Bill Romanowski calls Brian Cushing a liar

Well, they say it takes one to know one.  During his playing career, linebacker Bill Romanowski was one.  And now Bill Romanowski knows one.

In an appearance earlier today on Sirius XM’s Mad Dog Radio, Romanowski discussed the recent four-game suspension imposed on Texans linebacker Brian Cushing, who tested positive for hCG last September.

“[H]ere’s the deal,” Romanowski said, “The only way you can get that substance that he took, hCG, in your body is to inject it, okay?  So let’s get that clear.  So his sob story on TV was, I’m just going to say, was a total lie, okay?

“Do you think when he was getting injected in his ass that he didn’t know what was going on?  Well, bullcrap.  Let’s get real.  Be honest about it, Brian.  I’m sorry you got caught but be honest about it.  What that substance is is a substance from pregnant women’s urine and what it does is when you have taken a cycle of steroids it turns your system back on from being shut down.  It is very, very common in bodybuilding.  That is a bodybuilding supplement, or a bodybuilding drug, where when these bodybuilders go on massive doses of steroids for months at a time, they will take that drug to turn their normal system back on and get it working again.”

After he retired from football, Romanowski admitted to using steroids during his career.  And that makes Romanowski’s observation regarding the testing program confusing, to say the least.

“The NFL has been doing it, testing athletes, for 30 years and clearly they are one of the cleanest sports in the world when it comes to that,” Romanowski said.  “People think that football players are doing a lot of stuff.  Well, if they are they’re playing Russian roulette.  So the NFL has done an outstanding job policing that.  Are they perfect?  No, but they have done an outstanding job.”

Outstanding enough to catch Cushing.  But not outstanding enough to catch Romanowski.

I don’t like Romanowski, but the man has a point.
Who would know more about steroids than *that* guy?
I’d trust his word more than Cushing’s agent or defense attorney.

your so dumb florio, heres the article from USA Today back in 2005. He took the stuff towards the end of his career and got caught. Get your facts straight you bum
Bill Romanowski used steroids and human growth hormone supplied by Victor Conte, the former NFL linebacker tells CBS’ 60 Minutes in an interview to be broadcast Sunday.
Romanowski said he took illegal steroids for a two-year period starting in 2001 and got them from Conte, the former head of the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative, which has been at the center of a steroids controversy in several sports.
“I took (human growth hormone) for a brief period and … I definitely didn’t receive what I got out of THG,” Romanowski said, referring to another drug he got from Conte.
In November 2003, the NFL notified Romanowski that he tested positive for the steroid THG.

    you are a joke
A guy who has admitted to lying to everyone to make himself relevant (Romanowski + steroids), makes a statement that somehow makes him relevant again, and we are supposed to blindly follow your lead and believe him?
For someone who went through law school, you sure make a great amount of assumptions. I guess that makes you desperate to be relevant.

  19. The Wishbone says: May 21, 2010 3:18 PM

Testing 10 guys on a 53 man roster is “outstanding”?
    LOL.
The NFL is a p.r. machine, therefore they have to pretend to care about illegal drugs. But if they actually cared, the testing system would be 100 times stronger. It’s just more hypocrisy. And it’s not a big deal. It’s professional sports. People just need to grow up and understand that.

Not slamming Romanowski, just saying Canseco was trashed when he started whistleblowing, but the man has beeen pretty spot on with every accusation he’s made. Everyone hates him for being a part of the clture, then ratting out everyone else and how its done. Fact is, if you don;t wanna get caught, don’t do it. dont be mad at someone else for telling everyone what you did. If you did it, face the reprocussions.

  31. Raydahz says: May 21, 2010 3:29 PM

These comments are ridiculous. Romanowski didn’t accuse anyone of anything. He’s just educating people on the drug and pointing out that it’s an injectable, so for Cushing to say he didn’t know what was going on is pretty dishonest.

