Vikings can expect problems with Adrian Peterson

We complained loudly in this space on Monday regarding the poor customer service we had received from the folks at Time Warners, the custodians of the Internet juice that allows for the creation of PFT Daily segments and for my posting of new PFT blurbs.

On second thought, maybe we shouldn’t complain so loudly.

Anyway, the situation finally has been fixed, and the PFT Daily equipment once again is working.

Today, we look at the problems that the Vikings have had of late with running back Adrian Peterson.  We think it’s just the beginning.

We also chime in with our take on the whole “heavy ball” solution to Peterson’s propensity to poop the bed at the worst possible moments.

  1. Hell yeah he’s pissed!! Before the arrival of Brett, AD was the MAN. Now, he’s just a talented RB with fumbling issues.

  2. This passive-aggressive BS is for chicks. If this guy wants a new contract, he needs to put on his big boy pants, call up the owner, and come right out and say it. Otherwise, he needs to man-up, shut up, and show up. Pretty simple.

  3. I was blown away as well Florio when I heard the Heaavy ball thing. makes no sense!!!! If anything he should be carrying a lighter ball. You nailed it with the baseball bat doughnut thing. Is Childress really this stupid?? Letting Favre have the summer off, heavy footballs, Peterson schism……it never ends for the most disgusting and losing sports team of our lifetime.

  4. Although I truly believe that this segment is trying to make something out of nothing, I do agree with a couple of points you made.
First, AD should get paid…After the season is done. I don’t think he should or that he deserves to get paid at the end of year 3 of a 5 year contract. After year 4, pay him. Even if he has an off year, pay him after year 4.
Next, I agree that carrying a heavy ball is not the best option to cure the fumbles. The best option is to carry a lighter ball all over the place. Have teammates try to knock it out of his hands in the chow place, bathroom, locker room, etc… If that happens then figure out some sort of punishment. Well not punishment, but like some sort of something. I’m sure Chilly can figure something out. Anyways, the purpose would be that AD always needs to be aware of where that football is. I understand teammates wouldn’t want to throw AD under the bus, but they would if it will make him a better player.

  5. Who knows is there’s really any issue with AD. Generally he’s been a model player/teammate. But if he can’t hold onto the rock, there are plenty of other backs ready to take carries from him. Perception is king – skipping the weekend mini camp shouldn’t sit well with fans or coaches – he needs to at least show he’s serious about getting better, and doing whatever it takes to achieving that.

  6. His fumble problems are in his free swinging of the ball in the open field. It’s wreckless. Someone should bolt his arm to his side so he doesn’t have any more problems.

  7. Fact: AP is one of the best RB’s in the NFL, even with the fumbles.
Fact: Brad Childress is one of the most idiotic Head Coaches in the NFL.
The idea that AP is going to be some type of problem as time goes on is a joke. The problem is that Childress has his panties in a bunch that AP was a man of his word and had given his word to attend AP day. The notion that Childress “didn’t know about it” until a few days before is more evidence that he is terrible and uninvolved coach. Speaking about it to the media speaks to that even more. This is a man who tried to fine a player for missing practice to attend a funeral (Williamson), and only after consulting Tony Dungy relized that it was a dick thing to do. Childress is egotistical, and seems to be the only one not to realize that his ego is far bigger than his talent.
As for the heavy ball, we can all mock or question the method all we want, but the fact of the matter is, Adrian Peterson knows how to be a Running Back in the NFL better than Brad Childress.
The Vikings didn’t lose the NFC Championship in New Orleans. They lost it in Carolina and in Chicago. Childress let his ego cloud the fact that Brett Favre was the true leader of that team, not him, and in turn, lost home field advantage in the playoffs.

  8. Doesnt the obvious fact that he drops the ball like its covered in dung by someone with OCD qualify as already having problems with him?? (joke. well..kinda)
I do like the way he runs. Exciting. Not a Vikings fan. Maybe AD should try to wear heavier gloves. And some stick-um. Or just chain it to his hand (the old ball and chain method).

  9. so with all that said,it was just a whole bunch of guessing on your part, think maybe you need more evidence than one missed day of practice, ood luck in the future

  10. Part Time is becoming almost a non-factor. His production in 2009 was essentially 1-yard plunges. The Vikings’ run-blocking unit has been severely marginalized over this past season. You don’t rush for 2000 yards without horses up front.
Mix that all up and include Part Time’s propensity to cough up the football way to often because he lacks discipline as the result of not being very bright, along with some Toby G and savvy vets, and the Old Gray Mare at QB, and I would dare Part Time to sit out.
Part Time is good, but we witnessed last season that with an average run-blocking unit, he is unable to carry an offense for an entire game. Not that many can, but compared to the hype he generates.

  11. Why the speculation? Why doesn’t someone, say an NFL reporter type, simply ask Peterson or his agent what the deal is?
And it’s not like he’s got a Chris Johnson type deal. I think with his contract escalators, he’ll make $7M this year and $10M next year, which are amounts comparable with top tier RBs. If he’s smart, he’ll kick ass this year, clean up his fumblitis, and then start the contract campaign — something he may very well be doing but obviously we don’t know for sure since no one has bothered to ask him.

