The fate of Reggie Bush's Heisman could be known on Friday

Our brethren at CFT have posted an item on the forthcoming fate of the USC football program.

And so we’ll encourage you to check it out, and we’ll raise the one question that has the most NFL relevance depending on the announcement that is expected for Friday.

Will Saints running back Reggie Bush lose his Heisman Trophy if it turns out that he was ineligible for all or part of the 2005 season?

When the allegations first arose that Bush and/or his family received cash and/or prizes from a prospective agent, the powers-that-be with the Downtown Athletic Club made it clear that, if Bush is determined retroactively to have been ineligible, the Heisman Trophy could be at risk.

Of course, that was four years ago.

It has been presumed that the award simply would be packed up and shipped to Titans quarterback Vince Young, who finished second in the voting.  Maybe they’d simply conduct the balloting again.

We wonder if anyone will revolt against the process by voting for Brian Cushing.

…i’m sure sorry-ass vy would be thrilled @ that prospect – that’s all he needs…a used heisman trophy to vault him to the hof…he’s movin’ on up, yada yada yada…

Can we take away Matt Leinart’s as well?

  4. jshawaii says: May 30, 2010 7:20 PM

So, the players, all of them, unless they were a redshirt freshman, are all gone.
The coaches, I would assume with PC going with the Seahawks, that they are all gone.
“Punishment” at this late date is meaninless to anyone who was part of the problem ( except the boosters / agents that sourround the team). Take away wins? the Heisman? – so what! Does anyone think Reggie cares less?
Why not just pay the football & basketball players? $10k minimum up to $50k a year for starters, with bonuses tied to performance and attendance / grades. They could learn early in life a little about $$$, paying taxes. Schools could give less perks (buy own text books, supplies) to offset some of the cost.
Anything is better then this nonsense.

    Your headline is completely false!!!
No matter what the NCAA has to say on Friday, the fate of Bush’s Heisman will not be known!
That decision rests solely with the Heisman Trust, and two things are known. 1) They will not be making any decision on Friday and 2) No matter what the NCAA has to say they are not likely to strip Bush of his award at this point (something they have already stated)

  6. TryTheVeal says: May 30, 2010 7:50 PM

USC was the dominant program for years in the NCAA…Albeit they played in the soft PAC-10…But basically they put out junk, bush, leinhardt, cushing, williams, white and countless others…As much as the U put out illiterate criminals, they put out players who could play in the NFL and coaches who could lead…………USC in the last decade is the biggest joke in NCAA history……

  7. bob_loblaw says: May 30, 2010 7:53 PM

who gives a sh!t if he got paid or not…he deserved the award anyway. there wasn’t anyone remotely as good as he was that year
damn florio i don’t know who’s worse: you w/ the continual consumption of hateraide for the saints or yahoo writer jason cole’s man crush on reggie
wouldn’t it be a better story if he was accused of taking steroids?

  8. Jack Torres says: May 30, 2010 7:57 PM

    A. jshawaii: Lane Kiffin (check), maybe he should be punished.
    B. Hail2ThaRedksins: you answered your own question with the Downtown Athletic Club tidbit
    C. revote could only favor Young considering the Rose Bowl Performance (how could it not)
    D. Bush deserves it for the 2005 regular season so it should and will stay with him

Whats funny is ppl trashing on USC forgetting how many players are currently in the NFL? Sure you say Bush,Leinart but what about Polamalu?

  10. downwithdansnyder says: May 30, 2010 8:24 PM

You don’t revote. The cushing thing was so stupid it was painful. If you run a race(car race, 100 meter whatever) and it’s found the winner cheated or is disqualified, you do NOT re-run the race. #2 wins.

  11. JJRS89 says: May 30, 2010 8:44 PM

    VY Heiman Trophy winner!

  12. RonnieRon says: May 30, 2010 8:46 PM

hey prmpft you must be a trojan fan, your pissed because VY ran roughshod on your team, and to call Vince Young sorry you must be a true idiot, his winning record says he is not sorry. to make a stupid statement like that you must not know a lot about Football, whats wrong prmpft you mad because Leinart (sp) he is so sorry i cant even remember how to spell his name. Are you mad because whats his name is a bust in the NFL…. learn something about the nfl before you go shooting your mouth off. That Heisman Trophy belongs to Vince Young anyway Bush never should have won it. And VY proved it by dominating wait destroying the Trojan Defense it was magic watching him surgically piss on USC sorry your mad Son but reality is reality. Now Learn…

  13. irishsamurai says: May 30, 2010 9:18 PM

i think they should just drop it,someone got a bug up thier butt and chased USC,who knows how many other college athletes are out there getting paid, there is no way to follow all of them, its all crap and all corrupt,so they should just sit down, shut up and enjoy some great college football. Stop looking a gift horse in the mouth

  14. Kay Bee says: May 30, 2010 9:23 PM

IF he loses his Heisman, which I doubt, I’m sure he wouldn’t give a crap.
Super Bowl ring > Heisman Trophy

  15. Hail2ThaRedskins says: May 30, 2010 9:34 PM

    Try The Veal,
I think you are forgetting some former Trojans that have had great NFL careers…
    Carson Palmer
    Troy Palomalu
    Jack Torres,
What question of mine did I answer? Did I even ask a question?

