Hey Michael David Smith, I can’t believe you’re arguing that ESPN has some kind of obligation to play this publicly.
What a horrible precedent.
Does this mean we shouldn’t trust what you report unless we hear a tape of it? Coz that’s the foxhole you’re going down. You’re basically insinuating ESPN might not have done a good job reporting job.
People gotta trust professionals to do their jobs. And we do it in other walks of life.
Otherwise every asshat can claim they were “misquoted”.

How is ESPN classy? This makes no sense… what’s the difference between TYPING it out to read and PLAYING the tape to hear??
It’s the same exact quote isn’t it?? Or was it that ESPN stretched the truth or Bowe said much worse before ESPN edited it down… hmmmm

And some of your readers want to hear directly from your source to see if Steve Smith really called Jimmy Clausen a punk or if your source is the team towel boy and suspect at best. But that’s not going to happen either.

I’m laughing so hard at these guys saying ESPN isn’t airing the tape because they’re classy. It’s because it’s Dwayne Bowe! If this were Terrell Owens, Michael Vick, Reggie Bush, etc…they’d have an hour long intro to the tape with six analysts. Chris Mortenson would tell me how this tape affects free agency. It’s a dull story from a dull player, really. To act that surprised means people think other teams don’t do this. This isn’t even half as bad as the Vikings boat incident.
Truthfully speaking, ESPN is setting themselves up for criticism here by saying they have proof but won’t share it. That just makes them seem like liars to not even play it for the media on top of that. All of these people saying ESPN did the right thing, why? What reason do they have to not show it? Bowe knew he was being taped. If some news organization handled a politician this way they’d be chastised for withholding the truth.

This is just plain stupid. Great school is LSU. Yesterday he apologized to “the Clarks” for all this. The Chiefs are owned by the Hunts–read ‘Clark’ Hunt. This is his 4th year in KC!!!! He also commented how much he liked playing for Charlie “Rice.” Three times! Just a plain ignorant human being who’d be working at a car wash if not for football.

ESPN should not play the tape publicly unless Bowe gives his consent. Bowe knows what he said or didn’t say. If he didn’t say it, he would file suit. If he chooses not to pursue ESPN in a civil suit, there is no reason for ESPN to play the tape publicly and further humiliate Bowe.
(And for anyone questioning whether ESPN actually has a tape or not, get real this was an interview and Bowe knows whether or not he was being recorded. ESPN was politely reminding Bowe that the interview was recorded with his consent.)

Remember when Harry Reid was quoted in a book saying Obama had “no negro dialect?” He took his lumps like a man. He didn’t claim he was misquoted, that the quote was fabricated, etc.
Young athletes have no respect for the press or for the truth. If they get caught saying something stupid or incriminating, they will then claim that they were “misquoted” or “quoted out of context,” even when they know they weren’t. They’ll perpetuate that lie until a tape is played proving that they are lying about being “misquoted.”
ESPN the Magazine should play the tape. It will send a clear message to other athletes that there is no benefit to attacking the integrity or competence of a reporter whenever they are quoted saying something dumb.

So, let me see if I understand this. ESPN is saying publicly have a tape that will vindicate them, but they will not play it. They will tell everyone they have it, make a big issue of it, but not play it? Sports journalism? That’s an oxymoron. They should have said “we stand by our story” and been done with it. They are being to cute by half.

ESPN’s standing invitation to Bowe to listen to the tape, and their decision not to publicly broadcast it, is the right way to go. Bowe’s declining to listen to it likely comes from already knowing what’s on it.
