Thomas Davis has “a sense of hope” about playing this year

Carolina Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis is having surgery today to repair a torn ACL in his right knee, which probably means he won’t play at all in 2010. But Davis actually has some optimism that he could return before the year is over.

Darin Gantt of the Charlotte Observer reports that there is a sense of hope from Davis’s camp after he got a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews.

Rod Woodson and Jerry Rice both returned to the field less than five months of suffering torn ACLs, so it’s not impossible for Davis to be back on the field by November. But it does seem awfully unlikely.

Panthers team doctor Pat Connor is performing the surgery in Charlotte. It’s the second surgery on Davis’s right ACL in the last seven months; Davis previously had ACL surgery in December.
