Mangini not ready to declare Delhomme the Browns' starter

Everyone expects Jake Delhomme to be the Cleveland Browns’ starting quarterback this season. But head coach Eric Mangini says that’s not a sure thing.

Addressing the media at the Browns’ minicamp this week, Mangini pulled a Frank Costanza and stopped short of naming Delhomme the starter, saying Seneca Wallace will also get work with the first offense and get an opportunity to prove that he deserves the top spot on the depth chart.

“We’re heading in that direction [with Delhomme as the starter], but we’ll head into camp and see what happens,” Mangini said, per Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “Jake has looked good, but Seneca’s done a really nice job too. They’ll both get work with the ones. It’s good to have this situation.”

Delhomme and Wallace will get an equal number of reps at the start of training camp, although it’s likely that Delhomme will get more reps with the first offense.

A QB competition in Cleveland? NOOO you don’t say… I thought Holmgren was going to put a stop to all this not knowing who the starter is..

The Browns passing game will be atrocious, but I think if they just keep pounding people with the run like they did on their 4 game win streak they may be OK.

Mangini is around this year so, that the “Bigshow, can dump him and blame him for everything!” Personally, I think Mangenious is a ratfink punk…
Never was really qualified and was told so by BB! He has an idea, but just enough to be dangerous.
These two guys Mangina and Holmgren are from two differint schools of thought…It’s only a matter of time before Eric is out of work!
Who was the last Superbowl team to run the westcoast offense? Green Bay? The year that Holmgren lost the Big dance with Seattle, they played the Steelers and Rapistburger had the worst QB rating of a winning Team in the modern era. They still didn’t win!
Now, Delhommy is going to win games by throwing picks and Jim brown isn’t welcome around anymore? Good luck Cleveland! You’ll need it!

But what about Brady? Brady Quinn! Or Troy Smith? Even better, Brady AND Troy! We don’t care about winning, we just want local boys!

    there is NO question here.
anyone with a half of a brain knows this.
come camp time, it will be obvious to the blind

Holmgren said there won’t be a QB competetion in training camp. This isn’t training camp. It’s minicamp…Holmgren said a starter will be named before the start of training camp so that player can get all the reps with the 1st string offense and get as prepared for the season as possible. So this is a meaningless story.

Interesting….but how does this relate to the Vikings?

Mangini won’t last the season in Cleveland. He’s just a moron.

  11. Ravenmuscle says: Jun 12, 2010 4:58 PM

Holmgren knows better. Delhomme is an interception machine…just ask the Panther fans.
The brownies should start working on their NUMBER ONE pick in next year’s draft today….that’s of the ENTIRE draft. The only reason the Clowns were EVER any good was because of Art Modell.

  12. Beezer says: Jun 12, 2010 5:16 PM

Does it matter who starts? If Delhomme starts the Browns will pick in the top 5 in the 2011 draft. If Wallace starts the Browns will pick in the top 5 of the 2011 draft.

Blinded by hate. Ignorant by design. Art Model had ONE championship year in Cleveland. The Browns had 8 League championships. Remember the name PAUL BROWN little man. Paul Brown revolutionized the NFL. He led the Browns to fame and power.
Art led us down the road to mediocrity. Then he stole the team in the dead of winter and smiled as he fired Belicheck and got lucky in 2000.
    you’re a turd ravenpus.
    GO BROWNS

  16. prmpft says: Jun 12, 2010 6:37 PM

nor should he be…jake should’ve seen the writing on the wall and been the SAINTS’ backup – that’s where he belongs…so he gets what he gets now…

  18. SterilizeTHenry says: Jun 12, 2010 6:41 PM

The biggest mistake the Browns made was drafting Colt McCoy. That takes them out of the running for a QB in next years draft. So when they have the #1 pick, they will pass on Jake Locker or Andrew Luck because they will think they already have an upcoming young QB in Colt McCoy. But McCoy stinks. He will flop and the franchise will be set back another 5 years.

  19. TheDPR says: Jun 12, 2010 6:42 PM

They’d be better off sticking Cribbs at QB.

Go with Seneca out of this bunch, at least he can throw decently on the run.

Really? What position did he play? I didn’t know there was an NFL position category for “cigar-munching traitor.”

  23. Sensual Lettuce says: Jun 12, 2010 8:43 PM

Wallace should get the start. He has a nice deep pass and is pretty careful with the ball, unlike Jake. Cleveland has a good OL with Thomas, Mack and Steinbach so Wallace can actually be able to play QB without running for his life like he did in Seattle, of course the option to run is still when none of the Browns wide outs will be able to get open, but thats a different story…

  24. Omega says: Jun 12, 2010 9:03 PM

Ravenmuscle, thanks for post it’s been a long time since I laughed so hard. Really.
The Browns were only good because of Art Model, hysterical.

  25. civilwarfish says: Jun 12, 2010 9:32 PM

I like Seneca Wallace. He is mobile, not untalented with his arm, and a threat on the receiving end as well. We would do worse than to give him the chance to start. And giving him that chance allows Mangini time to assess just how game-ready Delhomme is as well. Best man wins…pure and simple.
McCoy has been a winner everywhere he has played. Hes not prototypical, but he isnt Flutie-esque either. He has skills, lets see what he does with them before we write him off. I intend to give him every chance.
Mangini is a smart man, regardless of what the naysayers say. He demonstrated last year an ability to get things out of this team that nobody thought was there. I think he will become a Cleveland folk hero. In due time.

Great? What, to have a has been and a never was as your two choices as starters? Get ready for a long season Cleveland fans, of frustration and more losing.

  27. Dawgpound2009 says: Jun 12, 2010 10:20 PM

I don’t know if drafting Colt Mccoy was the Browns biggest mistake and that it would prevent them from taking Luck, Mallet or Locker in the 2011 Draft if they were in the top 5. I think their biggest mistake was keeping Brian Daboll as the O-Coordinator. Mccoy could always be a 2nd stringer if needed down the road. I think their most glaring need(s) are going to be defensive line / wide receiver into the 2011 draft.
Regardless, I think Penguini will be gone before the end of the 2010 season. If Penguini and his cronies cannot pull off at least 7 wins this year, it will be bye bye Belli-tubby.

  28. blmonroe12 says: Jun 12, 2010 10:42 PM

I dont think its an open competition – but its surely getting the focus away from Colt McCoy.. No one ever accused Mangini of being dumb, the guy always has a plan.. This year, he might just have enough talent to execute it..

Seneca may have a good throw on the run, but he’s not really shown me that he’s good, he’s had time to start in Seattle and didnt play well there, really, this is a year where they rebuild and wait for next year. Hopefully by next year they move on to Colt McCoy.

Disagree, FIRST off, how do you know Colt McCoy will stink???? He’s never played an NFL down yet, 2nd, i do NOT think it’s wise to draft a quarterback like Jake Locker when he’s go to reciever is Mohammad Massaquoi (a great 2nd reciever), with the McCoy pick, the Browns can use that 2011 high first round pick on a pick play reciever like either Michael Floyd (Notre Dame), AJ Green (Georgia) Julio Jones (Alabama) or another reciever i cant remember.

Ravens fans are a bunch of hypocrtical, second hand store thieves! Anybody that can praise Art Modell must have the I.Q. of an hampsters anus!
