.. They always take all the ex-Raiders .. remember?
    Gabriel, Sands, L.Jordan, Warren, Burgess, A.Walter. etc.etc.
Jamarcus in New England is a perfect fit.
Just like when the Raiders took #1 overall pick from NE in Plunkett.. Karma = Russell to NE for and 2 Superbowls.

Jamarcus didn’t even play for the Raiders. What makes you think he would take a job anywhere else? He’s more then content sitting on his lazy ass and counting the millions he robbed from the Raiders.

  22. johnster says: May 19, 2010 3:29 PM

Russell may be lazy, have a horrible work ethic, and be more immature than a teenager, but if he invests his money, spends smartly, and doesn’t act like he’s still making $10 million+ a season, there’s no reason he should ever have to work again.

  28. DEMOLITION says: May 19, 2010 3:38 PM

You have got think that Al Davis sat down with him and offered to keep him on for a reduced contract value – anything to save face here. The fact that he said ‘gimme my 3M and i’m outta here’ speaks volumes. This guy thinks he’s too big for minimum salary. hence, he won’t play another game.

  38. 8man says: May 19, 2010 3:46 PM

The word bust asserts that he actually had talent. I’m not so sure he ever had enough to compete at the NFL level.
He sure as hell didn’t have the work ethic.
It’s not just a crime against the Raiders that he got paid the way he did, but a crime against professional sports in general.
Somewhere, Ryan Leaf is singing to himself, “I’m not the biggest…I’m not the biggest…biggest…bust….ever. I’m not the biggest……”

  39. bigstorm says: May 19, 2010 3:47 PM

Getting emails from Canadian friends who are laughing their asses off that this guy would even make a CFL team.
Apparently this “story” ran in the sports section (last page) of a paper up there.
Too funny. A league where athleticism and the ability to be mobile are emphasized. This guy couldn’t even play OL in the CFL as the blocking assignments routinely require a lot of pull and zone blocking and this guy has cement feet.
Way to go Al Davis….at least Ryan Leaf played longer.

  41. ZombiePatriot says: May 19, 2010 3:50 PM

It seems to me it is more of a proclamation to help him save face when neither league calls for his services. It is not so embaressing for him to not get offered an NFL job but he most likely knows the AFL and CFL don’t want him either so might as well go on the offensive.
Still, I have a hard time believing he could even play in the CFL. It is a league that requires mobility.

Russell will fade away and within a couple years be totally forgotten. Until he’s on Discovery Channel 10 or 15 years from now as the centerpiece of a show about a 900 pound person who is no longer able to walk or get out of their bed without a lift to do it.

i bet he woulda been or would be good if given 2 years to learn.
    the ol’ GreenBay/Philly philosophy.
you see teams like raiders, 49ers, San Diego, & soon St. Louis draft these QBs that are supposed to be the savior of the teams.. When these guys are the #1 pick its because that team SUCKS SO BAD…. the QB position isnt the only postion that is killing these teams.
if you ever get a top 4 pick its probably in your best interest to trade it and stock pile picks to help the rest of the holes you have. ESPECIALLY when the QB class is this terrible.
Dont get me wrong, you cant leave a player like peyton on the draft board, and even the class with his brother and Rivers in it, all good picks. But there were no question marks on those guys.
Bradford will get hit and break just like the previous 3 times he got tackled..

  57. edgy1957 says: May 19, 2010 4:55 PM

He’d be absolutely stupid to go to the Arena League. I know that many people believe that it was Warner’s route to the NFL but what it did was keep him playing and it was his NFL Europe exposure that did him the most good (Like Jake Delhomme). Arena League QBs get away with a lot of BS passes that they could never away with in the NFL and the money isn’t worth the risk.
While I like the CFL, it’s also a bad route because of two reasons: the money and the game. If he wants to get back to the NFL quickly, the CFL is not the way to go because the 12th man will kill you. When Vince Ferragamo went to Canada, he really stunk up the place because he couldn’t handle the 12th man and he threw a lot of picks. There’s no doubt that he would have the best arm in town but it wouldn’t help him get back soon if he doubles his interceptions (and I see that happening).
The UFL would actually be the best route. The money isn’t good BUT he could end up playing 4 to 8 games and might even get a chance to latch on to an NFL team during the season. PLUS, it would be NFL-style football, which the other two options don’t offer.
In all cases, he’d have to take a substantial risk and maybe even cost himself money by buying an insurance policy against injury.

I disagree. There’s a fundamental difference between winning the lottery and being paid to perform a job.
I’d like to think that if you were paid $39 million to do your job, you would do it to the best of your ability.

