Big Ben's refusal to quit drinking could be a big mistake

Earlier this week, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger began the long, difficult process of reconnecting with Pittsburgh fans by making one important but unexpected step — giving access to the Pittsburgh media.  Closer review of the contents of Roethlisberger’s interview illustrates the risk of talking publicly prior to the league office’s proclamation of final judgment as to whether his six-game suspension will be reduced, or expanded.

Specifically, after everything he has endured over the past year, Roethlisberger is not yet prepared to swear off drinking alcohol.

“Moving forward you have to make sure you make right decisions, and that
right decision is going to have to be something I’ll have to make when
the situation presents itself, how the situation presents itself,” Roethlisberger said during his recent interview.  “You
can’t stop living, but you gotta live smarter.”

Though we’re not privy to the specific restrictions that the league has placed on Roethlisberger, it’s fairly safe to assume that the NFL hasn’t issued a “thou shalt not” mandate regarding beer and other boozes.  (Then again, that would require an assumption that Roethlisberger isn’t a complete and total idiot, an assumption that many may not regard as safe.)

Even if the league has imposed no alcohol ban on Big Ben, he can’t dispute that he has shown bad judgment, or that alcohol impairs judgment — especially the ability to judge whether or not more alcohol should be consumed.  So why would he entrust himself to “make right decisions” after drinking something that tends to impede that process?

If he truly intends to make a commitment to steer clear of any and all trouble, he’d avoid consuming anything that could lead him directly toward it.  The fact that he doesn’t get that makes us wonder whether he still doesn’t “get it.”

He’ll never get it. He’s a little child that still has not grown up to value the really important things in life. Stupid and Roethlisberger are on in the same.
He’s always been a loser, is a loser, and probably will always be a loser.

Honestly, it probably is only a matter of time before something happens again. He has a long history of obnoxious behavior dating back to his college days in Oxford, Ohio.
I don’t buy the “I was young defense” because he is in his late 20s. And we heard similar things from him after the motorcycle accident, after the first Nevada case, etc.
I hope for his benefit he changes…but all this sounds like the work of his PR firm he hired to change the “illusion” of his behavior.

    Who cares?
All I care about is how he performs on the field! Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb were no angels.
He can do WHATEVER he wants as long as it NO LONGER has anything to do with the Steelers winning. If he gets suspended again cut him and move on.
We’ll decide on a persons legacy over an entire career not just a young “single” guy that was just looking for some fun that night who made MANY – MANY bad decisions.
Give the guy a chance to redeem himself over a long period of time and see what happens.
I’ll give him a “pass” this time because the NFL had to punish him or it would have been a riot if they did not. He was NEVER convicted of ANYTHING… was he?
The accuser wearing a DTF button? I am sure this is not her “first time in the bathroom”or charges would have been filed.
Is it fair that her name not be put out to the public also instead of just the person accused.
Another example of our legal system where a person can bring suit on a company or another person and a company or person having to settle to reduce legal costs even if there is no case.
If they lose they should have to pay the other persons legal fees or maybe in this case have her name EXPOSED.
It looks like a set up because the first game is against her hometown DTF Falcons!
    Go Steelers!!!

While it may cost him, he is right. People need to learn to live a balanced, moderate life. Swearing off this and that only sets you up to feel like a failure when you succumb to the trapping of ordinary life. No one likes a quitter. Make no mistake, I think this guy is a total douche. Learning self control is whole lot more important that “punishing” yourself by swearing off something all together to try to prove your worth to others. That sh*t is for the idiots and religious folks. Be a grown up and set limits for yourself.

I’ve said it before, and will say it again. You stated in the post that it was “unexpected” he granted access to the media. THIS IS EXACTLY WHY. Because little hoes like Florio want to decifer his words like they’re cracking the Rosetta Stone. If I were famous, I wouldn’t take to any of you asshole pretend journalists’ with a keyboard. You could hate me if you want, but at least I wouldn’t be misunderstood……………
I’m a die-hard Browns fan, that hates the Steelers, and really hates Roethlisberger. That is stated to give you readers SOME CONTEXT as to how much I hate Florio and his Gossip Girls writing style and what it’s evolved into since its purchase.

