Jerome Simpson could bounce Matt Jones off Bengals roster

nfl_a_jones2_300.jpgAs the Cincinnati Bengals try to qualify for the playoffs in two consecutive non-strike seasons for the first time in franchise history, one of the latest arrivals could be not long for the team.

Carlos “Big C” Holmes of the Dayton Daily News believes that receiver Matt Jones “looked like just another guy” during the team’s recent minicamp.

Holmes also says that he’ll be “flummoxed” if Matt Jones makes the roster over Jerome Simpson.

Jones, a first-round pick in 2005, had no team in 2009 after arguably having his best season in 2008.  Throughout his NFL career, the former Arkansas quarterback has faced claims of nonchalance and ambivalence regarding football.

  1. for all the props he was getting earlier, he’s now getting passed up by the guy that’s been a complete phantom the past 2 years? is it because simpson’s looking good, or cuz jones is looking so bad he’s making simpson look good??

  2. That would be sad. To be hyped up as much as this guy, and get dropped by a guy that could be one of the biggest reaches in the draft.

  3. Is that a mug shot or a team sanctioned photo? Throw in a logo or something? Skyline Chili?

  4. Of course, he has to throw “non-strike” in there. Not every team has the winning (steroid) tradition of your steelers florio. Then again, the stillers had ONE playoff season in their first 37 years! I wonder how many fans were packing the stadium then? Probably as many fans as a pirates game.

  5. Both of them are terrible and I can’t believe they are still in the NFL…….

  6. I don’t know the situation all that well. I liked Jones and Simpson coming out. I think Simpson might be the better fit there if he can show some level of consistency in catching the ball, as his vertical ability may open up some space.
That said, how connected is Carlos Holmes? The one thing I know about him was the whole Matt Ryan/Brian Brohm (and Joe Flacco) situation. He wrote a pre-draft piece (about 2 weeks pre-draft) claiming that sources were telling him that Brohm was the top pick for many teams and a lock to go in the first round. Went on and on about what a better prospect Brohm was and all his sources were telling him that everyone was wrong on Matt Ryan. Then, he blasted the Ryan/Flacco picks.

  7. Gotta love how people hype up a team with a few new guys, like team officials & Bengals Media personalities have done with Matt Jones…. Now, all of the sudden, he sucks. My question is this: I thought the Bengals were transitioning him to a TE??? If thats the case, wouldn’t Gresham have bumped him?
On a side note, what does that say about TO to not beat out Bryant & Jones?

What does Matt Jones have to do with the Steelers? Sounds like someone is overcompensating for an overdeveloped inferiority complex…

  9. Carlos Holmes is a clown. Nothing he writes should be taken seriously. By the way, Matt Jones has proven he can play in the NFL. Jerome Simpson has 1 reception for 5 yards in 2 full NFL seasons! The nincompoop Holmes may prefer Simpson, but no one else does.

  10. I actually thought this was about the fourth most interesting story in the DDN article.
It is really starting to look like the Bengals may be a special team this year.
You certainly can put their talent and attitude up against any other AFC team.

  11. we can use him in Cleveland . i think he can still play if properly motivated and no Doing “Bumps ” is not what i am talking about .

  12. Bubba has a half sister in Arkansas and her boy friends gay second cousin knows Jones and said no more Marching powder it’s now crystal meth
Bubba got it straight from someone who knows. I think.

  13. A guy named “Big C” Carlos Holmes used the word “flummoxed!” There’s your story, folks.

  14. Marvin’s been way too patient with Simpson. If the dude couldn’t sniff the field last year when they only had 3 WR’s, him, and the rookie FA punt returner, then pack his damn bags and show him the door.
Jones put up good numbers in ’08. I’ll give him some time to get back into football, as he hasn’t played in a 1.5+ years. I’d take his 6’6” coked out frame over the guy who wastes a roster spot.

  15. Were the Bengals “way too patient” with TJ Houshmanzadeh early in his career? Perhap they should have cut him after year 3 when he was averaging less than 250 yards per season and had only 1 TD in 3 years. Obviously they would have missed out on his next 5 years in which he had 5,000 and nearly 40 TDs.
When you draft a “project” player you have to give him more than 2 years to see what you have.

  17. he’s a ginger…
who in their right mind would use a 1st on a ginger.
this was another idiotic draft move by the Jags
then the Faguires went ahead and pulled a highly inteligent move again in this years draft.

  18. blueridge, I don’t know about that. Talked to a frew people that have seen minicamp film and they all say Jones looked BAD compared to Simpson, slow footed etc…
I’d be ok with them keeping either, if for no other reason than neither will be playing better than 5th WR barring injury. Simpson is a freak if he can get his head straight, he has HUGE hands, is fast as hell, and he has the ability to put up highlight plays, and Jones has proven he can be productive. I will accept whatever move they make (wierd to say though).
