Gerhart unhappy that his race has become an issue

Last month Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports broke two stories about two NFL draft prospects who were asked questions by teams that would have been considered completely out of bounds in an interview for almost any other job.

One of those was about Miami Dolphins G.M. Jeff Ireland asking Dez Bryant if his mom was a prostitute. The other was about teams asking Toby Gerhart if being a white running back made him feel entitled.

The Gerhart story didn’t create quite the media firestorm that the Bryant story did, but it still bothers Gerhart that people are trying to pigeonhole him as a white running back, and not just a running back.

It’s kind of frustrating because I’m completely neutral towards it,” Gerhart told the Star Tribune. “I don’t see it as an issue. I downplay it if anybody asks me. I’m a running back. That article kind of blew up and everybody started saying, ‘Oh, you are an advocate or you’re speaking out against whatever.’ I’m like, ‘No, I don’t see it that way.’”

Gerhart says people sometimes assume that he’s a fullback — not a tailback — simply because of the color of his skin. In reality, Gerhart is an explosive runner who came in second place in Heisman Trophy voting last year and isn’t projected as a fullback in the NFL.

In fact, Vikings coach Brad Childress says, Gerhart is the kind of athlete who’d be more likely to play wide receiver than fullback.

“Don’t put him in a box,” Childress said. “He might be split wide like a foot from the sideline.”

If he is split a foot from the sideline, we’ll no doubt start to hear from some quarters that Gerhart is a Wes Welker clone. But Gerhart wishes people would see beyond race and just call him a football player.

Fantasy football players are going to be referring to him as a goal line thief this year. Especially since AP can’t hold onto the ball.
His numbers this year could be similar to Lendale White’s 2008 season.

His race won’t be an issue if he becomes a great runningback in the NFL.
If he doesn’t it won’t be because of his race but because he really isn’t that good.
The guy graduated from Stanford with a Science and Engineering degree. If anything he should feel entitled because he is 10000xs smarter than most NFL players and has a degree in something other than Sports Management.
…and people wonder why PFT has a ‘Turd Watch’?… or maybe they don’t.

Gerhart – don’t sweat it. Even if you fail at your NFL dream, there are still career opportunities for ugly, pasty white guys.
I mean – look at Florio

Gerhart is a Wes Welker clone… if Wes Welker was 6’1″, 230lb running back. I mean, all hard working white guys are alike right?
Oh, and Gerhart is NOT explosive. Whoever sees that on film needs to fix their VHS player. Powerful and well balanced, but not explosive or fast. The trouble for me is the lack of wiggle. Even Brandon Jacobs had some wiggle when he ran.

  8. Kelso says: May 26, 2010 10:46 AM

Reminds me of John Riggins. Only problem is, defenses are a lot quicker and stronger these days. I think he’ll be a nice back, but not a probowler. Don’t really agree with the Wes Welker clone thing. Even if he does line up in the slot. He’s got 3-4 inches and 40-50 lbs on Welker. Only an idiot would link them simply b/c of the color of their skin.

Since 2008 everything seems to come down to race, we have almost become a country divided by racial lines, and that is a shame. We need to stand together under the three colors that matter and those are those of the American flag (Or whatever country you are in right now).

Bingo. Every white WR is compared to either Welker or Ed McCaffery every game — even if their game, build, etc. is nothing like those two.
Gerhart was a stellar RB last year at Stanford. He thoroughly dominated Oklahoma’s stout front 7 with Stanford’s starting QB out of the lineup in their bowl game. His production was off the charts. Incredible balance. Good vision. He’s 230 lbs+ and runs a 4.5 forty. Yet left and right people are talking up this idea that he’ll make a good FB. No way. As awesome as Adrian Peterson is, if he doesn’t fix his fumbling issues I could see Gerhart eventually taking over in Minnesota while Peterson is dealt to the Cowboys or Redskins or some other star-hungry team for a 1st-round draft pick.

So play him at WR, how many plays is he going to get? how many catches? talk about misuse of a player. To the other 31 teams, Chilly is a dimwit and this is just another classic example of what can happen when you hire a coach with an IQ below the average temp in Minneapolis in Nov.

Race should not matter and I think we have come along way in the last 50 years, more progress needs to be made but I think we are on track.
That being said, its so fing cool to have a White RB with RB1 potential in the league. It is something cool to have fun with your friends and what not. Again its just a fun concept not a movement.

  51. Catamount says: May 26, 2010 12:07 PM

One reason there aren’t any white running backs is due to the fact that from Pee Wee league up, coaches move whites to other positions–White coaches do this as much as black coaches. Most of the white RBs who make the NFL get moved to FB immediately. Brad Hoover went to an all-white school where there were no blacks to be RB. He was not heavily recruited but he dominated. He got a scholarship to Western Carolina–they initially tried to move him. He dominated. In the NFL he was not drafted, but made the Panthers as a FB. He was pressed into RB duties due to injuries, and with the added weight, still ran for 100 yards a few times. Could he have been a good RB? We will never know, but you can see how even a successful white RB has to overcome huge odds just to get a chance. I mean, Western Carolina had a RB capable of running for over 100 yards in the NFL and they try to move him to another position when he arrives. Why? WHITENESS.

would white people just stfu? you are white. you are in america. if you can’t succeed then it means you are a total loser. it’s not affirmative action or rooney rules or any of these things.
gehart if you can play then show it, but stop bitching about how unfair it is to be white in america.

