Broncos release Tom Brandstater

Early this offseason, there was a short-lived school of thought in Denver that 2009 sixth-round pick Tom Brandstater had a shot to the Broncos’ quarterback of the future.

That school closed after the team acquired Brady Quinn and Tim Tebow, then was knocked down Friday when the Broncos released Brandstater, according to multiple reports in Denver.

It’s still a surprising move.  By dumping Brandstater now, Josh McDaniels announces that he has no hope the player can help him, even as a practice squad candidate.

  1. That Bill Bellicheck – he sure has found some gems since Pioli and Dmitroff have left the Patriots organization.
    Another swing and a miss.

  2. Giving the guy an opportunity to catch on elsewhere early. QB needs a lot of time to deal with a new playbook. He can always come back if nothing works out for him.

  3. I think this guy has the tools to be solid. The Pats should dump Mike Teel who they just picked up for him. And I still don’t know what the Colts are thinking with Curtis shoulda been a Painter as their backup. This guy has to be better than him.

  4. duh…even Brandstater’s parents knew he was getting cut when they drafted TEBOW!

  5. wow mcdaniels is pathetic. Brandstater is the only QB on the roster who actually had a shot of becoming a true NFL QB.

  6. He’ll catch on somewhere. He’s a big, tall kid that has a pretty strong arm, but he’s raw and he’ll need some time to develop.

  7. News from 2012: Early this offseason, there was a short-lived school of thought in Denver that 2010 first-round pick Tim Tebow had a shot to the Broncos’ quarterback of the future.
That school was knocked down Friday when the Broncos’ new head coach released Tebow, according to multiple reports in Denver.

  8. Umm..gregjennings85…you do know Bill Belichick does not coach the Broncos and did not draft Brandstter. 80 percents of posts in the comments section mention the Pats and tend to be uneducated or unoriginal. Good luck at life.

  9. What did you think was gonna happen? You cant compete with Baby Jesus!!!! Brandstater did this to himself when he lost the Terry Bradshaw haircut.

  10. They did him a huge favor by cuting him now and having a shot at being able to be picked up by another team now with a great shot at learning thier playbook prior to the start of the pre-season.

I dont get it, is this a joke??? Can anyone help me figure out how Bill Belichick has anything to do with former Offensive Coordinator Josh McDaniels’ draft picks/roster moves?

  12. does dumping brandstater show a lack of faith in Tebow to start this year? Otherwise, wouldn’t it have been better to trade orton?

  13. Coach Mchoodie is the biggest diot!! Broncos are the new Raiders of old….. yes, the Raiders will have a better recod this year than the doncos!

  14. Strange move considering McHoody jr. loved this guy’s prospects last year as a rookie.

I’m a moron, plain and simple. I confused Brandstater with O’Connell.
    Apologies.

Which NFL team do you work for? Scouting? Coaching? You really seem to have the inside scoop. Interesting, though, that Brandstater was a sixth round pick that has never played a regular season down. Every single team passed on him multiple times.
Or maybe you don’t know shite and just will hate on everything McDaniels does, no matter what. Not uncommon, but getting pretty damn old.

You are a year too late with that one too, O’Connell, drafted by the Pats while Pioli was in the front office, was released prior to last season, and now plays for the Jets…..I believe Rex Ryan used him a team captain against the Pats, because that was supposed to ruffle their feathers or something???? lol, but O’Connell was a miss….

  18. Arm strength matters little when your offensive philosophy is “bubble screen left, bubble screen right, run for loss, punt.”

  19. I hope this kid catches on somewhere…… I really think he has the tools/talent to becaome a solid NFL QB

So…..Getting rid of last years 3rd string QB makes them worse than the laughing stock of the NFL? Hmmm…..

  21. Patriots… please go get Brandstater. I know some might wonder why, but coming out, he seemed like the perfect backup QB for the Patriots. Some even compared him to Tom Brady (granted no one meant that he would become Tom Brady in the NFL)…

Assuming you are a Bronco fan I truly feel sorry for you. Mcdaniels is worse than Mangina. He has the personality of a serial killer and chases away all of your teams talent including Nolan which was the one bright spot on your team last year. Be honest with yourself. Tebow will never be an NFL QB, neither will Quinn and Orton will never get you into the playoffs. Brandstater was at least a prototypical QB with arm strength who one day could become something.

  24. Last I checked, the Broncos still have Clady, Bailey, Dumervil, Williams, Dawkins, and a bevy of young players with potential. You don’t know about Tebow. Nobody does. But I’ll tell ya this…I trust McDaniels’ opinion over yours. And if Nolan was so great, how come they finished 2-8 last year? If Cutler was so great, how come he stunk it up so badly in Chicago last year? Marshall is a great receiver, but no WR is worth $50 mill. Ever. The Broncos were never gonna pay him that (and any team that does is foolish). Be honest with yourself, you don’t know shit from shine-ola. You just hate McDaniels (or the Broncos, or whatever). Don’t feel sorry for me, I think the Broncos are on the way up. I guess it’ll be fun seeing who’s wrong. I think its you.

Yes, you’re really plugged in to what happens around here in Denver. Good one, genius.

  26. since you all have crystal balls, how bout some lottery numbers?
or how come you know it alls aren’t NFL talent scouts? Happier at the copy machine?

  27. Yeah, why not have confidence in an offensive coach that got rid of your franchise QB and your best receiver. That turned an offense that was 2nd in yards per game to nr 15. He turned the 3rd ranked pass offense to nr 13 and their running yards per game dropped from 12th in the league to 18th.
23.1 points per game to 20.4.
And he went 8-8 because the NFL figured out that Orton can’t throw a pass further than 20 yards down the field so they could put everyone in the box
