Dolphins, Zach Thomas plan "joint announcement"

The Miami Dolphins issued a press release Thursday morning saying they will hold a “joint announcement” on Thursday afternoon with former Dolphins linebacker Zach Thomas.

Typically, this type of announcement means that Thomas will sign a one-day contract with the team so that he can retire as a Dolphin. We presume that’s what will happen today, and perhaps the Dolphins will also announce plans to formally honor Thomas in some way during the regular season.

Thomas was drafted by the Dolphins in 1996 and played in Miami through 2007. In 2008 he played for the Dallas Cowboys, and in 2009 he signed with the Chiefs but was released prior to the regular season.

  1. This is great news!! Finally the front office making a good decision from a PR standpoint.

  2. Nice. Zach deserves as much, as will JT. It’s good to see Parcells/Ireland trying to do something for the fanbase other than just the ins and outs of football operations.

  3. About time….I would love it if they also were to announce that he is hired as an assistant LB coach.

  4. It is about time. Must have felt the heat by multiple people. The Jason Taylor situation didn’t help too.

  5. With all the head shots Zach has taken, the “joint announcement” involves the Dolphin rep saying the words slowly with Thomas repeating them to the crowd.

  6. About time….I would love it if they also were to announce that he is hired as an assistant LB coach.

  7. Jesus is my savior would love this type of open generosity and thanks giving displayed by the Miami franchise.
Also the commitment showed by Zach Thomas.
but it seems that he only wants to make negative comments. which is not the way of the lord.

  8. Great news, because Zach Thomas is one of the most underrated, selfless, overachieving bad a$$es to play MLB in a 4-3 defense. If you disagree, go check his measurables (too short, too small, too slow) then check his production. Reality will slap you in the face.
Speaking of which, irishsamurai (wtf?) and Mr. Ethen can kindly help themselves to a heaping bowl of my genitals. Go back to your Jets blog and chat about the second consecutive OTA Lombardi trophy.

  9. Finally……………….He has always been a Dolphin. Yea Zach!!! The Tuna is human after all….

  10. Nope, they’re announcing their engagement. More than a 50% chance it ends in divorce.

  11. One of Jimmy Johnsons best finds…a 5th round steal!! Guy played his balls off every game, one of the most underrated LBs…take him over that overated LB in chicago.

Any day of the week. The only LB better than Zach during his playing days was Ray Lewis, and the stats aren’t too much different,

  13. GREAT news!! Zach is very deserving of this honour. He gave his heart and sole to this franchise for years……a true professional!! Very happy for him!! Bravo!!

  14. Too hard for me to like a Tx Tech Red Raider.
    friggin sand aggies…….
    Lubbock sucks. Period.
Try and remember to show up, concussion boy.

  15. Shouldn’t any Dolphins Joint announcements involve “Sticky Icky” Ricky Williams?

  16. wow, color me surprised that the dolphins decided to take care of a franchise legend.
this regime isn’t exactly “friendly” to the veterans of the club.
Hope it’s the retirement announcement, and if it is, congrats to Zach!

  17. Zach Thomas was one of the most underrated players in history. It was a pleasure watching him for all of those years in aqua and orange. I wish more players in todays game had his heart and drive. ZT will forever be one of the greatest LB’s in Dolphin Franchise. Thanks 54

  18. Why are all the comments suggesting that Miami is doing some rarely seen, classy act? If you spend 10+yrs with a Franchise and leave that team. They often will give you the 1 day contract/press conference so you can cry and hold your kid on your lap.

  19. Great that Zach retires as a Dolphin (refused to go the the Patriots). Now if they could just do the something positive with Jake Scott!

  20. Zach, one of my favorite Dolphins of all time… Can’t wait to see your name in the ring of honor and hopefully the Hall real soon

  21. Probably one of the greatest stories in the NFL and one of the best MLB to ever play! Hopefully he’ll be inducted into the ring of honor this season!

  22. Great player, he must be pissed at his brother in-law though, I would love to be a fly on the wall at one of their family get together’s, Zach hated us more than Jason.

You dont keep up with the dolphins very much do you? I have always been a fan but they have really treated some of there long time players pretty poorly as of late