She wasn’t raped, she banged him out and then regretted it and tried to get something out of it. Hence no charges were filed. Hence why he got 6 game suspension instead of behind bars.

You honestly believe he’s a HOFer? In his first super bowl appearance, he had the worst performance of any QB to win. They needed Randle El to throw their only TD pass, and they needed the refs to rule he crossed the goalline when he didn’t.
In his second, he was excellent. This amounts to a HOF career? Dude is 28 and just got suspended for assaulting a girl in a bathroom. There is a high probability to just watched his career die, even if it’s a slow death. If he never plays at a pro bowl level again, he won’t even receive consideration for the HOF.

This may seem like a foreign concept to you but the Super Bowl is a GAME. Ben Rapistburger is a loser where it counts: A LOSER AT LIFE.
He could win every single GAME he plays for the rest of his career and he would STILL be a LOSER at what’s important: being a human being. He sucks at human. That ape who knew a little sign language was more human than this piece of crap.

Funny thing is, there are only maybe 8 teams in the league whose fans wouldn’t want Ben on their team instead of their current starting QB. When given a choice between wins and saintly behavior, NFL fans choose wins. I mean, it doesn’t seem to bother Jets fans that their current QB (Sanchez) was arrested for rape or that their oldtime hero (Namath) is a drunk.

  58. bobinpuertorico says: Jun 12, 2010 11:08 AM

Goodell blew it big time by only giving Rapistberger a six game suspension. If he reduces it to four games for any reason, he will be telling women that the NFL considers rape to be nothing more than a “boys will be boys” occurence. If his slap on the wrist punishment of Ben the Raper hasn’t already caused the NFL to no longer be family entertainment, reducing the suspension to four games will signal women and families to stay away.

Drinking isn’t necessarily his problem. It merely exacerbates his real core problems, which are narcissism, misogyny, and immaturity. If he can work on getting those under control, there is no reason he shouldn’t be able to drink moderately.
He could quit drinking entirely, but if he doesn’t resolve his issues with thinking the rules don’t apply to him, with thinking that women are second class citizens, and that he can still excuse his behavior by saying he’s “still young”, trouble will continue to follow him.

Whats better to post when its a slow news day . A
Steelers story . Even more than that a Big Ben story . Nothing is easier to do when you want to generate a heavy commented post . From the Steeler fans , Steeler haters , etc .
Seems to me if the league isnt requiring Ben not to drink then they feel and he feels its clearly not a problem . If it was a problem then clearly the league would have him in an alcohol and drug program . Not really a big story . But it could become one .
Long as Florio and the Steeler haters feel its a problem then it will continue to be reported on . Hey Florio how about giving me a free copy of your new magazine ? Im running short on Charmin in the house .

If I may, what I do know is that Ben’s behavior is insane culminated by his choice to drink alcohol in excess, some of his behavior reminds me of myself (not the sexual predatory practices) but the insane behavior one would only participate in as a drunk, which is what he is. He needs to accept he is a drunk, get into a rehab and then attend 90 AA meetings in 90 days. This is a program that truly works for drunks; me and millions of others have made a better life through AA, I hope he chooses this path but only he can make the choice.

When I was 18 I could drink legally (yeah, I’m old). Now that I’m 50, can look back on 32 years of drinking and while I have sent more than one prayer to the porcelain god RALPH, I’ve never had a DUI, I’ve never raped a woman, I’ve never been jailed for starting a fight, shot myself with a pistol or made any of a whole host of potentially moronic decisions. Many of which Rapelisburger, and these other spoiled children of the NFL, have done.

Shouldnt he be on the federal sex offenders list?
    ———————————————–
    Yessirree!!!
The list was created to protect us from predators. So let’s include Roethlisberger even though the medical exam refuted Georgia, and Nevada told everyone screwing Ben was the thrill of her life.
Guess who else is on the national list?
    * College kids caught peeing in alleys.
    * 18-year-olds caught having consensual sex with 16-year-old girlfriends.
    * Men who sent photos of their junk to a girlfriend that accidentally got forwarded to her address book.
    Feel safer?
Meanwhile, California authorities recently found two teenagers raped and murdered by a registered sex offender out on parole. He was able to roam freely because the system had lost track of him. Wonder why.
For God’s sake, people, grow up.
And Connie, Ben may be a jackass, but please don’t play the bright shining beacon of morality. You’ve chosen to ignore the investigative evidence in a rape case because it doesn’t match your football leanings. By doing so, you’re championing women who’ve lied about sexual assault. Boys will be boys, but YOU are a woman betraying REAL rape victims over something stupid and trivial. Yeah, your home produced a real winner.