  34. dlmcc0909 says: May 21, 2010 3:45 PM

Romanowski has absolutely no reason to make things up about Cushing. He is giving his opinion and I respect it because the guy obviously knows about steroids. thats all he is doing. He isnt saying he saw the guy do it, hes just pointing out for you that theres a reason why this substance shows up on athletes and that its common in steroid cycles.
So who do you want to believe? A loser who does know a thing or two about steroids, or a football player who just got busted for a failed test. I go with common sense which is something that has been lost on this country. If a man is testing positive for a chemical that would only show up in womans urine, then he either hasa Mangina or he is doing steroids. Im going with the steroid conclusion

  35. Slow Joe says: May 21, 2010 3:48 PM

    your so dumb florio…
@dtcharlieb: Do you not sense the immense irony with just your opening sentence fragment? Here’s a few hints: You are calling someone dumb while misspelling a word (it’s “You’re”, not “your”), leaving out a comma, and forgetting to capitalize two words. And you managed to make all those mistakes in just your first four words.
Dude, I don’t care about your opinion of Florio, but if you are challenging someone’s intelligence, try to not to look like such a stupid ass in your own right.
Also, I can’t stand Romo, but he has a hot wife so that’s something.

Look, I don’t know Romo from anyone but I have read a whole lot of articles and interviews from and about the guy and he may be the most fanatical person about supplements, steroids and anything involving performance enhancements. Cushing’s positive test was in November, Florio. September was when the A test was positive and the B test was negative. But I guess we’ll ignore that since it might cause reasonable doubt as we wonder why he didn’t test positive for anything else during that time frame.

  47. Drat says: May 21, 2010 4:51 PM

Oh, give me a break. There are a zillion reasons to conclude Cushing is a stinky groin, but not one of those reasons is because Romanowski says so. It’s like Landis, who lied, stole, cheated, hacked computer systems, and who knows what else, moaning about the man that beat him all the time, Armstrong. There are just certain cases in which all the crybaby stuff is hilariously absurd. Keep Romanowski off this website, it makes me sick to my stomach.

  48. manofaiki says: May 21, 2010 4:52 PM

I’m not sure if the fact that a former NFL steroid cheater talking about it adds any weight to it, but all he’s saying is what everybody knows.
If you are a healthy adult male with no tumors or rare form of cancer and you test positive for hCG, there’s only ONE WAY it got there.
And that means Cushing is lying is ass off.

You should’ve seen Romo on OTL today. I agree with him on Cushing and the existence of hcg in Cushing’s body.
But you should’ve seen him arguing that people should be taking hgh and that Galea is a pioneer in his field… They had him debate with some guy with the USADA. It was hilarious. Romo’s a huge meathead and retiring from the NFL hasn’t changed that.

The NFL drug policy is a joke simply put in place to make it look like there is some effort to keep the game clean. The NFL is less about the sport and more about the business.
Look at the no-nonsense way the FA handles doping in England and you can see the difference. Paddy Kenny was busted for using ephedrine, an item on the banned substance list, and was banned for 9 months. When you handle cheating like that it sends a strong message and the players will be more likely to compete in an honest manner.
But this is America where we want bigger stronger faster and the average joe does not care about integrity.

Or maybe they didn’t try as hard when Romanowski played. Anyone that paid attention then knew he was a spiker. He had the same look on his face that Cushing had last season. Bill spit on guys and tried to yank their arms out of the socket during tackles. I saw him give a Raider QB-I think it was Hostetler-a throat chop after an interception, away from the play. He was crazy.

Florio was (correctly) suggesting that Romanowski was on ‘roids his entire career and only got caught at the end. And there is no confusion or contradiction here for me. Romanowski just knew how to take masking agents and was a couple steps ahead of the NFL’s testing policy when he played (until the end of his career). He always had those EAS hats on — anyone who had those were using steroids. Shannon Sharpe, etc. It was a company that basically subsidized their PED usage.

  62. Djaehne says: May 24, 2010 7:49 PM

Bill Romanowski = irrelevant, all you people just want to be noticed while standing on your soap box, whatever Cushing did, he’s paying for it just

How many out there have been caught and not

the bad guys nobody needs to protect.
