irishsamurai , sigh, Wayne’s agent wrote that statement. It’s called PR spin to fool the public into thinking he’s the good guy.
Not saying this is the case of Wayne, but did you ever notice how athletes can barely speak, use proper English or use Ebonics in conjugating verbs and then in their “statement”, suddenly all the verbs are properly conjugated and the statement is very very neutral? That’s called PR (Public Relations).

catsville hit the nail on the head. This isn’t the real world — it’s football. Contracts are structured to where nothing is guaranteed EXCEPT guaranteed money (the big buzzword players go after). Other than the guaranteed money, the rest of the contract is only valid as long as both sides think the contract is ‘fair’. If the player underperforms, he gets cut and no longer has a job. If he overperforms, he holds out and demands more money.
But wait, it sort of is like real life. Say you’re working a corporate job trying to work up the ladder. Now lets say you keep forgetting to put your cover sheets on your TPS reports and underperform big time… that’s when they fire your ass, contract or not. (sort of like firing with cause) On the other hand, say you’re a incredible employee who’s raking in the dollars head and shoulders above everyone else. Said employee now has tons of leverage and can demand a promotion because the organization knows that if they don’t put out the $$, someone else gladly will.
Basic economics. Supply/demand. If you supply, you can demand.

3/2/2006: Signed a six-year, $39.5 million contract. The deal included a $12.5 million signing bonus. 2010: $5.47 million
2011: $5.95 million
2012: Free Agent
Remember this? This is your signature, right? Help me to understand where the “disagreement” is, could you please?

A question for those of you who take the player’s side and mention teams being able to cut them. Is it not in their contract that they receive a specific amount of guaranteed money regardless of what happens? If a player signs a contract guaranteeing 30 mil but is (not realistically) cut during the 2nd season, they will STILL RECEIVE THAT MONEY! Heck most of that comes as a big signing bonus nowadays.
If only I could get my boss to give me a million dollar bonus before I start work. Then have him immediately fire me so I can not work the next few years while still collecting paychecks from the company. You all are right, these players do have it bad. Sometimes it’s better to not say anything instead of making dumbass observations and looking stupid.
These players can suck it and this is why the NFL will always look better than the NFLPA.

The Colts made him the 3rd highest paid receiver in the game when he wasn’t even a top 5 receiver. If he doesn’t like his contract, he shouldn’t have taken the security of a big signing bonus and signed only a 3 year deal. This is getting old. These dumbass players act like the signing bonus is just free money.

Hey all you “it’s a contract, what’s wrong with this country” people. If Reggie Wayne doesn’t play as well as the Colts would like this year, they’ll cut him. They won’t care that THEY signed a contract with HIM. They’ll just cut his ass. This is football, not a typical contract between a typical employer. This is SPORTS, a whole different beast. Quit acting like either side has ANY loyalty in this game. They don’t. Get over it. This whole crying about ethics and morals is a joke. Both sides are money grabbing whores. It just depends on if the player is young enough, or healthy enough, to perform up to his contract. When he’s not, bye bye. If he has leverage, he uses it.

Gauranteed Contracts would be awesome. Lets say a player signs a contract. The team has to pay him that much long as he does his part by being there and cant cut him if he gets hurt. A Player could be sued if he didnt hold up his part of the bargain. put that with the rookie scale. take care of the retiree’s and share a little of the profits and a new CBA is born.

They should make the fines more $. The freakin guy is under contract. If he didn’t like the terms of the deal, he shouldn’t have signed the contract.
there are two kinds of contracts in the NFL.. Front loaded and back loaded. Front loaded contracts have the players holding out in the latter years, and back loaded contracts have teams cutting players in the latter years.. Personally, I’d take most of my money in the beginning.. Anyone who signs a contract that pays them more in the final year of the contract usually aren’t around to see it (or get restructured extension).

Wayne is insane. When he signed his original deal people thought it was too much money for him. The Colts treated him very well. You can’t sign huge deal and play out the big money years then demand a new deal, that isn’t how it works.