He is very lucky to have another chance… many others of us who aren’t NFL quarterbacks playing for one of the NFL’s favorite teams aren’t nearly as fortunate.

Also, I like how “YourJealousofSix” has made his user name with the wrong form of the word. It would be “You’reJealousofSix.” However, I definitely see how someone who would choose that would have no clue how to correctly state that.

So you realize Ben didn’t rape anyone but NEXT TIME, he’ll go through with it and Steelers fans will call the next two women whores. I haven’t called anyone a whore; have just tried to be adult honestly examining the evidence. Maybe the details of my own rape are burned so deeply into my mind that the humor of the situation just escapes me.
Sorry to disappoint, but since the guy has never attempted to rape anyone, he’s not going to “actually go through with it” one day–much as you’re wishing for two women to be raped. But don’t worry. While you’ve been salivating over this nonstory, many real rapists have been preying on many real victims. May God forgive me, but I hope one day you get a firsthand taste of how it feels to be that powerless. Then maybe you won’t find rape such a joyful and entertaining subject.

    @ deb
Are you being serious right now? I don’t know if I should be angry or just laugh and accept my opinons on the fatso to be misunderstood. Never have I ever said anything about raping women to be fun. I was merely saying debating the situation with informed individuals like yourself is fun. You argue your facts I argue my utter hatred for the guy and the fact that there is a chance that he may have gotten away with something. I have never, nor have I ever endorsed or made light of the actual crime of rape, but merely the fact that your QB seems to put him in bad situations. At a minimum I have made fun of his ability to put himself into situations where he can be guilty of some type of sexual crime rather it be as simple as indecent exposure or assault. In fact I think it has been quite some time since I referred to him as “Rapistberger” which I admit to doing initially.
While I understand that you go back and forth with some ignorant scumbags on here please do not lump me into that group. I am simply pointing out that he puts himself in terrible situations where if a case were to go civil, a jury or a judge may find him guilty where the burden of guilt is far less. Please do not mistake my position, or opinions as taking the ultimate crime lightly.
Seeing as how I even made fun of myself for peeing in an alley and as a result being put on the sexual offenders list, I thought it was quite clear where I stand. Please, for the sake of argument once the season starts and we can argue the “on the field actions” don’t lump me into a crowd where I don’t belong.

As a rape survivor, my ONLY concern is Ben’s criminal liability. So I’ve reviewed every witness statement, police report, medical finding, civil complaint, and statement by authorities in both cases. The evidence overwhelmingly supports his innocence.
I’m a white Southern girl who thinks Tomlin’s the hottest guy on the team and loves Woodson beyond reason. I’ve honestly never thought about the Steelers’ racial makeup. Who cares? When you want a guy to be guilty of a sex crime just because he’s white–even though the evidence shows he’s innocent–you need to worry less about the wants of your “Steeler brethren” and more about the content of your own character.

Roethlisberger is a moron. However, he has never had a DUI, never raped a woman, never been arrested, charged, or jailed for any reason, and never shot himself with a pistol.
AND as far as we know, he’s never come onto a public forum without having read a single police report, medical exam, witness statement … or without having listening to a single statement by the authorities … and declared another man a rapist even though the medical evidence proved no intercourse occurred and the investigating authorities declared no crime was committed.