  12. Who cares! The Vikes pretty much bitchslapped Dallas all over the field, and made a crybaby out of Keith Brooking. That’s just funny stuff right there!

  13. I’ll take the same kind of ‘schism’ we had last year with Favre the media loved to trumpet like the whores they are. Expect Peterson to come out and start stomping skulls in September.

florio’s trying his damndest to create one.

  15. True, with Brookings antics prior to every Cowboys game, he did come across like a crybaby.

  16. What!!? Only 1800 yards and 18 TD’s! I don’t care if you are the leading rusher in the league over the last 3 years, get in camp! You’re no Favre, buddy. Favre is the new savior and you’re nothing now. He’s a good old boy, he has fun playing the game during non-training camp hours and he’s won as many playoff games in the last 13 years as Trent Dilfer!
SKOL! SKOL! THIS IS OUR YEAR!

  17. This is what happens when owners hire Lap-Dogs for head coaches!..Most of em dont have the balls to speak thier own minds and be REAL coaches anymore. God forbid the head coach tell brett to get as to camp NOW if hes going to play for this team. I miss Lombardi and others…now you have dessent and problems with ego…its all out of control.

  18. I usually wouldn’t do this because I’m not too sure that anyone actually reads these post other than the posters themselves, but I’ll do it anyway.
    Florio,
The theory behind carrying around a heavier ball is actually real simple and theoretically makes sense. As you stated his fumbles typically come from him attempting to gain extra yards after contact. He’ll hold the ball away from his body to keep balance and fight defenders off allowing for someone to easily poke it loose. By carrying around a 14lb football it forces him to hold the ball high and tight at all times because otherwise it would just drop out his grasp. If he can get accustom to holding a heavy ball high and tight it will in turn make holding a lighter football high and tight effortless.
Again that’s just the theory. Whether or not it actually works remains to be seen.

  19. #1 Walter Payton had more fumbles in his first three years in the league than AD has. Good thing Chicago noticed that and got rid of him….
#2 The heavy ball thing is something all the RBs in Minnie work with, and for all I know every where else in the league.
#3 AD got a great contract as the #7 pick in the draft, you don’t hear him complaining because he’s not underpaid and hasn’t even started looking ahead to his next contract.
#4 There are only 2 stories in Minnesota right now. Butt Farte and AD. Nothing has changed about either so ya’ gotta make stuff up to get people’s attention.
FLASH – Breaking Story! Butt Farte hasn’t decided if he’s going to play again.

  20. Grease up a regular football for him to carry in practice.
That will make him aware if he holds it too loosely.

  21. Please Mike, enlighten us, when exactly is the worst possible moment to poop the bed?

  22. Good job Florio. As always, we love hearing your opinion on Time Warner and Adrian Peterson. Just the facts.

  23. And this is why the Packers ditched #4.
You can’t have one player getting preferential treatment. The other players start lining up for their preferential treatment.
Grow a pair Chilly. Get control of your team.
All the haters can bash TT for doing what he’s done. But the cancer got cut out. Jolly and Underwood could be next.

  24. Why do people think CHILLDRESS is so stupid. He has gotten 2 more wins a year since he started, 2 division titles out of 4 years, 2 playoff appearances, 1 nfc championship appearance. I would say that makes the Coach look pretty damn good! On top of that…if you can find a coach/VP that has drafted better than the vikes please let me know!! Chilldress has his hands in on the draft!!
I think Chilldress runs the team like a team should be run! He is no nonsense and I love him for that!

  25. Have you ever carried a football in your life Florio? You should be “conscious” about what you say. That comment about carrying the ball sounds rediculous from a guy who has never played a down of football.

  26. The NFLPA would probably never allow this but I say put one of those electic dog collars on him and shock him every time he fumbles.

  27. Now for Peterson…he makes 7 million this year and 10 million next year…I don’t see any problem with those annual salaries and I don’t think Peterson does either. He missed because it was HIS DAY in Palenstine, TX…thats it. I don’t think we should read anymore into it.
As for double standard…every VIKING PLAYER knows Favre will skip camp. It has been laid out for them and they know and better yet accept it. Peterson will shore up his fumbling problems! I am not worried about it. Check the stats for the likes of Walter Payton and Eric Dickerson. Both had more fumbles in their first 3 years in the league and better yet…BOTH are in the Hall of Fame!!
I say watch out cause the vikes will be just as good if not better this coming year. Oh yea Percy Harvin added 17 lbs of muscle without losing a step!! Watch out Gay Bay Buttpackers cause Favre will carve you up 2x again this year!! MAN I LOVE IT!!

  28. The solution to Adrian’s fumble problems is simple. During training tell everyone on defense that the purpose is to strip the ball. Let him work with that over and over again.

  29. The solution to Adrian’s fumble problems is simple. During training tell everyone on defense that the purpose is to strip the ball. Let him work with that over and over again.

  30. AP is asking to paid $1,000,000 per fumble. He knows he’ll his his incentive then. Oh by the way the Heavy Ball was Homer28’s idea.