Wow, it’s like being back in the ’60s again. You should probably make sure to hang your hood at the door, next time.
I have to laugh at your first statement because blacks ALWAYS had to change position. Marlin Brisco was a QB but he had to become a WR. Black QBs were so rare because they were NEVER given a chance to even go to camp as a QB (Which is why Warren Moon went to Canada). Other than Tim Tebow, what high profile WHITE QBs were strongly told that they need to change positions because they didn’t have what it took to play QB in the NFL and yet, every year, some black QB ends up entering the draft as a WR or a DB because no one wants to take the time to groom them as NFL QBs (but they’ll sure as hell keep a white QB on the bench for 3 or 4 years).
As for your second statement: a lot of non-whites in the league play without getting in legal trouble, as well.

It is truly amazing how many people are completely missing what he is saying. I didn’t think anyone could sound as stupid as JimmySmith, that bar was set so high it seemed improbable (like Aaron Rodger’s ability to lead the Packer’s to the big dance) but low and behold… several of you have stepped way over that line. Gerhart isn’t complaining about being white or saying he has it hard as a white running back in the NFL… His point is that fans and media should look past race/ethnicity and just like a football player for his ability as an athlete.

It doesn’t really matter much what color he is, its what color uniform he will wear. Gay purple was never won anything and Toby isn’t going to change that anytime soon. If he is smart, he will sign a 4 year contract so he can return to play in California soon.

Poor oppressed 2nd round pick, Stanford graduate, professinal athlete who will make $Millions over the next decade. I feel so sorry for him.
This is a freaking joke. I’m sure it was painful when the poor white kid had the firehoses and police dogs all over him the first time he tried out as a runningback.
Maybe this will change Rand Paul’s mind about the Civil Rights Act. If Gerhart can’t live up ,will the media give him a pass like Rush Limbaugh thinks the media does with black QBs?
What a little b!+@#. I hope he gets crushed.
    ———————————————————–
congratulations, you win dumbsh!t of the day with that little rant…
he wasn’t saying anything about being oppressed or having some kind of setback because of his race. he was saying it’s a shame that the media focuses on race so much.
so that makes him a “little b!+@#”? something tells me you’re a “little b!+@#” judging by the rancor and stupidity of your post
you didn’t even read the article did you? or did you actually read it and just not comprehend all those big 7th grade reading level words correctly?
    idiot.

  96. twindaddy says: May 27, 2010 8:06 AM

It’s amazing how much race is still an issue in this country. Why can’t people just be people? Why do you have to be labeled white or black or whatever? Why can’t all you tools just look past the color of skin and see the idiot within? There are great athlete’s from all races and there are retards in all races.
I just don’t understand why race is such a huge issue and why people keep making it a huge issue.

  97. sadviking says: May 27, 2010 11:21 AM

Since 2008 everything seems to come down to race, we have almost become a country divided by racial lines, and that is a shame.

Read again what Gerhart actually said:
“It’s kind of frustrating because I’m completely neutral towards it,” Gerhart told the Star Tribune. “I don’t see it as an issue. I downplay it if anybody asks me. I’m a running back. That article kind of blew up and everybody started saying, ‘Oh, you are an advocate or you’re speaking out against whatever.’ I’m like, ‘No, I don’t see it that way.’”
I highlight: “I’m completely neutral towards it. I don’t see it as an issue.”
Why are you all making it sound like he is making it an issue? He isn’t. YOU are. Back off on the “Gerhart is calling himself a victim!” comments. He clearly isn’t.

Indirect racism– cue Jimmy the Greek. Except that there still aren’t enough black hockey players in the NHL or amongst NFL assistant coaches and back office, who cares? You play well, you get carries as Vikings running back whether you’re AD or Bill Brown.

White, black, asian, latino, indian, islander, martian, goat, dog, rat it does not matter the man got drafted by the Vikings. His destiny is to choke, to fail, to lose, to cry, to whine then fade into obscurity. Or move to L.A.
P.S. Q: You know why the Vikings wear purple?
A: Because that is the color you turn when you choke.

Aside from the whole Gearhart thing, it is sad how EVERY white WR is compared to Wes Welker. Every time I watched a Texas game this year I had to hear “He is going to be a nice WR in the NFL in a Wes Welker-type mold” anytime Jordan Shippley caught the ball.
How come nobody ever says that about Reggie Bush? If anyone compares to Welker, its him.

If you think they hand out jobs because you are white, you are mistaken. That could be one of the dumbest comments I’ve ever seen on a message board. I’ve seen a ton, but that one could be tops.
I hope that isn’t the common thought among that person’s non-white demographic. I have some heard countless horror stories about the inner city schools though in Phila.
