Matt Ryan studying NFL's best quarterbacks

At the age of 25, Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan is well on his way to becoming one of the league’s elite quarterbacks. To help him get there, he’s taking a close look at the quarterbacks who are already at the top of the heap.

Falcons G.M. Thomas Dimitroff told Dennis Dillon of Sporting News that Ryan has been spending a lot of time this offseason examining the best quarterbacks in the league and trying to emulate them on the field.

“Matt Ryan is developing very well in my mind,” Dimitroff said. “He has worked very hard in the offseason to study what he deems as his issues, whether it was his decision making at times, whether it was his footwork, or whatever it was. . . . [Ryan] studied a lot of the upper-echelon quarterbacks in this league and I think that was very beneficial for him as well.”

Asked if it’s true that as Ryan goes, so go the Falcons, Dimitroff said that sounds about right to him.

“I am a firm believer, like a lot of people in this league, that you go as your quarterback goes,” Dimitroff said. “Not to put it all on one individual, because it is a team game, but it is very important for your quarterback to perform at a very high and consistent level to be successful in this league. If that answers your question, I guess you’d have to say true.”

He ought to be studying Joe Flacco. Flacco has more playoff games, more victories and better numbers than Matty Ice despite being picked 15 slots after him.

Him being inthe nfc,he doesnt come close to the top in his confrence

    Elite? Are you nuts.
Just because you hate Vick so much and want Ryan to outshine him, it doesn’t make it so.
If you have a college strength arm, it doesn’t matter how many great qbs you study, it won’t improve your weak arm.
If suffering a sophomore slump is a promotion to the elite status, then you might as well label 20 starters elite.
The comparison between him and Joe Flacco is no comparison at all, Flacco has done WAY more with WAY less to work with as Ryan has a pro bowl receiver and a soon to be hall of famer tight end and Flacco is still 3 playoff wins and 1 championship game ahead.
He is nothing more that a PICK MACHINE and a CHOKE. If 38 tds and 25 PICKS is the measuring stick for elite status, then even Tim Tebow has a good shot at your elite status.
It has been 6 long years since the Falcons won a playoff game, won a division title and played in a championship game.
    Sure he is elite.

Its amazing what Matt Ryan has accomplished in such a short time. Atlanta , after the Mike Vick/petrino Fiascos was in a horrible state. This Kid comes out his first year , plays great and leads them to the playoffs. Last year lead the team to a 9-7 season with a defense that had 90% of its starters 0ut. A healthy Falcons team will be SCARY next year.

    Joe Fluke-O???
    Really???
Man, you people are as dumb as you are stupid, as the saying goes.
Joe Fluke-O is a nothing QB with a great defense behind him.
You give Matt Ryan THAT Ravens defense, and Ryan would have had the Ravens in the Super Bowl the last two years.
Matt Ryan played on teams the last two years with defenses in the 20’s.
Joe Fluke-O has had the luxury of not having to score 24 points a game to win ever game, and Ryan, NOT Fluke-O, has has a more direct hand in the games his team has won.
    You people are ignorant.

Joe Flacco couldn’t hold Matt Ryan’s jock. If Ice had Joe’s running game and D, he would have 2 consecutive Lombardis.
Joe Flacco is good, but has maxed out, his offensive coordinator has to hold his hand. Matt Ryan will be commanding the offense this year, playing a lot more no-huddle. Combine that with a healthy Michael Turner, the Falcons are going to be a DC’s worst nightmare.
Compare the first 2 year stats of any elite QB and Matty Ice is well ahead of the curve on the path to greatness.
Be afraid doubters and haters. This decade will be known as the “ICE AGE”.

Again… any Fluke-O fan can’t say anything but b.s. because they don’t have any facts to back up anything they have to say.
The Ravens weren’t in the throes of disaster when they drafted Fluke-O.
But the Falcons were when the drafted Ryan.
What Ryan accomplished in his rookie year is something NO quarterback will ever again face.
Fluke-O just rode the coattails of his all-pro defense.
How well did Fluke-O play in those playoff games, again? What was his QB rating in the playoffs? Wasn’t he directly responsible for losing the playoff games they lost?
    Ryan doesn’t have Fluke-O’s defensive back-up.
Give Matt Ryan a top-10 defense, and Matt Ryan has two Super Bowl rings right now.
The Falcons were the most-injury decimated team last year, including Ryan, who missed three games. But no one talks about the fact that Ryan MISSED THREE GAMES to injury last year, and THAT’S why his numbers looked worse than the year before.
In every category, Ryan is a better QB than Fluke-O.
He had a much sharper learning curve than Fluke-O, was asked to do much more, more quickly.
Ryan, not Fluke-O was the Rookie of the Year.
And Ryan didn’t torpedo his team’s chances to win in the playoffs, you can thank Keith “Pile-Jumper” Brooking and the Falcons 26th-ranked defense for that, with all that “awesome” defensive talent a holdover from the Idiot Mora Junior Regime.
    So keep talking, Fluke-O Phonies.
You know who Fluke-O is, besides the owner of the hairiest, most ridiculous unibrow this side of Adam Carolla?
He’s the guy who mouths off to guys way bigger than he is, because his best friend who is 300-lbs of kick ass, is standing behind him.
The last two years, Matt Ryan hasn’t had a friend like that.
This year, if the Falcons have a defense in the top-half of the league, the they will win 12 games.
Anyone without bias who saw them play the Saints close last year, with all of the injuries they had to their offense and defense, would agree with that.

