Shanahan says Redskins want Westbrook

Free agent running back Brian Westbrook is expected to make a decision soon about where he’ll play in 2010. Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan hopes it’s in Washington.

We want him to sign with us,” Shanahan said. “Like I said, it could be some great competition. I really like Brian, what he’s done and how he’s handled himself. I’m sure he’s weighing some options. It’s not too far away from home. Any more I can do?”

The competition Shanahan refers to would come from the running backs already on the roster, Clinton Portis, Larry Johnson and Willie Parker. With all those running backs on the roster, there might not be enough carries to go around, but Shanahan would like to try.

However, Shanahan isn’t sure if Washington is the place Westbrook wants to go. Asked by reporters if he had talked to Westbrook or his agent, Shanahan answered, “No, but if you guys hear anything, just tell him that we’re ready.”

Only because Portis runs like he has an old woman’s legs.

Stockpiling those RB’s. Larry Johnson wont make it out of preseason

Put him in the slot. With a Santana suspension possibly looming we could definitely use him as a WR.

Combined age of running backs if they sign Westbrook: 117
Combined yards the 4 of them will reach before they are all injured: 117

It would be very surprising if Westy went to the skins, if he actually wants to play. If he just wants to collect a paycheck, than the skins would be the way to go. With all the RB traffic there, he’d never see the field.
I’ve watched every carry he has had over the last 3 seasons…… Every one is just a little slower and more timid that the one before it.

Westbrook isn’t playing anywhere this year. I guess that not many people heard what he was saying at the end of last year. He said that he is worried what his life would be like after football if he took another hit. A running back cannot play scared. If he plays, he will be running straight for the sidelines every time he gets the ball. That would be sad to see.

It’s about the money..the Skins lowballed em’ but I’m sure he wants to burn the Igglets twice a year. Come to D.C. baby!!! We’ll appreciate you. Hail!!

The whole Redskins orginazation is terrible. It makes no sense to sign Westbrook and trade for injury prone quaterback Donovan McNabb. It’s going to be Funny to Watch McNabb get injured this year and the Redskins have another losing season. Mike Shanahan is not as good as he thinks he is or what anyone else says. Redskins will be lucky to win 6 games this year in the NFC East.

If Shanahan wins a Superbowl with McNabb and Westbrook, then that tells you what is really the problem in Philadelphia. Using Westbrook as a third down back isn’t a bad idea. I looks like they are going to running the ball 55-65% of the time so I believe that will be an awesome pick up.

I’m a Redskins season ticket holder, and this is one of the funniest (and most perceptive) things written about this franchise under Snyder.

  22. vtsquirm says: Jun 2, 2010 4:54 PM

i cannot fathom what they are trying to do with all these old rbs… can’t they tell from workouts who will fit better in their system? I can’t understand why they want to sign them all. Everyone knows at least 2 of them are going to be cut… They have, what 6 or 7 rbs on the roster now?

Which just goes to show how bad this team really is. Why not just accept your fate, take your 5/6 wins, and pray for next year?

  31. LAEaglefan says: Jun 2, 2010 5:39 PM

In a way it would be fun to watch McNabb and Westbrook team up to terrorize the Eagles twice a year. This is the year that Andy Reid finally gets exposed as the fraud that he is.

OF HIS FAMILY, I HOPE HE CALLS IT A CAREER!
BRIAN WESTBROOK IS A CLASS ACT & GAVE ALL HE HAD TO THE EAGLES AND IN MY OPINION, WAS THE MOST TALENTED RB IN
    THE NFC-EAST.

  33. scorpiodsu says: Jun 2, 2010 5:57 PM

Just about every team goes into every game with 3 active RBs. The issue here though, is if 3 of these guys make the roster, who’s playing special teams? Usually 2nd and 3rd string guys play special teams coverage and none of these guys can play them.

Regarding McNabb and 3500 yards; only over 3500 three times in his career playing for a guy who doesn’t know that you’re allowed to run the ball. So if Moss ends up sitting out a few games, where does the production come from? Thomas and Kelly have been disappointments. You thinking that Joey’s turning the clock back?
    @SATAN567
Westbrook is one or two good shots away from drooling into a cup. Concussions aren’t anything to mess around with.

You have absolutely lost your mind if you seriously think McNabb can get that many yards on THAT team, throwing to THOSE receivers, with nothing but a group of over-the-hill retreads at RB to try and establish a running game.

  37. BigMikeSkinsFan says: Jun 2, 2010 6:51 PM

All of you skins fans, wait and watch. The most impressive carries you see all year will be from Ryan Torain. If the skins get wise and keep him instead of one of their has-beens, that is.

Moss isnt getting suspended..hes not even being investigated. they wanted to talk to him and they even said that was it.
Thomas is going to be a #1 sooner than later. Kelly…he is on the bubble of either breaking out or busting. With Cooley healthy and Davis emerging McNabb has a very good shot at it. And if he has Westbrook back there as well he can easily get 3500.

  41. Big Tex says: Jun 2, 2010 9:37 PM

    @BigMike
Westbrook doesn’t need to be in Washington. Westbrook needs to be on the golf course. Go take a look at what became of Ali, John Mackey, or Mike Webster and then get back to me about repeated head injuries. If Brian keeps playing, it will not end well.

Look what happened to McNabb at the end of the season last year when they didn’t have an 0-line. And as for westbrook, don’t even expect him to play half the season.

  44. We need linemen says: Jun 3, 2010 5:19 AM

With the exception of Portis, none of these RBs have contracts that will cause any long-term cap problems, even if the salaray cap returns next year.
Johnson, Parker and Westbrook aren’t going to be getting much guaranteed money this year. Even if they were I am not sure why anyone but Dan Snyder would have a problem with this. After all it’s only his money being thrown around.
I can’t see anything wrong with getting these guys under contract and giving them an extended test throughout the whole off-season. If one of them gets back to their past form it will be worth it. Cutting them isn’t going to harm the team at all, and the same young street FAs will be waiting around to be signed up as were available when they picked up the vets.
Instead of gambling on youngsters who have never done anything in the league and no one else wanted, they are gambling on vets who have been very effective but have age, durability and and character concerns. At this point they don’t have any choice but to gamble, the veteran route doesn’t seem any worse than scrambling around for hidden gems. Might as well pick up the ones that have lost their lustre and see whether they can be polished up.
If they are all still on the roster by the start of the regular season, and they are all washed up then you can start critcising the front office. Until then you’re criticising them for using the owner’s money. It’s nice of you to show Dan Snyder you care.
As it is, I expect Ryan Torrain will be on the roster on opening day, alongside Portis and Johnson. It will be a short term fix, but it should work for one season.
Westbrook should retire. He was a great player. I think he could probably offer something useful to Washington this year. Though, even if he avoids a concussion, I doubt he makes it through the entire season. However, I’d rather he didn’t get another concussion than have him help the team I follow whilst permanently disabling himself.