  16. SonsCompass says: May 30, 2010 10:03 PM

Remember when Bush was supposed to be the second coming of Barry Sanders? He turned out to be like the RB version of Peter Warrick.

  17. Franchise says: May 30, 2010 10:40 PM

To bad Reggie isnt even the best RB on his team.
Maybe he should give the Heisman to te best RB in NO, Pierre Thomas.

  18. JPerkVA says: May 30, 2010 10:44 PM

Even if they strip him of the Heisman, he may not care too awful much…he may have not lived up to expectations but he does have a Superbowl ring…I know which one I would rather have…

I agree, people love to say how Reggie Bush has a Super Bowl ring, but you know what i think about that!!!??? Chase Daniels, Mark Brunell, Jammal Brown have a ring now and Shockey has TWO rings, one with the Giants, in other words, you can be a backup and do Nothing and have a ring. Bush isn’t the reason why the Saints won a Super Bowl, it was Brees, Pierre Thomas, Jabri Greer/Tracy Porter and of course GREAT coaching on offense and defense.

Hilarious – dimwit, you don’t know jack about football.
For example: 2005 Rose Bowl, VY: Twenty-one carries, 192 yards, four touchdowns on the ground, 16-of-28, 180 yards and one touchdown in the air, in a 38-37 last second victory over Lamar Woodley, Steve Breaston, Chad Henne, Braylon Edwards, and the rest of the Michigan Wolverines
2006 Rose Bowl, VY: Vince Young accounted for 467 yards in the Rose Bowl, which is the best performance ever in a BCS Championship game, along with 3 TD’s in beating Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush, Lendale White, NY Giants Pro-Bowl receiver Steve Smith, Pete Carroll, and the USC Trojans.

Reggie Bush was a HUGE part of the Saints’ success this season. He single-handedly beat the Cardinals in the playoffs…and scored a key TD in the NFC Championship. He actually did more than Jabari Greer in the postseason.

  22. Abe71 says: May 31, 2010 1:27 AM

Do we really give a turd? Does this make Reggie Bush less money and does this hinder his career? NOPE! Next!

  23. Michael LaRocca says: May 31, 2010 5:24 AM

    Give it to Tebow

  24. dgil7707 says: May 31, 2010 7:03 AM

Hell! Who cares! I’d trade a superbowl ring for a heisman any day!

  25. GBfanForever says: May 31, 2010 8:39 AM

please, Bush may not be Barry Sanders but you know you love for him to be on your team. The guy is still a weapon.

  26. stiller43 says: May 31, 2010 9:17 AM

Dear god, no one (besides Reggie, his fam, and whoever might get it as a result) cares! How is this an actual punishment?

  27. BigEasy says: May 31, 2010 11:09 AM

i dont agree, he had ONE good postseason game, BUT what did he do vs. the Minnesota Vikings??? What did he do vs. the Colts??? Nothing, he was little use. The Saints could replace Bush with Joe McKnight and not miss a beat.
    @mwcarolina
“please, Bush may not be Barry Sanders but you know you love for him to be on your team. The guy is still a weapon”
GBFan, i think Bush is a good weapon, BUT he’s a Running back and how does he run???? not that well at all, there are at least 25 guys better than Bush at running the ball. Bush has not proven he’s a consistant runner, Bush is NOT worth the money he’s paid, he was called the next Marshall Faulk, wrong. People continue to bash Tim Tebow, but love this overhyped guy!!!

  29. mwcarolina says: May 31, 2010 12:07 PM

agree there, this is old news, who cares if they take away his Heisman or not. What’s done is done. Bush and Carroll are both in the pros now, Carroll may surprise some in the pros, Bush is the same, good weapon, not a good running back.

  30. prophet of the light says: May 31, 2010 1:40 PM

Reggie Bush wasn’t the best player on his team at USC, let alone the best in the nation. The OL on that team was insane. 5 NFL starters. Yes, 5 NFL lineman on an offense with great players like Reggie Bush, Lendale white, Matt Leinart, and that “great” WR core.
I think we know who deserves the Heisman.
