Browns dangle hollow offer to unsigned RFAs

Hopeful to entice a cluster of unsigned restricted free agents to report for a weekend minicamp, the Cleveland Browns made an unusual offer.

Any of the players who had yet to accept their RFA tender offers would be eligible for a $150,000 incentive, per Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

But, as always, there’s a catch.  The team would have to win 10 games in 2010, and each player would have to reach a specific performance threshold.

So while the Browns get points for creativity, the fine print puts this one in the “too good to be true” category.

To their credit, perhaps they used the restrictions for a legal reason… Something about incentives that are “not likely to be earned” for contract purposes?

no way in hell we are winning 10 games !

  3. nflisking says: Jun 13, 2010 10:50 AM

10 wins? They know that’s not going to happen. They’ll be lucky to win 4. Again.

  4. The Hogster says: Jun 13, 2010 10:54 AM

Why not make it a 10 million dollar bonus for a Superbowl win. Either way, the players know they’ll never see that money.

… so much for a vote of confidence in Mangini and the Browns by the RFAs…
If I were them I might actually be worried that the Browns would sign me long term.

Browns 2010 sched: bucs, chiefs, ravens, bengals, falcons, steelers, saints, patriots, jets, jaguars, panthers, dolphins, bills, bengals, ravens, steelers.
I defy you to find 5 wins on that schedule. Most likely, they’ll be 2-0 and thinking they’re playoff bound. Then rake off a 7 gm losing streak, effectively ending Mangini’s career

the browns will win 10 games but it will take 2 years!

  8. Insomniac says: Jun 13, 2010 12:07 PM

What about the players who already signed their tenders?

Agree with TheToolofTools, no way the Browns win 10 this year. I do see a big improvement around the 7-8 win range. For those of you outside of C-Town or die hards fail to recongize the mass improvement this team showed at the end of last year. They came together and played some damn good football given the atrocious QB play and the fact the defensive was chalked full of second team and practice squad players. Mangini haters will never admit that was one hell of a coaching job by that staff at the end of the year.
With the exception of Roth I could care less it Elam or Jackson sign. I am sure Browns fans everywhere will not miss D’Qwell’s 5-8 yard down field tackles and if anybody can please tell me one impact play Elam had last year I would love to hear it.

Too bad they didnt offer the players some “get out of water bottle fine free” cards instead.

cant stand the browns, never have,,but this is very original,i like thier creative thinking, more teams should use this kind of incentive driven motivation, the one thing these athletes hold dear more than anything is of coarse, money, good for the browns

Hmmmm… what’s better? What you wrote about the Browns, or the way your own team are dubbed playoff or SB contenders by the media (or by themselves) every other year and yet are perennial choke artists, blowing it at the end of the season every time? I can’t find much difference.
The Browns are like the guy at the party who ends up taking the ugly, fat chick home and banging the daylights out of her, while the Bengals are the guy who takes home the hottest chick at the party, but then can’t get it up and is horribly embarrased.

Must be collusion? Those mean owners expect production? Now, they’ve gone too far! Hell let’s just pay every player 50 million a year? The NFL will be dead, but that’s not Florio’s problem!!! Until his little website dries up and blows away….

dude… wow. i am a HUGE bengals fan… and that’s the funniest shit i’ve heard in a long time.
for real though, and for paul brown’s sake, i wouldn’t mind seeing ohio dominate the afc north next year. anything to see the steelers wrythe i guess

OK- bucs, chiefs, jags, panthers, bills, and 2-out-of-6 wins in the AFC North. That’s 7. And if you don’t like the Browns, spare us all by coming to their posts.
Further, it’s not the “Browns” that have sucked for so long, it’s the “players”………meaning, you don’t suck when you put on the orange helmet, you suck before that. “Yo, I’m Braylon Edwards, I play for a shatty team”……..really?? How much money did you take out of that team, while embarrasing yourself with your brick hands, lack of route running ability, poor concentration, and suspect breakaway speed, Capt. No. 3 overall pick? “Yo, I’m Kellen Winslow, I play for a shatty team”……..really? How much money did you take out of that team while spending almost two years on the sideline after your Evil Kenieval attempt?? After the Browns threw you a bone and decided to NOT hold you in contract breach, which you most certainly were. Perhaps these RFA’s should look in the mirror and question their own performance if they feel this incentive is a joke, and the team will never make it to 10 wins.
    But they won’t.

I hear ya man. I’d much rather see Ohio battle it out for the AFCN crown *every* year than the “We just came into the league a few years ago and think we own the effin universe” Ravens or the “We are owed a championship every year and our QB is a rapist” Steelers.

I got 100 “credits” the Browns dont win 2 division games this year. The Ravens and Bengals both improved the rosters and added depth that would start for the Browns. You might split with the Steelers but history says you got your one win of the decade against them last year.

  19. Dixon29 says: Jun 13, 2010 5:58 PM

The Browns were never going to win 10 games in 2007 either… but they sure as hell did.

  20. civilwarfish says: Jun 13, 2010 8:09 PM

Doomsday prophecies and naysayers abound. Always have. Often well earned. But look for a moment at the 2007 season. NOBODY gave them a chance. Heres a few links that illustrate this, including a couple Browns oriented blogs…

This team, with no hope and written off…went 10-7. Remember? We do here in Cleveland. We waited to see if the Colts would win or lose to see if we made the playoffs and the Colts effectively threw the game.
This town was insanely supportive. We were ready to stand with our Brownies and do the playoffs…but the Colts lost.
We are ready again, but most of us realize this likely isnt the year, but we also know it is coming…we are on our way! So laugh while you can Ravens fans. Mock us now Steeler fans. Taunt us if you must Bengals people. Our day is at hand. I hope our fans take the high road and do NOT engage in such talk against others except maybe Pittsburgh.
    GO BROWNS

The Browns have very loyal fans and deserve a better team than what they had. On that note, they also deserve a better coach.
WTF is that.. the ONLY team to want Mangini.

I can defy 5 wins out of Browns 2010 sched: bucs, chiefs, ravens, bengals, falcons, steelers, saints, patriots, jets, jaguars, panthers, dolphins, bills, bengals, ravens, steelers.
The Steelers, Bucs, Chiefs, Falcons, Jaguars, Panthers, and Bills – are all winnable games, on paper.
Unless the Steelers return to running the ball the way they used to, they are fair game and very suspect, especially now that Browns know they can beat them with that bogus roster they had last year! The Panthers are re-building, Bills are in the infant stages of their new regime, the Chiefs are equal to the Browns in depth, the Falcons are a tad bit better, but not way better and the Jags are on the same level as the Browns, considering the Browns beat them last year too!

  23. OLDCRACKER says: Jun 14, 2010 11:07 PM

If we had some WR’s that could run AND catch the ball, 8-8 might be possible. But….
