If 49ers don't get Santa Clara stadium, fallback plans in place

In a week, voters will decide whether to approve a stadium project for the San Francisco 49ers to play their games in Santa Clara. The 49ers are spending big to campaign for the stadium, but if the vote doesn’t go the way they want, a couple of other suitors are already lining up to be the 49ers’ fallback plans.

The San Jose Mercury News reports that former 49ers President Carmen Policy is consulting for the developer of a proposed project in San Francisco that could include a stadium for the 49ers.

“If this doesn’t pass,” Policy said, “they have to look elsewhere. And we are the logical place for them to look.”

The other option would be Oakland, with the 49ers and Raiders sharing a stadium. Oakland officials love that idea.

“I really believe the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum is the best location for a stadium for the Raiders and the 49ers,” Oakland City Councilman Ignacio de la Fuente told the Mercury News.

There has even been some talk that the 49ers could move to Los Angeles if voters turn down the stadium plan, but that doesn’t seem likely. For that matter, the two fallback plans don’t seem likely, either: Polls have shown that most voters favor building the stadium in Santa Clara, and so the 49ers will likely get their first stadium choice.

    It’s not the June 8th vote in Santa Clara that holds all the cards for a stadium there. It’s coming up with the financing for the stadium. Hunters Point (San Francisco) has their financing secured whereas the Santa Clara project does not yet have financing in place. For this reason Mayor Newsome (SF) doesn’t think the Santa Clara stadium will happen, at least not for several years. We shall see just how crafty the 49ers get in securing their financing after the vote passes June 8th, which it will.

    Damn… looks like Eagle fans will be here soon demanding that the 49ers change their name to the Santa Clara 49ers.

    yep, just like the East Rutherford Giants or the Jersey Jets…SMH

    My bad… I should have added Orchard Park Bills fans too… not just Eagles.

    If the 49ers move to LA I will give up football.

    Arlington Cowboys? Landover Redskins?

    A third option is a major upgrade of Candlestick Park along with extensive infrastructure construction, i.e., roads.
    This would be my choice, since I’ve loved my seats at the ‘Stick for the past 30 years.

    Dream on Frisco—-Al Davis wouldn’t share a porta potty with the 49ers.
    If this bill does not pass—-they will be looking to Los Angeles.

    Raider fans, especially their number one fan, Al Davis, will never share with the Whiners.
    Doesn’t Al own the rights to LA? If he does, he should sell the rights and get the Whiners down to LA and we could see the reverse of what happened when the Raiders left Oakland.
    You never know. I know Mayor Newsome will not let the name go like Cleveland did with the Browns.
    If the Whiners leave, it will be a great day in the Bay. There would be tons of Whiner gear in the land fill and a bunch of people crying their lil’ Whiner butts off!
    Santa Clara and Whiner fans, the Whiners don’t care about you or winning, they care about making money with a new stadium, remember that!!!

    @tre_fizzle
    Newsome is talking out of his a$$. The Santa Clara locations is MUCH closer to happening than SF. Thats the entire reason the Niners switched focus to Santa Clara. SF was incapable of coming up with a plan that would work for well over a decade. Newsome WANTS the SC bid to fail and thats why he is talking.
    @Dogsweat
    Dream on? Thats more like a nightmare. The Niners don’t WANT to go to Aokland and the ONLY people who have EVER mentioned that as a possibility are the owners of the Colosium.
    What is much more likely is that the Raiders become a secondary tenant in the SC project (like the Jets in NY…or NJ to be exact)…and I hope that never happens.

    Tear down Candlestick, get effective mass transit their, get a retractable roof and be done with it. SF is riciculously arrogant, particulary the mayor who says Santa Clara does not concern him !! BS, he better be concerned !

    Dogsweat you are a pinhead! 1 foot in the grave Davis has already openly expressed major support for sharing a stadium. In fact he’s trying to get those losers into the Santa Clara stadium if it happens too. It will be the L.A. Jaguars or Vikings period.

    I hate the Whiners but love NFL football. My real 2 cents on the whole thing is both the Whiners and Raiders to beef up their current stadiums.
    Green Bay would never relocate. Lambeu Field is hollowed ground in the football world. I’d like to go see a game out there if things were better.
    The same can be said about the Oakland Coliseum and the Candlestick Park.
    Hollowed grounds. NFL history is all over those venues.
    In the Oakland there’s the Sea of Hands, the Hiedi Bowl and Brett Feave’s tribute to his father to name a few.
    At the Stick, you have The Catch 1 & 2, Rice’s last game and the crazy playoff game with the Giants etc. The Beatles played their final US concert there!
    These parks need to be kept to have their legacy in tack and parents and grandparents can always tell stories of when they saw this game or that moment in football history.
    Legacy is important to the NFL and these teams are a huge part of that and should be here in their own stadiums. Sharing is for the New York team not for the Bay Area!

    I like how you just breezed by all those facts and made your stupid argument anyway.

  17. Bious says: Jun 1, 2010 4:32 PM

    What a total disaster that they can’t find a place actually in the city
    Who wants to drive an hour or so to a game that is supposed to be at “home”?

  18. Marvin49 says: Jun 1, 2010 7:18 PM

    @Bious
    I’m so tired of that response. It simply doesn’t hold water. Who will need to drive an hour for a “home” game? Exactly who is Candlestick “home” for?
    The Fans? Only about 15% of the Season Ticket holders live in SF. a much larger number of them are from the South Bay and many more from the North and East Bay.
    The Team? The Teams HQ has been in Santa Clara for almost 30 years. They only spend 10 days a year at Candlestick. The new stadium BTW, will be closer to “home” than ever before…as in next door.
    The Players? Most of the players got their homes to be in close proximity to the Team HQ…you know, the one in Santa Clara.
    Soooooo…..Who wants to drive an hour? Nobody. Thats why the stadium should be in SC.

  19. kimosabe says: Jun 1, 2010 11:15 PM

    San Francisco/Bay Area is pathetic. This team has won 5 Super Bowls and they are still struggling to get a new stadium. How many less deserving NFL teams have built new stadiums, quite a few I would you say….Niner fans don’t deserve this team. They should move to LA where they are starving for a NFL team, let alone a storied franchise as the 49ers…

  20. rich1939 says: Jun 2, 2010 5:17 PM

    York turned down the new stadium that ED put in place.York dosn’t like San Francisco.what about the fans across the golden gate. think how far they have to drive.the fans are mostly from san francisco, they just moved out of the city.As LA we don’t care if they never get a team they had one an gave up on them.the old 49ers are saying no to the raiders get togther.
