Daunte Culpepper officially joins the UFL

With no NFL opportunities available, veteran quarterback Daunte Culpepper officially has jumped to the upstart UFL.

The league announced today that Culpepper will reunite with coach Dennis Green and join the Sacramento Mountain Lions.

Green coached the team last year; it was based in San Fran and called the California Redwoods.

“My goal for this year was to get on the field and play football,” Culpepper said. “When the opportunity came for me to sign with the UFL and play for coach Green in Sacramento I could not resist. I am impressed with his approach to the game and to his players.

“I am also excited to be reunited with my college coach Mike Kruczek as the offensive coordinator. I am expecting to have a lot of fun running a wide-open offense and being a part of the United Football League. California here I come!”

Last year, former Bills quarterback J.P. Losman joined the UFL. He later was signed by the Raiders, after the UFL season ended.

Culpepper compiled one of the best quarterback seasons in league history with the 2004 Vikings. He suffered three torn knee ligaments the following year, and he has struggled to regain the form he displayed earlier in his career.

For those of you inclined to knock the UFL, keep this in mind: It might be all we have in 2011.
