Blue flu outbreak hits Gang Green

NFL_revis3.jpgPlayers unhappy with their contracts apparently have found a way to fight back, arguably without running afoul of the strict terms of their legal commitments.

Over the weekend, Vikings running back Adrian Peterson conveniently missed a mandatory minicamp because he deemed it more important to attend the Fourth Annual Adrian Peterson Day in East Palestine, Texas.  The fact that coach Brad Childress found out about it via the Internet (hello, Coach!) suggests that Peterson has trotted out a little passive-aggressive protest to his current contractual circumstances.

Now, another player who more clearly has expressed his displeasure has tried the non-holdout holdout maneuever.  As expected, Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis, for example, reported for the team’s mandatory minicamp.  Per Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, Revis sat out a portion of the Monday morning minicamp practice.

Just a little light-headed,” Revis told Mehta with a smile.

But then Revis misplayed the passive-aggressive strategy, telling Mehta that the fourth-year cornerback “was fighting for [his] family.”  Asked whether sitting out of practice should be regarded as a protest, Revis said, “Call it what you want.”

Coach Rex Ryan initially projected denial regarding the situation.

“When they tell you something is not right, you believe them to be a
man of their word,” Ryan said, per Mehta.  “I believe Darrelle would be that way.
Now if he’s pulling a fast one on us, he’s pulling a fast one on us.”

Informed that Revis was making a statement, Ryan was more pragmatic.  Sort of.

“Well, he made a statement,” Ryan said.  “That would disappoint me,
for sure.  Because he’s out here and competes every day. . . .  I’ll talk to
Darrelle.  I believe in Darrelle, so when he tells me he’s light headed
or got a hamstring, I’ll believe it.”

Then, Ryan seemed to make an excuse for Revis.  “If his situation is that he’s got something on his mind and he’s not
focused 100 percent, then I really don’t want him out there,” Ryan said.

The real question becomes whether the Jets up the ante, claiming that Revis’ conduct triggers the voiding of the guaranteed nature of the total salary of $20 million he’s due to earn in 2011 and 2012, if as expected he exercises his right to wipe out the final two years of his current deal and if as expected the Jets decide to buy back the final two seasons at $5 million in 2011 and $15 million in 2012.

Then there’s the bigger question of whether the Jets will make this problem go away by paying Revis.

IRENE, South Africa – Relax, U.S. fans. Tim Howard should be in goal Friday against Slovenia.
Howard is expected to play after U.S. team medical staff examined him Monday and decided no further tests were needed on his bruised ribs. Howard is making “substantial improvement” following a collision with Emile Heskey in Saturday night’s 1-1 draw against England, U.S. Soccer said in a statement.

“fighting for his family”….kind of reminds me of the old Ty Law statement “got to feed my family.” Yeah, sorry no sympathy, try living on what mortals live on.

Stupid jests!!!! The implosion begins. What are they going to do when the other three players hold out and start playing games? That front office is way too dumb to handle all this. It’s hilarious!!!!!
SAME OL’ JESTS!!!!! It’s in their DNA.

This whole league CBA garbage and the lack of a contract is screwing up the league….
Fans don’t want op hear this BS – players are out of their minds with this Baby BS…. Agents are behind the whole thing but, wake up – There has to be a CBA before everyone can get on the same page..
But, please with pretending it’s a Jets issue – it’s aleague issue the Jets just happen to have a few more players due right now..
    IS Tommy Brady signed yet?

12-4 and wrestle control of AFC East away from the mighty Pats in 2010.
put it in the books (early) and fuse with our new Sexy Rexy DNA!!

  9. texasPHINSfan says: Jun 14, 2010 2:06 PM

The Jets are too cheap to pay their quality players.
Come on Jets, own up and pay your talent! I’d gladly pay Revis the $15M+ to be on our team.

  10. 305phinphan says: Jun 14, 2010 2:06 PM

Rex, you sit there and say he is the best CB in the league, now pay the man like he is. You shouldn’t have opened your fat mouth, I don’t blame Revis one bit and I hope he continues acting like this until he gets that contract.

  11. SomeFans says: Jun 14, 2010 2:06 PM

Good ole’ Gag Green…. you can always count on them for laughs.
Not much else mind you but they are the butt of many jokes around the league. I wish they would just break down and pay the man his $20M. I mean, he’s just 1 player after all with his hand out.
And there is NO fear about this franchise so don’t stoop to that comical statement again trolls.

  12. SomeFans says: Jun 14, 2010 2:07 PM

Austin looks like he’s about ready to smack down Revis but good!

