Ravens looking at veteran help in the secondary

The Ravens might have one less week of organized team activities than originally planned, but that’s not stopping them from looking for a little more veteran help for their secondary.

The team held auditions for a trio of well-seasoned defensive backs at their training facility on Wednesday. Safety Ken Hamlin was joined by cornerbacks Walt Harris and Ken Lucas at the tryout, according to Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times, with none of the three doing enough to merit an immediate signing.

The Ravens’ interest is likely based on their need for some insurance in the defensive backfield, even with safety Dawan Landry signing his free agent tender on Tuesday.

Ed Reed is recovering from offseason hip surgery and cornerbacks Fabian Washington and Lardarius Webb are both rehabbing torn ACLs that brought their 2009 seasons to an early end. All are expected back for the 2010 season but it’s probably wise that the Ravens apprise themselves of the options in case things don’t work out in their favor.

Hamlin started 12 games for the Cowboys last season, his seventh in the NFL, and was released in April. Harris started all 16 games for the 49ers in 2008 but missed the 2009 season after tearing his ACL during OTAs last spring and Lucas spent 2009 serving primarily as a backup with the Seahawks.
