We heard on Sunday that a vote on applying the new postseason overtime rules to the regular season was possible but not definite at Tuesday’s one-day ownership meeting in Dallas. Peter King of SI.com explains the situation in much more detail in his Monday Morning Quarterback column.
King writes that, if the vote isn’t taken, the decision not to make a decision will be driven by multiple potential concerns. First, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell may not want to “inflame passions” with players, who don’t want overtime to change — and didn’t want it to change for playoff games. Second, Goodell and the Competition Committee may not have the votes to get the measure passed at the moment. Third, the network television partners “aren’t enchanted with the potential delays” resulting from extended overtime games.
But the main impediment — especially in light of the union-friendly American Needle decision — comes from the potential impact of forcing a new overtime procedure on players who prefer things the way they are.
WHO CARES!
Lets talk about the next super bowl champs- The Atlanta Falcons!
AMEN! finally, a voice of reason? Why do we insist on fiddling with things? It’s called defense and special teams. Learn how to play them and quit tinkering with the rules – the game is biased enough towards the offense.
The current system has created exciting games like the long SD – Mia one in 1981 to the quickest of all, a 100 yd return on the opening kickoff. I wish Goodell would stay out of the competition committee’s affairs.
Finally, why extend the game? You mean 3:15 isn’t long enough?
Maybe they did realize the reform is crap and the way it is is the way OT should be played?
I mean, sometimes it takes longer to realize that something that looks good is actually a huge downgrade. The last time that happened was the division realignment from three to four, which still looks extremely nice and neat and clean and still eliminated one good team from the playoffs and gave the fourth playoff spot to the weakest division winner, which is and was a huge downgrade from the three division alignment.
So your “brilliant” idea and one man crusade is starting to backfire? Great. Maybe you’ll keep your nose out of rule changes from now on and allow the game that became great without any help from you, stay great. That whole OT campaign you led was, by far, your most douchebag move since you started this site. The “Bradshaw is dead” thing was an honest mistake by an over eager newbie. The OT campaign was a deliberate attempt to raise your profile no matter what damage it did to the game. Hope the playoff rule gets overturned sooner than later. Couldn’t happen to a more deserving guy.
I agree leave it as is. There is no reason to change it. Who needs to worry about signing players to play D or special times if you change the rule.
Bad enough they changed OT after the regular season, but here are some points-to ponder if its changed during the regular season:
Would guess that would mean all 2nd games would be moved to 4:15 to allow for the extra time?
Does that also mean no prelim to some 2nd games because the first game is not over?
Does that also mean that some west coast fans may not see the end of a game because the network has to start the second game?
The only ones that are crying are the teams whose defense or special teams couldn’t do their jobs.
Leave it alone.
wow, I’m surprised there’s so much support for the current rule…I thought it was just oldtimers like me that want see teams play D and special teams. Sweet!
I hope this is the start of more leveling of the playing field so that the D gets a fairer shake.
I think the current system sucks. At least play until 6 in the OT so that one team doesnt get some lucky nonsense and kick a field goal. Or worse some lame referee call for 15 yards or greater puts them within field goal range. The kicking game should never be that important.
Hmmmm… since the NFL owner did an ‘end-around’ past the coaches and voted this in without their input, is Peter King really suggesting that the NFL owners care about what the players want?
lol… that’s rich.
The NFL has tapped its brakes on OT reform….
However, it seems that they have floored the accelerator on ‘T.O. reform.’
Keep that whiny sum’bitch outta the league!
NO! NO! NO! NO!
All of you misguided posters to this site……….. you need to get witht he program and deal with the reality of how things work. This is how all of this came about:
It’s the ref’s fault, don’t you know?
It’s part of the NFL conspiracy to give the Saints a Superbowl over the Vikings.
It’s the fault of the Saint’s playing “dirty”.
Area 51 is where the second shooter on the grassy knoll lives in silence as a former KGB spy working for the aliens along with Bigfoot and the Lock Ness Monster.
Actually, this is just the beginning of the fall-out resulting from all of the mind numbing complaining about how the Vikes (boo-hoo) lost the poor whittle NFC Championship Game. Now it’s come home to roost.
Good job, whiners, let’s just confuse all the NFL rules and be very inconsistent about important things like this! I used to respect Farve and like the Vikings organization. Now I can’t stand ‘em.