    ********************
Let’s see. Well your first paragraph is just a personal attack upon myself, so there’s nothing but chest thumping there.
Your second paragraph is filled with a couple other personal attacks but also some misguided assumptions. One assumption is that I’m a fan of a team other than the Steelers. I actually have season tickets to Heinz Field. You say it “goes to show the only thing some care about in their miserable lives is their football team and how much they hate the Steelers.” What does it say when someone, such as yourself, vehemently and uncontrollably has to defend your favorite QB to a bunch of internet “haters”? Someone who has been the biggest douchebag Pittsburgh has ever seen? I’m not jealous or ignorant to anything. Just like to live in reality.
Your third paragraph FINALLY gets to what I think it was you were trying to get at. I speak for many people, possibly the majority, when I say that Rape is just as bad, if not worse, than murder. And the fact that both Joran van der Sloot and Ben Roethlisberger were accused of such acts once, only to commit THE SAME ATROCITIES a second time, is a sad reflection of the justice systems in question. They are both serial in nature to their violent crimes. They need to do these things, for the thrill it seems. It satiates them. Playing with people lives like only theirs matter. It’s disgusting.
So I guess this will give me SOME credibility. Although I didn’t know people had to go to you for credibility handouts. I’ll be there 10/17/10, with my friends and family as we boo this mongrel out of town.

The league shouln’t ban anyone for using alcohol. Ben doesn’t need to quit alcohol. He needs to quit making stupid mistakes. It is his responsibility to make the decisions in his life to steer himself in the right direction. If alcohol is a contributor to his poor decision making then its up to him to choose the time and place to consume so he doesnt put himself in a situation that could end badly. Alcohol alone doesnt make good people do bad things. Bad people use alcolol as their excuse for doing bad things. It’s Ben’s responsibility, it’s up to him to control himself. If he continues to drink and his drinking causes poor judgement that again may put someone else at risk or look badly upon the league then he should be held accountable. If the league believes that he has a drinking problem then they should require that he seek apropriate counsel to help him. Banning him from drinking alcohol would solve nothing. I do enjoy a drink. Never in my life have I done anything that I could blame on alcohol. Drunk or not, I made all of my decisions, not the alcohol.

Maybe Ben should go to Passages Addition Cure in Malibu? It’s only $70,000.00/month. All joking aside, if drinking has been a familial issue in a multi -generational sense maybe there is be a genetic predisposition to alcoholism. Following that train of thought the biggest problem for practicing alcoholics is denial.
But I digress, Ben may be someone who can handle his liquor, no pun intended, in a responsible manner? It’s just that alcohol can help you do things you wouldn’t normally do. We’ll just have to wait and see.
    GO STEELERS!

“Bad people use alcohol as their excuse for doing bad things.”
WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. There are people in this world who cannot handle alcohol. The kind of people where 1 drink is too many and 100 isn’t enough. Make your way to an AA meeting sometime and meet a few of them. I know several who have over 15 years of sobriety.

    @Richm2256 …
I have no idea where this latest personal attack, steeped in ignorance, is coming from … other than your usual sad, sick obsession with football fans that denigrated the Patriots during Spygate. Never mind that I wasn’t one of those fans. You just continue to take out your infantile rants on me.
If you’ll go back through this thread and every other on the subject, you’ll find my ONLY argument with regard to Ben Roethlisberger is that he is not guilty of the CRIMINAL allegation of rape. That’s because the evidence in both Nevada and Georgia overwhelmingly supports his innocence. However, I have repeatedly called him out for his egomaniacal, jackass behavior and on this thread specifically called him a “moron.”
NOWHERE on this thread did I suggest whether he should or should not consume alcohol so I have NO idea why you are ranting at me about his presumed alcohol issues. I’ve made no reference to it because I don’t know whether you can lay off his behavior on alcohol anymore than you and Mike Florio do. He may be an ass drunk or sober.
Your comment does make clear once and for all that you have NEVER made the first effort to research ANYTHING to do with the accusations against Roethlisberger. Alcohol had NOTHING to do with Andrea McNulty’s allegation. Her complaint makes no mention of Ben being intoxicated. Obviously you decided his guilt based on your own hatred of the Steelers without bothering to even read the accusations against him.
You do not know what it is to have someone hold you down and rip away your power and dignity. I have never excused Ben’s bad behavior and certainly never defended him because of his Super Bowl wins. I have researched the cases and based MY comments on the EVIDENCE, trying to be as objective as I could.
You are not an honorable man. You are not a decent man. For something as low as you to call me trailer trash because I have listed the SAME facts given by the authorities is unbelievable. God what a pathetic excuse for a human being you are.

