Colts receiver Reggie Wayne would like to keep his holdout from mandatory minicamp professional:
“I have tremendous respect for Jim Irsay, Bill Polian and the entire Indianapolis Colts organization, but at this time, we are in disagreement concerning my contract situation,” Wayne said in a statement sent to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. “Therefore, I will not be attending this weekend’s minicamp.”
Wayne misses voluntary practices annually, so he’s used to getting ready for the season on his own.
“I will continue training diligently in Florida, as I have each offseason since my rookie year, to ensure that I am fully ready for this season,” he said. “I hope that a fair resolution can be reached in the not-too-distant future that allows me to achieve my goal of playing my entire career with the Indianapolis Colts.”
Well, that was polite. (And an excellent statement as statements go.)
Skipping minicamp sends a clear message to the Colts. The Colts can fine Wayne, but it’s only three days. A training camp holdout would be far more worrisome for the organization.
