Big Ben will address the media after Thursday's OTA

In a recent edition of PFT Daily, we explained that, at some point, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger needs to talk to the media.  If he doesn’t, he’ll have no chance to ever rebuild his image in Pittsburgh.

Then again, there’s a chance that, if he talks, he’ll make things worse.

Either way, our friends at 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh tell us that Roethlisberger will address the media after Thursday’s offseason practice

It will be critical for him to not read from a prepared text or otherwise adopted the demeanor of a prisoner of war.

Frankly, Jim Joyce provided last night the perfect example that anyone should use when confronting the reality that a mistake was made.  Own it, acknowledge it, apologize for it, make no excuses, and move on.

    Except Jim Joyce isn’t facing a potentially expensive lawsuit(s).
    Yeah he needs to own up and apologize, but he’s also going to have to be very careful in the words he chooses. Given his legal situation he can’t just talk “off-the-cuff” like Joyce did.

    Lol – If only half the owners and all the Steeler Haters in the NFL would use this philosophy! :)

  4. KnuckleBucket says: Jun 3, 2010 12:21 PM

    Ben will address the media….or…….Ben will forcefully undress the female members of the media after thursdays OTA’s.
    I’m just sayin…

  5. timegambit says: Jun 3, 2010 12:22 PM

    I hope he doesn’t get confused and walk out to meet the media the same way he walked out to meet the girls in the hotel room.

    Big Ben will address the media after Thursday’s OTA………..to explain how easy it is to get away with rape.

  8. robert ethen says: Jun 3, 2010 12:31 PM

    The other method is to bring along “the wife” for support.
    Every eye would be focussed on Natural Gerbils and Ruthless would get a free pass.

    Expecting an athlete to speak without a prepared script is like asking one to graduate from college….. We should already know what to expect in the Raper’s speech, words written by a marketing firm, reviewed by a spin doctor and then authorized by his attorneys…..in other words, nothing sincere or contrite, so why waste our time.

    If I were his agent, I’d recommend he leave the Satan T-shirt in the locker room.
    “Hello fans of pittsburgh, I know you aren’t happy with the recent sexual misadventures, but if I know anything about pittsburghers, it is that you’ll ignore any indiscretion if I throw a few really good passes. Watch this! Ohhhh, 60 yards, yea that’s right. You guys let it slide when James Harrison beat up his baby mama, and his pitbulls almost devoured his children, you can let a little sexual assault go, right?”

    I did not have sexual relations with that……those women.

    He can’t admit anything but his judgement was wrong.

    This site sucks, I cant come here to discuss anything Steelers anymore because the comment threads are full of awful Roethlisberger jokes.

    Well, duh. If Rapistberger stops (allegedly) raping people, I’m sure the jokes will stop.
    …then, Stillerz wrote:

    On noes! Yeah, I’m sure Florio will censor the site just so your poor widdle eyes don’t have to read anything negative about the Stillerz. I’m sure Florio is shaking in his boots over “losing fans” when every post about Pig Ben gets 100 or more comments. If *every* last Stillerz fan stopped logging on or posting here, I doubt anyone would notice the difference.
    “Leave Britney… er, I mean Ben- alone! Waahh!”

    Please for the love of God, don’t say a damn thing. Just practice with your team mates and close mouth there is nothing else left for you to say.

  22. Deb says: Jun 3, 2010 1:31 PM

    With a civil suit pending, Ben should be wary of taking questions or doing much off-the-cuff talking. You should know that, Mike. But his first statement regarding his incredibly poor judgment and bad behavior was not well-orchestrated. Perhaps this one be more relaxed … and even seem genuine.

  23. beretta96 says: Jun 3, 2010 1:33 PM

    Give your heads a shake, what do you think he’ll say? He can’t fess up, take ownership or any other BS that will incriminate him any further.
    He’ll say nice things about practice and blah, blah blah, fan support, blah blah blah and team support blah blah blah.
    Then life goes on. Welcome to north america where the wealthy and popular get a free pass. That’s the way it is.