Really, what’s with the whole “I got raped” thing and it somehow giving you this fabulous insight on this situation, one you didn’t witness and have no direct knowledge of other than published police/media reports? Yeah, we all get you’re an attorney too…
I’ve never been raped, but if I had been, I can’t imagine using the experience to try to win pithy, anonymous arguments with other jackholes on ProFootballTalk.com.
But it’s your rape. Do what you want with it.

  143. Deb says: Jun 15, 2010 12:06 AM

    @Hehateme …
The exam revealed slight vaginal bruising and a small bleeding cut–also consistent w/consensual sex, fondling, masturbation–plus an infinitesimal amount of DNA too small to test or to have been the sole product of a rape. It could have come from hand contact or an earlier sexual encounter. (Asked if she’d sex w/anyone else that day, the DA wouldn’t comment.) No semen, sperm, pubic hair, or chemicals from a condom were found. Even withdrawal would have left enough semen/sperm for testing.

  144. Deb says: Jun 15, 2010 1:49 AM

    @NFC North Resident …
My brother is a criminal defense attorney. I’m a writer experienced in researching and writing on legal and medical issues. And you have no idea what knowledge, access, or contacts I have.
So you’ve never been raped? Then you probably haven’t spent hours w/other rape victims? Every story’s different, but all have common threads. Pricks the back of the neck when you hear a story missing those threads. Ever worked w/rape trauma or PTSD specialists? Studied victimology? Know what to look for in a victim’s behavior? Ever research behavior traits of sex abusers? So you’d know if any details in all these salacious Ben stories set off alarms, right?
Yes, it provides insight. But it’s not something I normally discuss. Most of the women who told me their stories never knew mine. I was working in a dangerous situation overseas and went through a lot of difficult experiences. Even those closest to me didn’t know for years. And I never intended to post it on a football site. One day some shrew accused me of betraying womankind and enabling rapists. That was hard to take, so I blurted out my history.
Since you’re such a colossal ass that you’d actually say to a rape survivor “if I’d been raped, yada yada” … maybe you would use a deep personal wound to win pithy arguments with jackholes. I wouldn’t. I’m arguing with jackholes because by calling the idiot QB a rapist, they’re calling those women victims. Since I know beyond doubt those women are part of the growing contingent of liars making false rape claims, hearing them called victims is upsetting. And I keep bringing up my rape history in a pitiful attempt to get across to fools that I would NEVER defend the idiot QB if there were ANY chance he raped someone.
Eventually, I’ll make my peace and learn to leave the liars to the wrath of God and ignore the jackholes, who will never go away–especially when Florio can get so many hits off them. In the meantime, yes, it’s my rape. But if I could magically give all the damage it caused to you, I would. Maybe some suffering would curb your outrageous arrogance.

  145. NFC North Resident says: Jun 15, 2010 9:07 AM

    @ Deb
Wow. Guess you put me in my place. Funny how you would wish such pain and unbearable suffering on complete strangers…again, on a football website, of all places.
I hope wishing me that harm makes you feel much better. I never wished you any harm whatsoever, just asked why you’d use such a horrible experience to gain leverage on other pricks hating on your QB, which you seem to do on a daily basis, regardless of how you try to paint it now.
My outrageous arrogance thinks you need to chill out a little, and stop wishing such tragedy upon other people who’ve done nothing wrong.
    Sheesh.

  146. NFC North Resident says: Jun 15, 2010 9:21 AM

Really Deb, that was a brilliant and disturbing display of hostility. I’ll be sure to let my wife and daughter know that somewhere out there, there is an anonymous Steelers fan wishing me to be raped.
    God Bless!