Way to go Al Davis….at least Ryan Leaf played longer
    1. Over 3 seasons w/ the Raiders, Russell played in 31 career games w/ 25 starts. Over 3 seasons w/ the Chargers, Ryan Leaf played in 21 games w/ 18 starts. He missed all of the 1999 season with a shoulder injury & was also suspended 4 games in 2000. In 2001, Leaf appeared in 4 games w/ 3 starts in Dallas, bringing his career total to 25 games w/ 21 starts.
So actually, Ryan Leaf did not play longer.
    2. If Al Davis didn’t draft Russell with the 1st pick, Jamarcus would have still been taken by another team and fallen no lower than 5th. While the same could be argued about the selection at Leaf w/ the 2nd pick in 1998 …
    3. Al Davis did not give up 2 1st rounders, a 2nd rounder, a reserve LB & a 3-time Pro-Bowler to move up ONE SPOT to draft Russell, who also surpassed Leaf in virtually every statistical category, including CAREER GAMES PLAYED.
Of course, the selection of Russell was a mistake and Al Davis deserves some of the blame for the way things turned out. But if you’re going to criticize someone, you should probably have a clue what the hell you’re talking about and check the examples you’re referencing. Just a suggestion.

This guy has no business picking up a football ever again. He didn’t take his job seriously and now he’s not being taken seriously. He’s the reason why there’s a possible strike happening next year. He ruined it for every future NFL athlete coming out of college. The Jamarcus Russell rule will be in effect come next year. Rookies should never be paid more than veterans. You gotta earn your stripes. That goes for any job. The respect factor in the locker room will be off the charts if you earn the millions instead of millions being handed out before you even step on the field.

  75. Steve says: May 19, 2010 6:53 PM

Insanity Mike, the karma was Randy Moss… The Raiders got that huge break decades ago, and the Pats got Randy Moss for nothing. That was the karma to the Raiders/Patriots.
Jibfest… Only a Raider hater would believe that Raiders fans are the only ones who can do this or that… You’re stereotyping an entire fan base on what one person wrote on a rumor website… Hey at least you’re better than him right? lol. And the Raiders won’t be good until Davis dies? They’ll be better this year… They’re an average team this year and should be around 8-8 with Campbell at QB… Not a great team or anything but an average NFL team and they need a little talent and a lot more experience to be better than that, but in the meantime they’re average… And Davis has done a GREAT job this offseason whether you want to admit it or not…. They’re not very far at all from that “good” team that you think is impossible until Davis dies, just another thing that has been said a million times and people who don’t know the NFL say ‘oh I heard this and thought it was clever so I’ll repeat it’
Just because a guy is an idiot and a Raiders fan doesn’t mean they are correlated… There are idiots of every fan base and if you don’t realize that, the likelihood is, you’re the idiot.
And finally, RaiderfanSteve, if you really think anyone respects “J-Rock” or that anyone wants to be like JaMarcus Russell you’re crazy. You think it’s really great to have that much money, and I’m sure you’re right, but whenever he goes ANYWHERE for the rest of his life, dinner, grocery store, anywhere, he’ll ALWAYS be the guy who was the biggest bust in NFL history, and everyone will point and laugh at the ridiculously stupid guy who had it all and threw it away (and of course is the ultimate loser) if you think that’s cool good for you, I, and everyone I’ve known in my life, don’t think that’s cool.
Shannahan’s rat teeth, GREAT post… absolutely GREAT post.

I have an idea. Let’s all join Florio and kick this kid while he’s down…. its the american way!!

If JaWalrus can’t get in gear for the NFL, why the hell would he for a lesser league?
    Dude is done.

Uncle Rico had a great arm too, could throw over those moutains. Doesn’t mean that an NFL team would sign him.

talent hell. desire hell. he doesnt have either. ’twas a waste of $.
other leagues shouldnt want his fat overrated a$$ either.
ryan leaf and all those other guys and more are BETTER QBs. gradkowski the game thrower, losman and charlie frye are better. chauncey pullpecker is russell + a little desire.
and what makes u guys think jacarcass (great name, whoever) can count?
he did act as if he won “the lotto” (thanks, jackass mel reynolds)
    and hell he’s already 275+#… 350 isnt a challenge…
lets try at least 400. recommend 500. challenge him at something he is interested in, fer cryin out loud.

Russell just doesn’t want to fail in those leagues. More work, less money, more shame. Why do it? If he had any pride or ambition he would not have been fired by the Raiders in the first place. When you’ve been canned by the convenience store that sells watery gasoline and expired yogurt, you might as well accept the fact that you aren’t employable.

The Arena League is the WORST possible place to try to learn how to QB for the NFL. A QB can get away with a bunch of bad passes that would be picked off in the NFL and defenses don’t even compare. What could he possibly learn about reading N-F-L defenses when he won’t be playing against NFL talent OR facing NFL schemes? Do you think that it’s just a coincidence that there have been more ex-NFL Europe QBs in the league than ex-AFL?
He’d be better off waiting for a UFL offer becaue he needs to get on the field.

–Same to you, Steve. Especially this part:
“They’re not very far at all from that “good” team that you think is impossible until Davis dies, just another thing that has been said a million times and people who don’t know the NFL say ‘oh I heard this and thought it was clever so I’ll repeat it’ ”
So true. Just like the classic ‘Oakland always cheats and plays dirty’ or ‘the Raiders have a bunch of thugs’ garbage that the average hater always resorts to.

