Bucs claim Mark Dominik's comments on Donald Penn were off the record

Earlier today, the folks at JoeBucsFan.com passed along to us a link to an eye-opening item in which G.M. Mark Dominik explained the team’s basis for not signing left tackle Donald Penn to a long-term deal.

Basically, Dominik said that Penn likes to eat too much.

We’re now advised that new Bucs spokesman Jonathan Grella has contacted JoeBucsFan.com to explain that Dominik’s comments — from an open Q&A session with season-ticket holders — were off the record.

Seriously.

Again, we’re not chapter-and-verse conversant in the finer points of textbook journalism.  But we didn’t know that the rules of “off the record” commentary applied when a person is speaking publicly before a group of non-reporters.

JoeBucsFan.com has removed the story containing Dominik’s quotes at the request of the Buccaneers.  We’ve received no similar request.

Meanwhile, we’re left to wonder whether there’s anyone at One Buc Place who isn’t hopelessly in over his or her head.

Don’t forget the Glazer family is over their head and under water.

Florio I was at that Season Tickets holder Q&A session and while he did mention Penn I dont remember this answer at all. Was it asked off the to the side or something? I got a pic of being at this event right here. http://twitpic.com/1xjnf3

I think the Bucs should consider hiring Matt Millen. He would fit right in at their organization right about now.

    Link or it didn’t happen.

sethness… exactly what other decisions has Dominik made that puts him on par with Millen? He just (maybe, IF the story is even true) made his first gaff. By all accounts, he aced the draft this year, and didn’t do half bad last year based on one year of assessment. When did Millen do THAT?
The general consensus is that the Bucs had no choice but to go with youth last off-season, and I think that one 3-13 transition season is an inexpensive price to pay for the Bucs to be sitting where they are right now: chock full of young players (most of which are 4-6 years away from their prime), a low payroll (these guys will get more money when they get a little closer to that prime), & facing a lightweight schedule. There is a lot to be excited about this season in Tampa.
The key question that has yet to be answered for me and most Bucs fans has to do with coaching. But I feel very good about Dominik’s decisions thus far.

While he may not have expected his comments to be made public, I don’t think he said anything out of line.

Question rocknrollsinger….. How do you ace a draft when a game hasn’t been played?

I argee with Dominik sucking it….he friggin cut brooks before brooks can play out his contract and retire, he signed crowell to possible take brooks spot, he signed ward, cut brooks, cut crowell because of injury, cut brooks, signed clayton, cut brooks, signed crowell again, cut brooks….need I say more?

I suppose when the Bucs go 9-7 or so this season perhaps the idiots will crawl back in their holes… but until then, keep your moronic comments coming so 6 months from now you can pretend like you never uttered them.

Wow, what an idiot we have here! Crowell was never cut, he was put on IR, he was re-signed this offseason but never cut. Brooks was cut… and no other team has picked him up… that might say something. Considering Crowell was signed to play the Sam and Brooks was a Will… how do you figure he was signed to take Brooks’ spot?

How come nobody ever points to the Bucs failure to sign Haynesworth as something they did right? Fat Albert said the Bucs actually offered him more money to play in Tampa, and I believe that even though everybody and their momma will tell you the team won’t spend money… but I also believe that the Bucs didn’t offer nearly as much in terms of a signing bonus and they protected themselves better than the Redskins did… which is why Fat Albert is in DC. Al pretty much retired the moment he put his signature on his contract and that was all he was ever looking for.

Check out the podcast here http://whatthebuc.net It’s a recording of the season ticket Q&A. Dominick is taking questions and I’m pretty sure he had to have seen the recorder. Glazer money “issues” aside people need to give Dominick and and Raheem a break. They’ve had one year under hamstrung conditions. When they’ve made a mistake they don’t hesitate to correct it. And no one is giving them credit for what they have done right. You have to give them at least the length of their contracts.

1.) Did you read Florio’s article? The site he reference took their article down, per request of the team.
2.) Though this may be difficult to believe, just because there is no website reporting it, that does not mean an event never happened or a conversation never took place. Even more shocking, not everything you read on the internet is true.

On a side note, no, there is not anyone at One Buc Place who isn’t hopelessly in over his or head – in fact there hasn’t been since Gruden and Allen were fired.
