Champ Bailey's next contract won't be easy

Restricted free agents and young stars get all the attention, but long-time veterans with contracts running out have also been squeezed this offseason.

Mike Klis of the Denver Post points out that Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey is under contract for only one more season, just like Elvis Dumervil.  Bailey’s situation hasn’t received attention for a few reasons:

1. Bailey doesn’t make any noise about it.

2. Dumervil is underpaid in 2010, while Bailey makes $9.5 million.

A potential Hall of Famer, Bailey wants to play five more years.  His next contract will prove tricky.  Klis makes the case for Bailey as best defensive player in Broncos history, but the cornerback’s skills have declined.

It’s never easy for a player and team to agree just how much that decline is worth.

Man don’t the Skins regret trading this guy…would have been a top 10 all time Redskin. You think Clinton Portis makes that list?

Maybe the Redskins can trade Clinton Portis to the Broncos for Champ.

Your generalizations (“the cornerback’s skills have declined”) are a good sign that you only got hired for your writing skills.
    Oh wait.

If Perrish Cox learns well and takes off in 2010, trade Champ for a 1st rounder after the season! It’ll be a steal.

His age & years played may have been useful in this article.

McDouche will run him off. All signs of Shanahan’s success might be abolished. Also, Bowlen is done spending money on this team. The only hope for Bronco fans is for him to sell in the near future and hope the team isn’t bought by some asshole Walmart heir.

If Portis stays healthy… he should be the Redskins ALL-TIME Leading rusher this year… and he did it with a mediocre Offensive Line…
So… you tell me “You think Clinton Portis makes that list?”

lol slap, what up dude. How’s vegas?
    Champ gave up 0 TDs last year, Z E R O.
Rosenthal, for you to call him a potential HOF is outrageous. He could walk right now and be 1st ballot.
    Get a clue.

    @milehiclown:
what is wrong with that statement..? his SKILLS have declined is correct. He doesn’t have the burst he once had, he doesn’t have the agility he once had, he doesn’t have the ability to jump as high as he used to.. maybe it’s just me, but I think I just pointed out more than one skill making it skills.

@Gregg….rag info. Champ actually is at $13m due to a bonus of $2.5m. 2009 Champ was in the top 10 of CB categories even with ‘declining’ skills. Champ is 31 and has played 12 years.
Best owner, Pat Bowlen, see only value in that $13m and coach McDaniels knows how to use smart, tough, versatile, players like Champ Bailey.
NAH Gregg and Florio, things are looking great in Mile High. Broncos are back to being competitive for the AFC West and the playoffs.

VegasBronco, you may be smoking the same stuff I am to say the Donkeys will be in the playoffs. McDaniels has almost made sure of that. Your starting LT is gone for the year, you have a QB that can walk on water, but can’t throw the damn ball and your D is suspect! Good luck being competitive with the Queefs…..

Before people load up on Clinton vs. Bailey, remember that trade was ignited because Bailey was refusing to play for Washington anymore. And Clinton Portis did log many very productive years as a Redskin. Not even top 10 as far as bad Snyder era moves.

Champ Bailey for a first rounder, that’s some funny shiet.

  18. IV:XXMileHigh says: Jun 21, 2010 3:30 PM

No! Champ is great but we’re talking about Tombstone Rich Jackson, Tommy Jackson, Steve Atwater, Louie Wright and the underrated Karl Mecklenburgh ahead of Champ as all time best D player for the Bronx. you can even throw Billy Thompson slightly ahead.

  19. Orange&Blue says: Jun 21, 2010 5:24 PM

Hey 420fan: You’re an idiot. The Broncos starting LT is not gone for the season, in fact he should be back in time for preseason. And that QB you bash for no reason? He’s on the third string bud.
Lay off the bong, move out of your Mom’s basement, get a job and then maybe the rest of us can take you seriously. Until then, just shut up.

  20. comment_submission_error says: Jun 21, 2010 7:42 PM

Champ won’t be playing another 5 years in Denver, even as a safety. He might even be gone before McDaniels gets canned. As for Clady, I think Orange&Blue is hitting the bong if he thinks their LT will suit up in the preseason. And I’m not just saying that because I hate the Donks. I’m still pissed the Raiders took that gimp McFadden while Clady was still available.

  21. jahrasta311 says: Jun 21, 2010 9:36 PM

No (FAT) left tackle is going to tear a knee tendon in the offseason and then be back for the preseason, Orange&Blue…maybe you should START smoking.