  147. Deb says: Jun 15, 2010 11:59 AM

    @NFC North Resident …
When you talk to you wife and daughter, be sure to share the eloquent speech about how YOU would handle YOUR rape … something you can surely envision … being a MAN. Yes, that was very classy and such an appropriate thing to say to a rape survivor.
I’m also a 3-time cancer survivor. Would you like to provide insights on how YOU would handle cancer better than I have? And my friends who’ve lost a child–perhaps you can tell them everything YOU would do differently in dealing with that nightmare? It’s so kind when strangers take time to share their unsolicited criticism of how we handle the most horrific moments of our lives … especially when they close with something compassionate like:
“But it’s your rape. Do what you want with it.”
My goodness, how could anyone possibly take a sarcastic, unprovoked taunt of a rape survivor as ANYTHING but an innocent inquiry.
And bless your heart, you must be quaking in your shoes that a woman on a Web site said NOT that she wanted you to be raped but that she would love for you to experience the DAMAGE something like that can cause … because if you’d ever experienced any real suffering in life you wouldn’t behave like a spoiled brat taunting other people over their heartaches. In fact, you’re now taunting me on multiple threads.
Yeah, what a classy “man” you are. Your family must be so proud.

Not sure what profession you’re in, but believe me when I say that rape, by legal definition, does not require a man to even put his penis in a woman, much less to ejaculate.
    I assume everyone knows this?

  151. Deb says: Jun 18, 2010 8:58 PM

    @DM …
Don’t know what profession you’re in, but the legal definition of vaginal rape by intercourse is forcible vaginal penetration by penis.
I assume everyone who isn’t brain dead knows this?
Ejaculation is not required. However, traces of seminal fluid remain even when a man withdraws prior to ejaculation. If a man uses a condom, chemical evidence of a condom remains.
There are all types of rape: digital, anal, oral, foreign object. NONE of that is relevant in this case. IN THIS CASE, the accuser alleged that Ben Roethlisberger vaginally raped her using his penis. That was her ONLY allegation. The prosecutor stated clearly that was the ONLY crime investigated. The medical examination showed that particular crime DID NOT OCCUR.

  152. DM says: Jun 19, 2010 10:29 AM

    @ Deb,
Why so insecure? I notice that every time anyone disagrees with you they’re brain dead, etc.
That quirk along with your very long posts and self proclaimed “extra knowledge” simply an attempt to get people to blindly believe? I doubt it’s very effective.
Forceable penetration with a foreign object, including fingers, is generally defined as rape although technically it’s sexual assault.
So maybe you’re playing technicalities here, saying there’s no evidence that Ben raped her but he likely sexually assaulted her? So in your mind is this more acceptable?
    Interesting.

  153. Deb says: Jun 19, 2010 2:48 PM

DM, I’m polite to people who offer intelligent opposing commentary. You approached me being smarmy and condescending–”not sure what profession you’re in” … “I assume everyone knows this.” Obviously you feel the need to prove … something. I don’t know or care what.
As I’ve already said, I’m aware of digital (that means fingers) and foreign-object rape. Since I’m a rape survivor who has worked with many victims, I don’t consider either acceptable. But in this case, both are irrelevant.
    * The Georgia woman told police Ben penetrated her with his penis.
    * The accuser did not allege digital (that means fingers) or foreign-object rape.
    * In multiple tellings, she either said she was not raped or that he used his penis.
    * The DA plainly told the press that penile rape was the ONLY crime alleged.
    * The medical exam showed penile rape did not occur.
It would also be unacceptable if he orally raped her, anally raped her, or kicked her in the shin. She didn’t allege any of those things either. You can name every type of rape and say, “Just because the medical exam didn’t show intercourse, doesn’t mean he didn’t do THIS. So there!!” But the ACCUSER is the one who makes the allegation, DM–not the guy on PFT. She made her accusation. The evidence showed the accusation she made was false.
I’m not playing technicalities, but you apparently are trying to play semantics and mind games on a serious subject that hits very close to home for me. I don’t know why I’ve attracted the attention of someone who doesn’t have enough genuine interest to even find out the exact accusation, but please get your laughs elsewhere.

  154. DM says: Jun 23, 2010 2:33 PM

    @Deb
You keep changing your multi-faceted story.
Before you were crowing that the victims couldn’t be victims because they couldn’t give details of the rape.
    Now they can.
    Convenient.
    Again – interesting.
BTW – I’m sorry you were allegedly raped (using your terminology) but it has no bearing on Ben’s guilt or innocence regardless of how many times you bring it up.
Why don’t you link all these inside sources so everyone can benefit from you standing?
