Jerry Jones gets involved in NCAA realignment

NFL_jones_250.jpgNot long ago, the Big 12 conference teetered on the brink of a full-blown implosion.  But then Texas renewed its vows with the group that truly has become the Big 10, with the defections of Nebraska to the new Big 12-And-Counting and Colorado to the Pac-Whatever.

Enter Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.  With a gleaming new football cathedral in Dallas available to host any number of Big 12 games — and possibly two of them simultaneously — Jones has a vision for the conference.

Our sister site, CFT, has the details.

For starters, Jones wants his alma mater, Arkansas, to join the Big 12 from the SEC.  But here’s the whopper.  And, with Jones, there’s always a whopper.

He wants the Big 12 to add Notre Dame.

Frankly, we’d never, ever bet against the guy.  Except when it relates to his NFL team winning a playoff game.

Jones, you dumb-a$$. How about that great big TV market in your back yard — called Dallas/Fort Worth — that so far has no team in a major conference.
Why the f*ck would you reach so far for teams that don’t want your conference, when consistent BCS-buster TCU would die to play in the Big XII, and would die to play their home games in Jerry’s World, and you could finally start to capture all those DFW TV sets that aren’t tuned in to Texas/OU/A&M/Tech games on Saturdays again
Put TCU in Jerry’s World and in the Big XII, and add either BYU or Colorado State, and you will have more than adequate replacements for the departed Nebraska and the pathetic Colorado

Yes, Dallas had been in the longest post-season drought in franchise history before hammering Philly 34-14. But, you do realize that was their NFL leading 33rd play-off win, don’t you?

They’re going to have to do better than a couple of winning seasons added to their history before anyone other than alums are scared of anything they do on the field. It wouldn’t hurt if they actually played some decent teams every once in a while.

Jerry brought 3 Super Bowls to Dallas and has helped make the Cowboys the most successful NFL Franchise. Worth the most money and has the best stadium in the world for them to play in. If anyone can get Notre Dame into the Big 12, it’s Jerry Jones.

This has to be one of the most ignorant rants that I’ve seen on this site. Do you really think that DFW area doesn’t tune into the Big 12? I may not like Jones but the fact is that he’s more interested in filling up his stadium with a championship game like he had last year and neither he NOR the Big 12 have ever worried about the people turning into the Big 12 on TV. Stick to ranting about the Steelers because you obviously don’t have a clue about the Big 12.

Daniel, wake up, you’re dreaming. First off, the greatest success that the Cowboys have had since JJ bought the team is when he actually handed over control of football decisions to the other JJ. Secondly, ND alums and officials are laughing their behinds off right now if they read what JJ wants to happen. They turned down the Big 10 in the past, a conference that plays where they live, has the same kind of history that they do, makes a whole lot more money than the Big 12 does, shares revenue and decision making power equally, and has the greatest academic reputation of any conference. Ok, maybe the Ivy League has a better overall academic reputation. They did so because they savor their independence. So, now they’re supposed to give up their independence and move to the Big 12 where they’d make less money, be in a conference with a lesser academic reputation, and is completely dominated by Texas? I don’t think so. JJ, don’t hold your breath, you’ll black out. I don’t see Arkansas leaving the SEC to come to come to the Big 12 and take a big pay cut just so they can be Texas’ b!tch.

  13. danielcp0303 says: Jun 16, 2010 11:16 PM

Steve W….I’m awake. If you think Jerry Jones had no say in the team when Jimmy was around, you’re crazy. And shouldn’t Jerry get credit for actually hiring Jimmy Johnson? Exactly. And frankly Texas doesn’t need Notre Dame in the Big 12, it would just be icing on the cake. The Big 12 goes as Texas does, you’re the one that needs to get out of bed and wake up.

  14. Bill In DC says: Jun 16, 2010 11:25 PM

yeah, you’re a laugh a minute with the playoff win stuff. Only, since Jerry Jones teams are 14-7 in the playoffs, your joke kinda makes you look a little stupid.

  15. Brad Miller says: Jun 16, 2010 11:26 PM

Florio, I usually don’t add to the already laundry list amount of trash talk remarks that are sure to follow each of your articles. But in this case I couldn’t help myself. If you didn’t remember, Dallas won in the playoffs last year. Need I remind you that the Cowboys also have 3 Super Bowl championships under his ownership since 1989. The Cowboys have won more playoff games during his time owning the team than most other franchises in the NFL… you dumb ass.

“Jerry brought 3 Super Bowls to Dallas”
Nope, the Vikings did that by making one of the worse trades in history. Jerry has done nothing since he was given an entire draft’s worth of extra picks. Yeah, the guys a genius when he has twice as many picks as any other team. When he doesn’t, not so much.

  17. ItalianArmyGuy says: Jun 16, 2010 11:53 PM

TCU has had 7 top 25 finishes since 2000 – more than Arkansas (1) and Notre Dame (4) combined.

