Del Rio says Manuwai needs to lose weight, get better

Jacksonville Jaguars guard Vince Manuwai started all 16 games last season. But coach Jack Del Rio says that if Manuwai doesn’t get better, he’s not going to be a starter — and might not have a job at all.

“I think Vinny still has a ways to go,” Del Rio told Vito Stellino of the Florida Times-Union. “I think Vinny’s working at it. He’s got his weight down. He’s trying, but he needs to play better. I think he knows that. He’s working hard at it.”

Manuwai is listed at 333 pounds and appeared to gain weight after a 2008 knee injury that forced him to miss 15 games. But Del Rio says injuries are no excuse.

“At some point, you’ve got to get beyond that, and he knows that,” Del Rio said.

Manuwai said he agrees with Del Rio’s assessment that he needs to get better.

“I understand,” Manuwai said. “I feel the same way.”

Manuwai has more competition now, with the signing of Smiley from the Dolphins.
Competition will make them all better. Monroe and Britton will improve in their 2nd years at OT, and the line as a whole looks stronger. Don’t count out Kynan Forney–he’s a work out beast and Del Rio is pretty high on him.

I am sick of hearing about Kynan Forney. There is a reason the guy was signed off the street last year in midseason. Smiley, Uche and Vince need to be the starters but if Vince can’t stop inflating I say start Meester at Center and Uche & Smiley at guards. Not much of an upgrade over last year though. Ideal would be Vince being a solid guard again that is able to move his feet and at least engage a delayed blitzer. So many times a stunt was run against him and he was too slow so the blitzer comes free and a sack happens. I bet 30% of the sacks Garrard took last year came from untouched blitzers up the middle of the line.
