Now that the NFL has awarded a Super Bowl to a cold-weather city without a dome, every other cold-weather city without a dome is going to want one. And that includes Green Bay.
There’s already a movement afoot among Packers fans to get a Super Bowl at Lambeau Field, and Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy says he’d like to look into it.
Murphy says hosting a Super Bowl in Green Bay is “very intriguing, but there are a lot of logistical requirements that need to be researched.”
For those of us who love NFL history and love outdoor football in the cold, it would be great to see the championship of the NFL determined at Lambeau Field for the first time since the Ice Bowl in 1967.
Realistically, however, there’s no chance of it happening. The NFL has already indicated that it’s not going to bend the rule requiring cities to have an average February temperature of 50 degrees or play in a dome for cities other than New York. And because of the need for hotel rooms, Green Bay couldn’t host all of the Super Bowl week festivities -- the only viable option would be to have all of the Super Bowl events two hours away in Milwaukee.
But even though it’s not going to happen, Murphy is right: The idea is very intriguing.