  13. MotorCityKitties says: Jun 14, 2010 2:08 PM

This is the problem when you have a player play ‘too well’. He is regarded the #1 CB in the league after his ’09 performance and now 20M guaranteed isn’t enough for his family in 2 years, LOL

A little excited JetsAreAJoke? Getting too worked up for a few sentences that have been twisted by the media…Wait for the season to start, I don’t know, maybe like Week 8 to determine the “implosion”. Don’t let the hot Florida sun cook your tiny little brain too much, I know its getting in the high 90’s down there.

Heh 12-4? The Jets haven’t won 12 games in a season since ’98 and before that….ummmm….NEVER.
On the other side, they’ve LOST 12 or more games in a season…..7 times in their history, and they also had 3 straight 11-loss seasons when the league only played 14 games.

If the Jets weren’t in Jersey, they wouldn’t get this hype. Asomugha is overated. His biggest claim is that teams don’t throw against him. Why throw his way when there are so many other ways to beat the Raiders?
Revis is the beneficiary of a good D line. He should thank Kris Jenkins. What have the Jets won again? (Please don’t say Namath).
Rex is a walkin’ / talkin PR man.
    Mouth is his #1 organ.

  21. ttommytom says: Jun 14, 2010 3:01 PM

Revis is getting 20 million over the next 2 years. I don’t understand the problem.
99.999999999999999 per cent of the world can live FOREVER off of that and include a few generations to boot.
But he needs more. And what family is he talking about? Extended?
p.s. Soccer is a great way to get in shape but I’d rather watch a SpongeBob marathon. I don’t understand what the visual attraction is to that sport.

  22. BigBear123 says: Jun 14, 2010 3:01 PM

Maybe we should start a collection to help him support his family in this time if need.

  23. ttommytom says: Jun 14, 2010 3:04 PM

p.s. Blue flu refers to Cops not breaking the law by refusing to go to work under a bad (or no) contract situation. Thus they ‘go sick’, thus the ‘blue flu’.

Actually, I can’t believe all the stupid jests fans. “a few sentences that have been twisted by the media”? It was actually your hero Rexy that is getting worked up. He builds this guy up like he’s the greatest and now he has to side with management and his lap band is getting too tight. And let’s hope your little pea brain doesn’t get too overworked with that stench up there. It will eventually cool off down here, stink is forever up there.

  27. ampats says: Jun 14, 2010 3:53 PM

This is a classic example of “how the bloom is coming off the rose” meaning lets see how Head Coach Rex Ryan deals with the situation because whether he likes it or not he is part of management.
There seems to be alot of turmoil when all these players are under contract. Its still June so we will wait and see how the HC of the Newark Jests handles alittle adversity.
I said in a previous post that situations like this will define Rex Ryan HC not RR DC.

  28. tom coughlin's coat holder says: Jun 14, 2010 3:54 PM

revis is everything and more,he’s that good a player, but the big mistake here is how they are handling mangold.the team dropped faneca and now is playing cutesy with mangold, there goes the left side of the line.you can not expect to go into the season with two unknows at left guard and center.sanchez is going to be buried deeper into giants stadium then hoffa.

  29. GreenAsGrass says: Jun 14, 2010 4:14 PM

Sexy Rexy’s defense will be ready to chew leather a week before season begins. Counting the days until week #1 vs. Ravens should be a great game on both ends, then week #2 vs. mighty Pats looking for deja vu (jets beat pats at home week 2 2009).
And yes, I must admit, I can’t wait for the BEATDOWN of the fish this upcoming season. Fish D isn’t good enough, and nobody named Chad will have 3 seconds to throw to Marshall all day long.
    12-4

YES, THIS is the jests. Pretty pathetic for all the yapping these losers put out. Like Jason Taylor said: the jets take the C and L out of CLASS. *priceless*

  31. Mumakata says: Jun 14, 2010 4:23 PM

These Jets will be lucky to win 6 games. I remember when Buddy Ryan was the next coming after leading the bears defense. what did he do? The same as Rex will do. Nothing. The Jets suck.

Obviously, he doesn’t need three seconds to throw. He didn’t need it last year and beat them jests twice. The second game only needing 104 total yards to beat them.

It’s amazing that the jests fans can’t figure out that they looked pretty good last year WHILE NO TEAMS HAD ANY FILM TO STUDY on them. I remember not a few years ago the “Mangenious” was going to bring them to the promised land. Anyone know how that turned out?

but i must say, Rex actually hit it right on the head here.
“Our team’s going to be just fine. I hope teams are banking on that something’s going to be wrong with the chemistry of our team,” he said. “Every single team has contract situations, whatever. We’ve got Darrelle, Nick Mangold, David Harris, D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Shaun Ellis. That’s what happens when you’ve got a lot of good football players. You’re trying to keep all your good players.”
    followed by….HAHAHAHA
“But again, this is an outstanding football team. When we get to playing, we’ll be just fine. We plan on being the team that wins the whole thing, so we’ll see.”