If you want a top 10 defense you need to hire a legit GM and Coach – top defenses are not given to you.
It’s not Flacco’s fault that the Falcons are hopeless.
Besides it wasn’t the Ravens defense that cause the CHOKE to throw 2 PICKS, cough up a fumble and throw a safety in the endzone against the Cardinals in the playoffs.
In 2009 Joe Flacco had higher passing stats than the choke except lower PICKS and he has played all 32 games, while the CHOKE had a “PHANTOM” turf toe…………

Some of you guys must like to watch yourselves type.
If we listened to experts like you, after hist first two years you’d have said Drew Brees has no future and should play in Canada.
Matt Ryan is a budding superstar at QB, maybe not better than Aaron Rodgers but I have a feeling the two will engage in a few playoff games against each other creating maybe one of the better NFC rivalries of this decade.
Ryan has only played two years, the Falcons were terrible coming in to the 2008 season and they had a ton of in juries in 2009, but despite that they had back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in franchise history. if you think #2 had nothing to do with that you are being intellectually dishonest.
And oh yeah, that “Pro Bowl” WR Roddy White drops a lot of easy passes, some in the end zone, as does Michael Jenkins on the other side.
I see Ryan taking his game up a notch this year and the Falcons taking the NFC South in the process, you heard it here first.

I’ve watched every pass that Matt Ryan has ever thrown in the NFL and he’s not an elite quarterback. Last year, he was average at most- terrible at times.
When Michael Turner wasn’t on the field, Matt Ryan looked extremely bad at times. Take it like this: I would rather have Eli Manning than Matt Ryan.
Here’s the deal: If Michael Turner stays healthy, the Falcons will go far. If he doesn’t, the Falcons will not make the playoffs.
In other words, the Falcons live and die on Michael Turner’s legs, not Matt Ryan’s arm.

If you look at Ryan’s stats, they are very similar to Michael Vick’s. And the excuses from Vick fans concerning his mediocrity is being dusted off and used for those Anti-Vick, Matty-Ice fans. (Roddy White dropped passes in the end zone… Michael Jenkins didn’t help him out… the O-line is weak… etc.)
The bottom line is this: in 2 years, I would be surprised if Matt Ryan is the starter for the Falcons then. I see lots of holes in his game and he is just mediocre. If the Falcons had a quarterback with Ryan’s intelligence but with better tools, it would be wonderful.

I’m a Saints fan and I’ll admit it: Matty Ice scares me a little b/c he’s the real deal. The team is getting close to making the push to the next level. Think about what all the championship teams have in common, and the Falcons are almost there.
They have good ownership, good coaching, a good young QB, and two quality receivers. All they need is a little more help on the D and one more receiver, plus keep Turner healthy.
Finally, Matt Ryan gets to learn a lot by watching the best QB in the league twice each year: Drew Brees.

Vick came to a team that was two years removed from being in the Super Bowl, Ryan came to a team that was in total disarray.
Ryan would have a playoff win had Keith Brooking not screwed up in coverage at Arizona in the Wildcard game, Falcons had that game won against the eventual NFC Champs if they could make a stop.
The Ryan/Flacco argument is a good one, I like Flacco so I’m not going to crap on him.
But Vick, come on, he was a joke of a QB, don’t be intellectually honest by stating otherwise.

Yep, look at your stats… very similar… just a few points difference.
And this is from someone who was an erratic running QB that didn’t study or work hard…
    against an “Elite” QB.
You can bash Mike Vick. Mike Vick bashes Mike Vick. Dude didn’t work hard and just relied on his running and strong arm…
But Matt Ryan’s numbers shouldn’t be that close to his and still be considered an Elite QB.
But here’s the biggest rub: Mike Vick went deeper in the postseason while he has thugging around, fighting dogs. What’s Matt Ryan’s excuse? The Defense? Roddy White and Michael Jenkins? Bad luck?
Here’s the bottom line: Matt Ryan is an OK quarterback. Average. Not Elite. I hope he does much better than last year, because he was atrocious. I hope he redeems himself, because at least Vick could run and win games when he couldn’t win with his arm. Matt Ryan doesn’t have that luxury.

  54. Paulitik says: Jun 21, 2010 3:40 PM

Nobody is hating on Flacco. Flacco is a good QB, but if you think he’s the reason for the Ravens; playoff success you are huffing paint.
Flacco is spoon fed his play-calls. Ryan is given more freedom. Both QBs have comparable talent around them, although the Ravens’ run game was healthier and Flacco had more deep threats last season. Ryan had to throw it away alot more with receivers not getting open which warps his completions percentages. Matt Ryan is more clutch in the 4th quarter as well. Look to the 08′ Bears, Broncos, Ain’ts games, and the 09′ Giants and Jets games.
It’s way too early to write the book on either Qb, but ask any expert who they would want commanding their offense. They pick Ryan everytime.

  55. ppdoc13 says: Jun 21, 2010 4:41 PM

@Paulitik – you are the one huffing paint if you think that Flacco had better deep threats than Ryan. Name one! Clayton – bust. Williams – didin’t play but a handful of snaps all season. Mason? – hasn’t been a deep threat for the last 10 years of his career.
Yes – our running game was better than Atlanta’s last season with the breakout year Ray Rice had, but is seems to me that Michael Turner had the same type of breakout the year before when the Falcons running game was better than ours.
Bottom line is that we have never had a receiver of the caliber of Roddy White. And while Heap is a very good TE he has never been confused with Tony G.
If you want to talk about huffing paint – look in the mirror. Flacco’s numbers are better then Ryans. Period. You can make all the excuses you want for that, but the truth is the truth.
Right now Flacco has had better career than Ryan. It is evident through the numbers even though his receiving corps has always sucked. He has played in 5 post season games and has won 3 of them even if he looked like Rothleisberger in his 1st SB.
We’ll know this year. Flacco has real receivers and a real running game with a good young offensive line. If his numbers are better than Matty Ice’s again we’ll be back on the board having you eat Falcon instead of Crow.
