Shiancoe says Sharper Twitter feud isn't serious

Over the past couple of weeks, a Twitter war has developed between Saints safety Darren Sharper and Vikings tight end Visanthe Shiancoe.

The barbs progressed to a point at which Vikings coach Brad Childress said that, at some point, he would “reel it in.”

Shiancoe now claims there’s no need to defuse the situation, telling the St. Paul Pioneer Press that the whole thing has been a joke.

Per Shiancoe, he has spoken to Sharper, who “isn’t mad at all” about the back-and-forth.  “I can’t believe that anyone is falling for his nonsense,” Shiancoe said.

It could be that Shiancoe and Sharper have decided to reel it in on their own, characterizing after the fact as jokes comments that weren’t made in jest at the time.  Indeed, there’s nothing about any of the comments that indicate an obvious undercurrent of humor.  If anything, the words oozed animosity and hostility.

The best indicator as to whether it was a big joke will come in the future.  If it’s all been done in good fun, then it should continue.  We have a feeling it won’t — which would tend to suggest that it’s being painted as fun and games after the tweet hit the fan.

It’s just a good thing we have Florio to tell us about whether or not Visanthe Shiancoe and Darren Sharper are joking, because obviously he knows all about it.

  7. Real Vikings fans wouldn't cheer for Favre says: Jun 4, 2010 9:17 AM

I doubt “X marks the spot” was a joke after what happened last time.
I don’t mean Favre throwing across his body and single-handedly costing that team a trip the Super Bowl.
I mean the perfectly clean hits the Saints put on Favre that make Vikings fans cry. Aggression wins in this game. This isn’t Detroit, man.

    Yep, Bun, you’re right……………
….who the hell even reads Twitter?? what a stupid form of communication…………
…typical Florio trying to stir the pot on a nonexistant issue………,”hey, did you guys hear what so-and-so said about so-and-so???” “NO WAY, you guys!!!!”

only a few hundred million which counts as free exposure for professional athletes, some which take all the way to the bank…however I must digress, these two dudes should be focusing on OTA’s or laying atop a lightskinned groupie instead of wasting the thumb power.

Once again….Florio shows his ignorance to the Black culture……Sad because too many people take his ‘thoughts’ as the bible….Football Bible, New Testament Version.
Are any of these other bloggers Black? Because he may need one to check Florio from time to time….Just saying….

Twitter is stupid. I dont care what Shiancoe or any of these other guys are thinking about at any given moment. I care about two things from an offensive player. I care if hes healthy, and I care if he can catch the ball when thrown to him. Other than that, I have no interest in an athletes thoughts, what hes doing at noon on Saturday, or how he feels about the BP oil spill. Meaningless. If the players want to trash talk one another over it then so be it. If you continue to give them attention then its going to get annoying to the point where we will be reading about nonsense like Peyton Manning’s thoughts on what his wife made for dinner last night

Just because you don’t think something is funny, that doesn’t mean the person saying it wasn’t trying to be funny. Take, for example, a great majority of your attempts at humor on this web site.
My point is- you don’t know these two guys and have no way of knowing what their relationship is and how they talk to each other. Any conclusion you draw is simply a product of your thirst for controversy.
When I read the tweets between Sharper and Shiancoe, I don’t think they are funny either. The difference between you and I is that I don’t assume that means they weren’t meant to be.

long ago, when the original “X marks the spot” thing came out, Shiancoe referred to Sharper as his boy and explained it was all a joke.
it was in some Minneapolis or St Paul newspaper.
Mike Florio neglected to mention the whole story and cherry picked his quotes.

  22. purpleguy says: Jun 4, 2010 10:42 AM

  24. sand0 says: Jun 4, 2010 11:43 AM

Thanks purpleguy. That was funny. It would appear that Shank also doesn’t equate Sharper to Osama and want to shoot him to death with an M16 or whatever that part was about.
I knew Sharper was joking when he threatened to lay a big hit on Shank. Sharper is a good safety but one of the softest hitters in this league.

Thank you. Exactly. I’ve never been on twitter nor do I ever plan to be on twitter. I really have no interest in checking my email, or getting a text message or however they notify you that someone you’re subscribed to has “tweeted” and seeing “N E Drs out there no if green #2 iz bad??? Hold up, Buttercup! If you had seen any interviews pertaining to this, you would know that it had been in jest. Reading content tends to lose the meaning behind it. Especially when people(media) misdirect it and twist it. You don’t see smiles or laughter in print, unless you/they make the ‘emotion-cons’. Stating that if they don’t say anything else about it makes them guilty will just make you more wrong. If they stop, it’ll be because they are bored with it even though you are not. Feel free to make up a scandle between two people who are known to be good friends–it is how you make your money. It’s worked well so far.

The joke’s on all of us, Florio.
It’s been obvious from the beginning both men were joking — if not from the content itself and the context of their well-known friendship, then from Shiancoe stating as much repeatedly from the beginning.
But you knew you could drive more traffic by selecting presenting this story and playing off the animosity among some Saints and Vikings fans.
Why even bother at this point trying to act like you still doubt they were joking? You’ve generated the traffic you wanted and will continue to do so even if you admit they were joking all along.
It could be that (Florio has) decided to (blow this story up out of proportion) on (his) own, characterizing after the fact as (sincere threats) comments that (were clearly) made in jest at the time. Indeed, there’s nothing about any of the (posts) that indicate an obvious undercurrent of (honesty or objectivity). If anything, the (posts) oozed animosity and hostility (and a lack of integrity).
