In a wide-ranging interview on Monday, Eagles quarterback Michael Vick said he understood why teams around the league didn’t try to trade for him this offseason.
“Actually, I understood,” Vick said. “Because I’d been out of football. I didn’t play behind a center for three years. I know how good I am. The [Eagles] coaches know how good I am. I know I could have landed some place, but it wasn’t meant to be.”
The Eagles coaches may know how good Vick is and they won’t let him compete for a starting job. Would Vick be on the team if anyone else wanted him?
Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer slipped a surprising line into his interview.
“There is the perception out there that Vick has to show the Eagles coaches that he comprehends coach Andy Reid’s version of the west coast offense for the 29-year-old to remain on the team,” McLane writes.
That perception is news to us. We think the Eagles are crazy to pay Vick $5.25 million to be their backup, but they have already given him a $1.5 million roster bonus. We haven’t heard much to indicate Vick could get cut. Vick thinks his play will speak for itself.
“I’m faster than I’ve ever been before,” Vick said. “I’m quicker, light on my feet. So I guess somebody missed out this time around. But I guess I’ll make it work here and they’ll see.”
