Belichick, Shanahan, Carroll among sports' highest-paid coaches

Three of the five highest-paid coaches in North American sports are in the National Football League.

A Forbes report pegs Phil Jackson of the Los Angeles Lakers as the highest-paid coach overall, at $10.3 million a year. But after Jackson, three of the next four are in the NFL.

Those three, according to Forbes, are Patriots coach Bill Belichick, at $7.5 million, Redskins caoch Mike Shanahan, at $7 million, and Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, also at $7 million.

Belichick and Shanahan, both of whom have multiple Super Bowl rings, certainly have accomplished enough on the sidelines to merit hefty paychecks. Carroll might seem out of place in the $7 million club, having been fired in his two previous stints as an NFL head coach. But he wouldn’t have left a high-paying job at USC unless an NFL owner was willing to offer him an even higher-paying job, and Seahawks owner Paul Allen was.

According to Forbes, one other NFL coach is in the Top 10: Jeff Fisher of the Titans, at $5.75 million.

Don’t be hard on Carroll. I think Shanahan and Belichik have been fired before as well. And probably will be again.

Profootballtalk.coms mike florio ranks in at number 489 of lowest paid writers making a wopping 15k a year but he also recieves tickets to vikings games. Mds probably makes more money selling drugs than florio in a year.

  9. afiresnake says: May 23, 2010 12:46 PM

    7.5 Mio?
Interesting that they seem to know how much he is being paid if nobody seems to be knowing how long his contract actually runs.

Raheem Morris makes $10/hour. And boy is he over paid.

    Shanahan..146-95 record…2-0 in Super Bowls.
    Carroll…….. 33-31 record….never been to SB.

Boob Kraft should ask for some of his money back, Bellicheat can’t seem to get too far in the playoffs with the aid of illegal videotaping.

  13. smithopher says: May 23, 2010 1:36 PM

hahah thats why Belichick didn’t care that he got fined half a million dollars for spygate. Maybe everybody really was doing it but they figured he was the one who could afford what they wanted to do about it.

  14. CanadianVikingFan says: May 23, 2010 1:57 PM

I’m curious as to what Jim Caldwell makes, it’s probably too much seeing as it is Peyton who makes everyone better, it’s Peyton who leads the team to the playoffs and it’s Peyton who says who stays and who goes. Until Peyton retires or is gone from Colts football they should be named the Indianapolis Peytons.

    Nice research, Icy. Thanks.
BB is worth every penny. Afterall, it’s not my money and it doesn’t count against the cap. And BB isn’t just the coach, he’s a partner in an entertainment empire.

I wonder if the Belicheat* number includes the $500k fine that Kraft almost certainly reimbursed him for for Spygate. As you may recall, within a month or so of the penalty and fine being handed down Kraft redid the Hooded One*’s contract, creating speculation that he did indeed just agree to pay the Cheatah*’s fine for him via the new deal.
In New England*, if you ain’t cheatin’, you ain’t tryin’….

Wow. Elway retired in ’99, and Shanahan is still making bank 11 years later?

  18. whywerule says: May 23, 2010 3:38 PM

Belichick is unlikely to be fired again. I would not be surprised if he and Kraft have already determined when Belichick will retire (when Brady retires). Shanahan and Carroll?…My guess is that Carroll definitely, Shanahan probably.

I wonder if it’s all the same guy posting? There’s no way that 10 different people are this pathetic.

the biggest difference of the three. is two names tom brady and jon elway. those two qbs have made those respective coaches. pete carroll had drew bledsoe. my point is explained.lol

I don’t know, I would think that the biggest difference of the three is that one has been a Coach on 0 SB winning teams, one has been a Coach on 2 SB winning teams, and one has been a Coach on 5 SB winning teams (Belichick was DC on two Giants SB winning teams; of course, Phil
Simms and Lawrence Taylor made Parcells and Belichick — neither Coach ever had any success without those two).

HEY,in Pete Carroll’s defense he did have the highest paid players in college football the last few years.

As a Patriots fan I’m going to enjoy this coming year. With a big infusion of younger players, (10 rookies made the team last year and at least 6 more this year) and the pundits picking against them, I’m going to love listening the the whiny bastards who post here as the Patriots roll through their schedule.
Btw, Raider3:16 and JimmySmith, are you two birdbrains for real? The same tired shit…. Pathetic little girls.

  28. MagicMan407 says: May 23, 2010 6:23 PM

    whywerule-
Then if you look at it your way Shanny has been on 3 superbowl winning teams. Shannahan has 3 rings not just two if we are talking being staff on a team.

Getting out of USC with his reputation intact before the shit hits the fan to claim $7 million is certainly an accomplishment

Brady was picked in the 6th round! Coming out of college, he was nothing! He wasn’t anything until they coached him along. Anyone could have had Brady but no one saw the talent but Belechick. How are you going to take that away from him?

After Jim Zorn I would’nt care if they paid Coach Shanahan $20 million a year !!!