    I agree with the part about reading a prepared speech. Not just Roethlisberger, but anybody that’s simply looking down and reading words off a piece of paper, sounding as if they’ve never once seen those words previously, they come across as less believable to me – and may have been better off not saying anything at all.
    In order to come across as sincere, he needs to have been practicing his answers to probable questions with his agent, lawyer, and front office personnel for the last two weeks. Otherwise there’s the potential for a big mistake: at minimum to the rehab of his image that he is trying to rebuild, and at worst words or even demeanor that could either cause his suspension to go beyond four games – or, as mentioned above, be used in a civil lawsuit.

  28. Deb says: Jun 3, 2010 2:26 PM

    @Stillerz …
    Anyone attacking you personally? ‘Cause I’ve taken pornographic personal attacks and been called every filthy name possible. My rape experience and cancer history have been ridiculed by apes who’d have dropped dead if they’d lived those nightmares. I’m a rape victim constantly harassed as defending a “sexual predator.” People I thought were decent–including some Steelers fans–have shredded me. And I’m not going anywhere. But male Steelers fans have been “scared away” because “the comment threads are full of awful Roethlisberger jokes.” Really? How many years have Steelers fans been making awful “Ray the Murderer” jokes? Come on.
    Are you really saying Steelers fans are so thin-skinned they can’t take the blog equivalent of bathroom graffiti? No one’s suggesting you spend hours researching and arguing the case evidence like I have–that’s something I’ve been driven to do because of my life experience. But at least you guys can man up, take the heat, and keep posting intelligent football comments despite the children slinging a little mud around the playground.

  29. AllThat says: Jun 3, 2010 2:43 PM

    Good post Deb………….I would have started at the “Ray the Murderer) jokes though…you may get blasted again for the stuff above it… :)

    i think i have to shoot my face off. i actually agreed with deb. when it comes down to it, if you’re scared out of a website you read because of other people’s thoughts, you might as well go move into a shack in the woods by yourself. just don’t start mailing people pipe bombs.

  32. HC says: Jun 3, 2010 3:39 PM

    Excellent response and suggestion Deb.
    Though I still do have to say it’s highly ironic that other Steeler fans are complaining that fans of other teams are over running the comment section on articles about their team or a player on their team.

  33. Deb says: Jun 3, 2010 4:30 PM

    @AllThat …
    ROFL … yeah, I know, couldn’t help myself. badthings is beating his head against the keyboard.
    @ArtModellsPimp …
    Well … he didn’t rape anyone. But yes I’d love to drag him by the ear to a chair, plop him down, and make some suggestions, punctuated by a few kicks to the shin :)
    Incidentally, I don’t look anything like someone who’d be giving man lessons. Didn’t say no one’s made me cry. But no one’s made me run.

  34. badthings says: Jun 3, 2010 4:46 PM

    Art, just keep walking and don’t make eye contact…

  35. trickbunny says: Jun 3, 2010 5:38 PM

    Is “Deb” short for “Debbie Downer”, by any chance?
    How many times do you need to remind everyone you’re a rape victim and cancer survivor? While, on a personal level, I think it’s a great thing you’ve made it through those things, your constantly reposting it on a football website reeks of attention-seeking.
    And how f’d up is it that a rape survivor constantly defends someone who is time and time again is accused of sexual assualt?
    c-r-e-e-p-y.

  36. badthings says: Jun 3, 2010 6:36 PM

    Like I said, here we go again……………

  37. Deb says: Jun 3, 2010 7:20 PM

    @trickbunny …
    When these cases broke, I researched them for my own peace of mind. Expected to find he did it. After discovering he didn’t, felt compelled to counter the false info. Then some woman started ranting that I was betraying women by defending a rapist. So I blurted out a history I never discuss offline and fervently wish I’d kept to myself. Guess I keep mentioning it in a stubbornly futile attempt to say, “Do you really REALLY think I’d defend this jerk if I thought there was a snowball’s chance in hell he raped someone?” But you morons are too simple-minded to wrap your heads around that. He’s a jackass and if it were just him, I’d probably leave him to twist in the wind. But staying silent also means letting women who’ve fabricated rape stories be portayed as victims–and I have a hard time with that.
    Attention seeking? Would you want to be known for being raped? I do have other accomplishments, thanks. And when it comes to PFT, I preferred being known for my football knowledge than my defense of a jackass.
