Report: Cowboys tried to get Jammal Brown

Offensive tackle Jammal Brown ended up with the Redskins, but reportedly not before a division rival gave Dan Snyder’s team competition for the oft-injured former Pro Bowler.

Per Jeff Duncan of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the Cowboys “showed interest” in Brown prior to his Saturday trade to Washington.  The extent of their interest was unclear, but Dallas’ pursuit of Brown may hint at a few different things:
1. The Cowboys were not overly pleased with Doug Free during spring workouts.  Free is entering his first full season as a starter.  Though he flashed promise in spot starts last season, Free remains something of an unknown.
2. Jerry Jones’ team is concerned with 31-year-old right tackle Marc Colombo’s possibly imminent decline.  Colombo broke his right fibula last November.  Upon return in the playoffs, Colombo was embarrassed by Vikings defensive end Ray Edwards.  In the scenario that Dallas’ goal was to upgrade over Colombo, Free could kick over to his more natural right tackle position with Brown manning Tony Romo’s blind side.  Alex Barron would remain the “swing” tackle and Colombo would be released.
3. The Cowboys threw their hat into the Brown bidding just because they knew the Redskins wanted him.  Dallas and Washington are division foes.  Even if the Cowboys’ roster looks to contain significantly more talent, the Redskins are a threat, and will be even more so if they keep new quarterback Donovan McNabb off the injured reserve list.
Ultimately, the Cowboys’ interest in Jammal Brown may have been minimal.  Duncan does not provide details of a trade proposal, and the Redskins were able to snag an Opening Day starting offensive tackle for the relatively bargain price of a conditional third-round pick.  But it’s a topic worth exploring, and indicates that Jerry Jones’ franchise will be active on the waiver wire following training camp cuts.

I can always tell when I’m reading a non-florio article on this site – that’s definitely a complement.
    Oh, cowgirls sucks

Or they just need another tackle?? smh

  4. The_Game_Esq says: Jun 20, 2010 5:43 PM

Interest couldn’t have been that high considering what Washington gave up for him.

Why didn’t they draft a lineman before the 6th round? Alex Barron doesn’t cut it in the NFC East. Every team in the division upgraded their D-Lines in some way or another, yet the Cowboys downgraded on the line. They better hope that Dez Bryant, Miles Austin, or Jason Witten get open in seconds or Romo will be knocked on his ass on every play.

As a Redskin fan, I can tell you it’s probably the only time we beat the cowboys this season…..but I hope……

Wow. This is just bad reporting. The Cowboys had “interest” in Brown before the draft even began. They like what they saw out of Doug Free, but if him or Columbo go down, then they need a suitable back up. That was the interest. Enter Alex Barron, no more interest because they had their back up tackle and got rid of dead weight at the same time. Thus, the “interest” prior to Brown being traded. Or you could make up 3 scenarios that make no sense. Your choice.

“In the scenario that Dallas’ goal was to upgrade over Colombo, Free could kick over to his more natural right tackle position with Brown manning Tony Romo’s blind side.”
    Mr. Evan Silva, you FAIL!
Doug Free is a Left Tackle. He played Left Tackle throughout college, was drafted as a Left Tackle, practiced his entire time in Dallas as a Left Tackle, and played as a Left Tackle in the preseason for his 3 years when backing up Flozell Adams.
The fact that he started games at Right Tackle last season is only because he was the only capable Offensive Tackle left on the roster (besides Adams) after Colombo went down with injury. Nice to see you’ve spent more than 5 minutes of research on the subject.

It may be a nice pickup but Brown is unproven. This is like the tackles the Eagles picked up the last few years when people were screaming super bowl.
Brown has to play and perform before this trade looks good.

Simple research of the Cowboys tackle situation would indicate otherwise.

Hey for those of you ripping on the italian army the other day maybe you should do your research the italians won two wars the italo turkish war 1911-1912 and world war 1. Maybe we should talk about america in vietnam or about how the british lost their empire or how the french got kicked out of indochina. Oh yea how many wars has germany won?

  16. SpamRok says: Jun 20, 2010 7:42 PM

How is he unproven? He went to two probowls.

  17. twinkletoes says: Jun 20, 2010 7:53 PM

What this tells me is the asking price for Jared Gaither just firmed up. Unfortunately for my Raiders, Undead Al will probably not see the need to do this deal until Gaither is back in demand.
I was hoping that with the Hue Jackson connection, Undead may have dealt for Gaither by now, but maybe the coach has a negative view of him. Gaither has had the slacker label pinned on him, but that hasn’t stopped Undead before.

  18. SF Saints Fan says: Jun 20, 2010 8:17 PM

I would assume even if the Cowboys did show some interest in Brown, that the Saints would have wanted much more in compensation from them than they received from the Redskins. The Cowboys are much more of a threat to the Saints 2010 Super Bowl run and there is no need to help them with a pretty good player at a need position.
The Saints probably told the Cowboys, “second round draft choice” and Jerry Jones swallowed his tongue.

IlDuce – this is a football website. Let’s stay focused man. And Redskins fans really shouldn’t be trashing the Cowboys. That’s like me, as a Broncos fan, saying the Chargers suck. If the Cowboys are a joke, what’s that make the Redskins? It’s like me getting my butt whipped in a fight, getting up and calling the guy a sissy. It really makes no sense. Next will have the Bucs calling the Saints a bunch of losers..

  22. Branephood says: Jun 20, 2010 10:05 PM

Why is this a topic worth exploring? Who gives a crap if the Boys were interested? Skins got the scrub, that’s all that counts.

Hey Ilovefoolsball i have actually read many books and my grandfather was in the italian army. So you sit here and argue about football something that actually really doesn’t matter in life. You are worried about what some team or player is doing, what are they doing for you? They are making millions of dollars off of you while you are just an average person trying to make a living. Think about it.

I’m more interested in “LMFAO” at Redskin and Philly fans making fun of a team that has dominated them recently. afterall…………in the NFL it’s who is relevant lately. The Foreskins and the joke of the NFL that is the Eagles do not qualify in that category.

  28. IlDuce says: Jun 21, 2010 10:34 AM

Hey turgid like i said do some research, italy switched sides because they were invaded by the allies and the germans had control of them after they surendered to the allies. So they had no choice but to side with the allies to get the germans out. Your the idiot. The italians did make a terrible move on joining the war on the side of the germans during a time they were in debt from previous wars and mussolini getting rid of all the good and well trained generals when he took power because he didnt trust them. And many italians didn’t like mussolini and were forced to join the army. You should look up the folgore division or the bersagliere or the livorno or alpini divisions look at what they did. The italians were the first country to have navy seals called the decima flottiglia mas. Its not as simple as they just switched sides your a moron turgid.

That wasn’t luck. It was pure stupidity on the part of the 0-3gles. They decided to play politics instead of football.