  31. It’s hard to think of who might beat the Vikings in the playoffs this year, besides the Saints who will still prolly be good this year. Dallas was horrible against the Vikes, the Packers D gave up like 50 pts. and didn’t improve any because their gay g.m. is too cheap to sign free agents, Warner is gone from Arizona…
Nah it’ll be the Vikes in the NFC this year.

  34. Citizen Strange:
That was damned funny, yet not all together a bad idea.
Doctors once claimed claim shock treatment was the cure-all for people that couldn’t get it together. Infusing the electrode within a dog collar just makes the process more portable and flexible.

    _______________________
Yeah, but how’s it going to look when Chilly has AP running around practice (when he eventually does show up) with a nerf-football?

  36. The purpose of a heavy football is to train your bicep to be in a constant state of contraction when running with the ball. The higher that the ball is carried, the more contracted your bicep is. This leads to an increase in functional strength and reduces the likelihood that the ball will be ripped from your hands. One of the premises of a heavier ball is to force the running backs to hold the ball higher to combat potential fatigue, which is more likely to occur if you are holding the ball lower.
If you want to test out this method to understand what I am talking about can do it very easily.
Stand with your with your arm out at 90 degrees (you can be flexed) and have someone push down on your hand.
Then do a full bicep curl and hold your arm there and have someone try to push your hand down.
You’ll see that the functional strength is greatly increased, as well as the ball is better protected by the rest of the body when it is higher. Which in turn leads to a less likelihood of fumbling.
If you watch Adrian’s fumbles the majority happens when he has a lower arm angle. The defenders will either rip it out or punch it out from behind because he does not have all points properly covered. If he keeps it high and tight the problem (in theory) goes away.

How is that possible? I already couldn’t be happier that we were fortunate enough to have a QB on staff that is better than Favre. And Favre was a problem (see above,) who is now your problem, and he wanted out anyway. Combined with the fact that the Vikings are not much better than the Packers…what is the point you are trying to make? I couldn’t be happier with the current status of the Packers. Guys like you try to convince themselves that everything is A-OK in Minihapless by directing the attention in a different direction. Nice try. No cigar. No trophy. No nothing. How could I possibly be more bitter than I am? Obviously Favre playing with the Vikes instead of the Packers pushed the Vikes all the way to the NFC championship game and left the Packers stuck at 0 division titles and 0 playoff wins since Favre left; we Packers fans could not be more miserable about the status of the Packers.
On top of which we’re stuck with the cheapest and gayest g.m. in the league, plus all of us in Wisconsin are obese. Someone stop the pain please…

And what was the expectation of the Packers last year? Did they exceed or miss? vikes?

  48. The part that PFT and a lot of media sources are missing is that AP isn’t significantly underpaid. His rookie contract was incentive laden (relative to most top 10 picks) – not Ricky Williams-esque, but still very nice compensation for performance based measures. Most of these he has triggered. He also had a couple points in the deal where he triggered big bumps on the back-end years of the deal which are now beginning (2010-2011). He would obviously get more money on the open market, but compared to some of these other potential hold outs or even 1st round overahcievers (i.e. Revis) AP has been much better compensated. To put him in the same class as Chris Johnson who is significantly underpaid is just poor understanding of his current financial situation. Get with it Mike and Greg! You’re trying to create something that isn’t there.

  51. 1) Adrian Peterson has a big money contract now.
    2) As a 7th overall draft pick he is overpaid. He has not earned another contract.
    3) The vikings as a team were 24th in yards/rushing attempt.
    4) 23.8% of his rushing attempts were for a loss or no gain.
    5) Peterson led NFL RB’s in fumbles.
    6) Peterson’s yards per attempt have been declining. 5.6 yards/attempt 2007, 4.8 yards/attempt 2008, 4.4 yards/attempt 2009.
    7) The vikings know he is a fumbler with declining production. They spent 2 of their first 3 draft picks getting his replacement, Toby Gerhart, in this year’s draft.
    8) Peterson does not play on passing downs. He can’t block and can’t pick up the blitz.
Until he develops the skills to be and every down and cuts down on his fumbling he will never get a big money contract. Regardless of his yards prior to turnover.

  69. The heavy football is meant to train Peterson’s mind to be very concious of the football. We did this on my high school team. It isn’t the same reason that baseball players put the weight on the bat. Chilly’s analogy is wrong. Perhaps Chilly doesn’t know much about baseball. Oh no!
If you carry a 10 pound football all through practice you are going learn to be more concious of it. You won’t just suddenly forget because the weight is gone. That is stupid.

Super is talking about the african american gentleman on the old spice commercials.
Calling him buck is bordering on racism.
Evidently though, in trying to say that Pervy is turned on by the guy, Super is making it known that he is the one with a 1/2 a roll of rolaids going every time he sees it on TV.

To clear up any confusion. When the roided out “african american” made his debut in the old spice commercials I said that he reminded me of Pervy here and that his member moved a little bit everytime he saw that ad. pervy then was the one to coin him “the big buck” which proved his envy.