  95. raedawn says: May 20, 2010 4:38 PM

JaMarcus Russell isn’t going to work; don’t you understand he’s fat, lazy and worthless–the biggest bust ever. At least Ryan Leaf attempted to act like a football player.
He’d never make it in the CFL, UFL or IFL. Those guys might not be NFL calibre, but they work hard and take their careers seriously. Come to think of it; JaMarcus probably couldn’t make the cut on a pee-wee league team, but he could sit on several little kids and smash them.

  96. Shanahan's Rat Teeth says: May 20, 2010 7:53 PM

raedawn: Did you ever even see Ryan Leaf play, or know anything about his career? If you took the time to, you know, RESEARCH things you have NO CLUE about once in a while, you could avoid being embarrassed after saying things like, “At least Ryan Leaf attempted to act like a football player.” Please see below:
Ryan Leaf, rookie year, 1998: Was fined for skipping mandatory rookie symposium. Confronted a heckler & had to be escorted off the field, which was caught on film. Caught on video throwing a tantrum, cursing at & threatening a reporter. Went 1-15 for 4 yards & lost 3 fumbles in a game.
    Season totals include 3-6 record as starter, 1,289 yards, 2 TD’s, 15 INT’s, 45.3 comp. pct, 39.0 passer rating.
1999: Placed on IR after shoulder injury in preseason. Faked hand injury to skip practice & golf. Screamed at G.M. Bobby Beathard and a coach; was fined & suspended by team. Played flag football w/ friends while suspended & supposedly rehabbing his injuries; incident was videotaped. Was sued by team to recoup portion of signing bonus for “activities detrimental to the team.”
2000: Benched after 2 games, w/ 295 passing yards, 1 TD & 5 INT’s. Got another chance to play in week 3 due to injury. Responded w/ 2 more INT’s and a wrist inury the following week. Came back in week 11 and led team to a 1-6 record down the stretch. Cut by San Diego after the season.
    Season totals include 1-8 record as starter, 11 TD’s, 18 INT’s, 50.0 comp. pct., and a 56.2 passer rating.
2001: Signed w/ Tampa Bay. Refused to have surgery on his injured wrist. Struggled through 4 preseason games, refused to play under a reduced salary and was cut before regular season opener. Weeks later, signed w/ Dallas but failed physical. After finally joining team, goes 0-4 in his games w/ Dallas, throwing for 494 yards, 1 TD & 3INT’s.
2002: After being cut by Dallas, Leaf signed 1-year deal with Seattle. Citing injuries, he quit the team just before training camp.

Ah nothing better than an uneducated bible thumping american.
We here in Canada do have “GOD”. But i guess we are all really godless in the fact that god probably doesnt exsist. And jesus was nothing more than a carpenter with delusions of grandeur. So unless he built your house he has never saved you. SUCK IT TREBEK

  103. Shanahan's Rat Teeth says: May 24, 2010 6:31 PM

    steely devil hab:
I was calling out shukey11 for getting their panties in a bunch over comments that anyone with basic reading & comprehension skills would have immediately recognized as a JOKE.
There was no reason for them to ridicule people’s belief in God or their faith. To me, the “uneducated” person was the one trying to sound intelligent while being critical of others, all because they failed to understand that the post they were responding to was AN OBVIOUS JOKE, most likely by someone who shares the same beliefs…oh, the irony!
Now, you come along with your “witty” remarks & put downs in an ill-advised attempt to sound educated & add political beliefs to the discussion. Let me break this down for you:
    1. If you’re going to try to insult someone, try to be original. How many times have you read and/ or used the whole’ kids on the ‘puter,’ ‘time to put on your PJ’s’ theme before? Trust me, it’s played out & NOT FUNNY
    2. Why the Republican references? What does that have to do with ANYTHING AT ALL?
    3. Nobody ever said Americans are never judgmental or humorless, nor was it ever said that Canadians are judgmental and humorless. I only referred to shukey11 as both, in response to their failure to recognize an OBVIOUS JOKE & their subsequent criticism of Americans, Christianity & faith.
Let’s recap: you failed to adress any of my key points, instead relying on assumptions & totally unrelated subjects to argue against something that was never said. Then you close with the most unoriginal & generic attempt at humor you could have possibly used. The funny thing is, when you compare someone to a child & the intended target ends up being smarter & more clever than the you, aka the “adult,” the joke not only fails, it further exposes how foolish you are.

  104. Shanahan's Rat Teeth says: May 25, 2010 12:54 PM

steely devil hab: I was calling out shukey11 for getting all butt hurt about some comments that were obviously a joke. The fool was trying to sound educated while discussing religion on a football site and putting down multiple groups of people, but he looked like a buffoon that lacks reading comprehension skills.
Now, you reply to me talking some political nonsense, along with the most played out, unfunny attempt at humor I’ve read since the last 1,000 times it’s been used.
Go back and read what I said to shuckey11. Did I ever once defend any nationality, reliogion, or political organization? Did I put down any Canadians besides shuckey11, or say I was a Republican?
Learn how to understand what you read before you try to get all witty and political on someone. When you say “let the adults speak,” and the person you are comparing to the child ends up being much smarter and more clever than you, your pathetic attempt at humor backfires even more. I hope the irony doesn’t escape you.