They have also beaten the teams that are willing to schedule them: in 2009, they beat Virginia (ACC) and Clemson (ACC); 2008 Stanford (Pac 10); 2007 Baylor (Big 12), Stanford (Pac 10); 2006 Baylor (Big 12), Texas Tech (Big 12); 2005 Oklahoma (Big 12), Iowa State (Big 12); 2004 Northwestern (Big 10); 2003 Vanderbilt (SEC), Arizona (Pac 10); 2002 Northwestern (Big 10); — basically one or more BCS conference out-of-conference wins per year — certainly as good of an out-of-conference schedule as a “power” like Texas during that time period.

Don’t believe TCU has TV viewers in Dallas?? Look at these numbers from their 2010 Fiesta Bowl loss to Boise State – they swept the on-air competition with nearly 900,000 viewers that night in Dallas/Fort Worth. No other network managed more than 210,000 viewers in the metroplex that night. That included nearly 400,000 viewers in the coveted age 18-49 bracket — blowing out the competition.

  18. Tillman says: Jun 17, 2010 12:39 AM

TCU? You have to be kidding. The same TCU who averages about 25K fans a game? You want to put them in Jerry World? High School teams would draw better than TCU. I don’t mind TCU, but you have no clue when you try to equate TCU to ND and TV. You do realize they are still a nationally recoginzed team that has a contract with NBC? TCU plays 2 tough games a year on Versus. You have picked a Bowl game for numbers. Why not give us you numbers when you play those power houses in your conference every Saturday. Now on to Arkansas…you think you add more than a state school who currently plays in the SEC? TCU is a small school that does not have much to offer when it comes to money, TV and politics which is what this is about. Enjoy what you have, but you have to be delusional to think you bring anything that Jerry or the Big12-2 would want.

  19. Alphaman says: Jun 17, 2010 12:55 AM

Steve W, You make some good points but the Big XII could make a compelling offer to Notre Dame by giving them the same package and power/influence that Texas has. Notre Dame added to the Big XII would generate TV revenue far greater than that of the Big 10 and ND, Texas and OU would get more than an equal share. If the Big XII is ever going to explore expansion then JJ is right…Notre Dame and Arkansas are the schools to target.

  22. DaveK says: Jun 17, 2010 6:43 AM

I realize you put that comment about winning in playoffs in there just to rile up Cowboys fans, but it’s unnecessary. Comments like that make me hesitant to take anything you write seriously.

Of course he wants Arkansas to move, but it doesn’t make sense for Arkansas, unless they are tired of the tough competition in the SEC.

  28. jbraider says: Jun 17, 2010 9:07 AM

Let’s be real – there’s no way Arkansas or anyone else would leave the SEC. And even though I always hated Nebraska, it is a shame to see the Nebraska / OSU / Texas rivalries disrupted.

  29. Alphaman says: Jun 17, 2010 9:58 AM

TCU doesn’t make sense for the Big XII for 2 reasons:
    1) The Big XII already has a huge foot print in Texas with 4 schools. They don’t bring any additional TV sets to the soon coming Big XII Network.
    2) The size of their stadium and their ability to fill it doesn’t fit with the Big XII. Good football program and baseball program, but not enough to get past point #1.
If the Big XII ever seeks to expand (and I think they should be proactive), they should put a compelling package together for Notre Dame. Since revenue (and essentially power) is not shared equally in the Big XII, they can promise ND elite status on par with Texas.

You simply still don’t get it. First of all, who give’s a rats ass what TCU did. Seriously, your argument is about how the Big 12 needs eyes in the DFW area and that’s not true. Hell, if I lived in DFW area, I’d be pissed if TCU’s didn’t blow away the competition, even if they were playing in the I Don’t Give A Crap Bowl. I’d be willing to bet that the other bowls involving Big 12 teams blew away the competition when they played and that’s because of the interest in the Big 12 that the area has. Do you think that the Big 12 championship was seen by everyone but the people in the DFW area or that it did as well as it did, even without TCU. Do you think that the kids in the DFW area grow up wanting to play for the Longhorns or Aggies or are they dreaming of staying to play for SMU and TCU? There was a time when SMU could buy a team but now that they’re not passing out money, the kids are heading south. Even now, with the resurgence of both programs, the Big 12 teams have the upper hand and even those coaches know that.

Nobody mentions why Notre Dame would want to take a paycut to join the Big 12/11. There is no benefit I can think of for the Irish, to join any conference.

Hey maybe you guys should research things about the italian army instead of just going on what you heard or read in a crappy school history book. The italians won two wars, the Italo Turkish war from 1911-1912 and Worl War 1. Why dont we talk about how america got slaughtered in vietnam or how the britsh lost their whole empire or how the french got thrown out of indochina. Oh yea how many wars has germany won?
