You do have sources right Mike? Would it be that hard to actually call someone at One Buc and confirm whether Dominik might be correct rather than guessing aloud?

Florio, contact Stephen Holder of the St. Pete Times if you don’t believe Penn gained massive amounts of weight during the season. He was reporting in blog sessions during the game that management wasn’t happy with his weight gains… and that was over 6 months ago.

For all the flack Dom gets from his decisions, he is completely CORRECT in his statements on Penn. I do believe the guy should get paid because he is a beast but come on man, LOSE SOME WEIGHT!!! The guy just cannot stay in NFL shape for the entire season until this happens. It’s just sad that we have to have a guy watch this guy all the time just to make sure he doesn’t balloon to the size of a Mac truck. He’s a grown ass man not an overweight 12 year old boy.

Wow, what an editorial piece of garbage this story is.
He was tendered at the highest possible level because he has played well and shown great potential and because this team needs a left tackle to protect their franchise QB. Also, even with the concerns Dominick is expressing here (or “lying” about as you suggest), Penn’s still better and younger than who was available on the free agent market and the Bucs had much greater needs to address in the draft. Duh.
And for the past year, I’ve read numerous articles about Penn’s weight struggles BEFORE this holdout situation ever began. Several articles have reported that he has LOST 40 lbs during the off-season, so I guess he had it to lose.
Also, no article would be complete without a jab at the Glazers. Thanks yet again for that.

If anyone who is not in the bay area wants some insight into what kind of “boy genius” Dominick is read this quote from the Tampa Tribune last week.
Contrary to statements made last week by Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik, restricted free agent Donald Penn cannot be fined if he fails to report for next week’s mandatory minicamp.
The team acknowledged the inaccuracy on Thursday.
A week ago Dominik said, “Anybody who does not show up to mandatory minicamp is subject to fines, even Donald Penn if he hasn’t signed his tender.”

Perhaps you should actually WATCH some of the teams that you report on, Florio. If you actually did the research that should be done for your JOB, you would have seen the guy go Andre Smith 40-yard dash in the last third of the season. Second, there’s obviously a “financial situation” for the Glazers – they’re in debt for ManU, they don’t deny it. They tell us that it doesn’t affect the Bucs, not that everything is honky-dory across the pond.

Florio: I love coming to this blog, because you are usually very adept at seeing between the lines. But this time, you are way off. And I’ll address your three items line-by-line:
1. Because he is a starting left tackle in the NFL, so even if fatboy can’t stay away from the table, $3M is a very small amount.
2. Everyone has a “financial situation”, jackass. Wealthy, poor, or somewhere in between.
3. I can’t believe you of all people question this. Many players lose weight during the season, but not all of them. OF COURSE there are players that gain weight. As a Buc fan, I saw his declining play along with his increased waist. I’m sure the Bucs would have liked to have done something about it, but remember, an NFL team can’t be at a player’s house telling him what and what not to eat. Keep in mind that after training camp, the players don’t spend a whole lot of time with the team. Monday’s are off, Tuesday’s a film session, Wednesday and Thursday and usually practice in shorts and Friday is a walkthrough.
I agree that Dominik probably shouldn’t be so blunt, but maybe that’s what fatboy Penn needs.

The local media has been reporting his weight issues for a long time, Dominick’s comments are nothing new, only more direct and pretty blunt.
Otagwe is the only person in that situation in the league. It is highly likely a starting tackle gets offered more than $3m by somebody, so the Bucs played this one by the book. Why more Buc-bashing? Just more bad analysis here. Every team in the league did the exact same thing with their restricted free agents and you know it , so give us a break Florio.
The Bucs have been tight with the cash, but accusing them of calling poeple “FAT” to deflect from the issue is stupid.

its no mystery. horrible front office horrible ownership. team is horrible with making financial decisions. Just look at Michael Claytons deal. They are the east coast Raiders.
