New York Post welcomes LaDainian Tomlinson to town

LaDainian Tomlinson’s honeymoon in New York lasted exactly three months.

A headline in Monday’s New York Post treated the all-time great like so: “Face facts, LaDainian is pretty much LaDone.”

The article below doesn’t make matters any better.

Bart Hubbuch credits an NFL scout that says Tomlinson looks “bulkier and a step [or three] slower” than he was in his prime.

“If you watch the films from the end of last year, the guy had nothing
left,” an accomplished G.M. told Hubbuch.
“It’s not a knock on him personally. All those carries are going to
catch up to anyone.”

We’re conflicted here.  We’ve echoed these sentiments all offseason, hammering the Jets for a foolish signing.  Then again, non-contact practices in June don’t mean much.

Either way, Tomlinson just received a preview of the media coverage he can expect if his play doesn’t improve this season.

That’s because people from New York are Ass Hats.

Did the person posting this even read the article? If he did, he’d realize that Hubbuch wasn’t quoting an NFL scout with the “step(or three)” comment. In fact, the only source attributed is an NFL General Manager. It pretty clearly states, “it doesn’t take an NFL scout.” This all begs the question – if you’re not going to read an article, why post about it?

    “Bart Hubbuch”
That’s your first problem. He was so horrible in Jacksonville, he was taken off the NFL beat and relegated to covering high school sports. How he got a job in NYC is beyond me. His dad must have gotten some favors.

tomlinson had an amazing career, but no question about it – he was actually worse than terrible last year.

it’s ok, the newspaper industry is LaDone too. and i use that term loosely here, considering the new york post doesn’t constitute a newspaper.

i love this false sense of entitlement the dreaded “new york press” has. It’s actually quite pathetic, especially considering the juvenile and meaningless questions they ask. Word is Rex Ryan told the guy to write this so he could tack it to LTs locker…..
Personally, I think we have to step back and consider that Brian Schott knows LT better than any one of us, was with him in his hey day and has seen him now….
If he were done I’d think the Jets would be the 1st to know it and would look to sign some insurance..
Hey, it could be 100% true – I just don’t think anyone can tell till the games start.. But, that doesn’t stop anyone from throwing #### on the wall and hoping they are right so, they can point to it later.

No, he doesn’t. No scout is credited. Hubbuch said that was his observation. Don’t go giving credit where no credit is due.
This is a prime example of a lazy reporter needing a story to fill his quota in June. Who should we trust, the word of some hack writer, or Rex Ryan, who actually scouted and signed the guy?

“If that role is any bigger than a handful of carries per game while Tomlinson provides locker-room leadership and tutors Greene and rookie third-down back Joe McKnight, then the Jets aren’t headed back to the playoffs, much less the Super Bowl.”
This quote makes me laugh my ass off. What kind of leadership does he think LT will provide ? How to be the best whiner in the league ? How to sulk properly while sitting on the sidelines in the playoffs ?

  21. zilla1126 says: Jun 21, 2010 12:01 PM

Talk to the same scout again after a few games – looking at the tape from last year he is probably right.
I imagine that you will see him slimmed down this year.
At the end of last year he was wore down from the workload of a feature back. He will be fine this year if he stays healthy.
Kevin Faulk lost a step or three in High School and is now slower than my Mom – doesn’t stop him from making clutch catches out of the backfield every game.

  22. thegoldengod says: Jun 21, 2010 12:02 PM

Thomas Jones never had much of a step…and still lost one. Even if LT shows no burst…this is a push. Jones couldn’t break anything…

  25. EverybodyGotAIDS says: Jun 21, 2010 12:15 PM

The problem with bringing in Tomlinson is that they have no veteran insurance if Greene goes down. They have a rookie and they have Tomlinson. Both would seem to be spell options, who whatever you get from them is a bonus. Neither should be relied on to carry the team for anything more than a game at the most. If Greene gets hurt and goes down for any length of time, the Jets are screwed. Not exactly like they can throw their way out of it.

    In your mind maybe.
Like Parcells says “RB’s are pretty much plug and play these days”…..
There are a ton of RB’s available out there that can contribute with a GREAT OFFENSIVE LINE!!!!!!
Every year guys come out of no where and put up top RB stats – Denver used to get guy soff the street to do it..
The Jets will have options and I can name more than 8 positions on this team I’d rather not see go down than a hit at RB….

    SC21 has a point.
but i think LT and JT (to a lesser extent) are more about psl’s than on the field productivity.
no question Holmes is a genuine threat the jets have picked up. JT will be able to make some huge plays here and there.
i dont think LT will though. i dont know that he had more than a single 20 yard run all of last year. (that has to be a stretch, i’ll check now ).

  48. jcjets says: Jun 21, 2010 1:33 PM

im skeptical about LDT, but we gotta see it on the field. TJ looked a step slow last year too..
But what bugs me is the hypocrites at the post. They accuse the jets of bringing in big name players to sell PSLs (which is probably true..) but they do the same thing everyday of the year with their sensational headlines. They write these big bold headlines, to get people to read and BUY the paper, and then you read the story, and its a small part of the article.

  49. BaltimoreSports says: Jun 21, 2010 1:47 PM

I see a lot a parallels between the Redskins and the recent Jets. Buying a team full of free agents will not get you far. You may see a year or two success but it’ll be short-termed and you’ll be hampered with aging players and large contracts down the road.

  50. stampats says: Jun 21, 2010 2:05 PM

“I see a lot a parallels between the Redskins and the recent Jets. ”
If you do then you are lacking in understanding of what both teams did…
The Jets didn’t spend money – They didn’t sign Brandon Marshall to a record setting deal, they couldn’t sign Marshall – they signed a few guys who have contracts already and are in the last years – Sure the Jets might not keep Cromartie, Holmes and Edwards long term but all 3 of those guys are playing this year at reasonable cost – Consider them Parcells-like “Hold the fort guys, except they are pretty damn talented…..
This is totally different than what the Skins did but, thanks

The Jets offensive line is NOT GREAT!!! Offensive lines, outside the Patriots from their run, tend to have one great year, then never live up to the hype again. While offensive lines make RBs look better than they hare, sometimes RBs make OLs look better than they are. Look back at last year and see how many carriers TJ turned NOTHING into 4-8 yards, at least a handful per game the first 1/2 of the season. If this line was so good, why was Sanchez constantly running for his life, throwing 21 picks last year???
The Jets will miss TJ. SG doesn’t have the body or ability to sustain 30 touches per game for 16 weeks. Once he became the featured back, he went down with a hammy in the biggest game of the year without getting hit. Jets will disappoint again.

Alot of the usual NY envy from the “middle of nowhere” residents I see. We call it like we see it here. Tomlinson is washed up and the NY media isnt going to sugar coat it. the Jets made this signing thinking it was going to help sell those PSL’s. IF Tomlinson or any of his apologists on here think hes going to pull his whining and complaining crap and not get run right out of town then you are sorely mistaken. Im not a Jet fan but I do watch the games. I dont expect anything positive out of this guy. He has had a great career but last year he reminded me of Shaun Alexander a few years ago when he got old overnight.

  59. Arizona Buckeye says: Jun 21, 2010 3:10 PM

To the Jets fans: Not only has he lost it on the field – wait until this diva gets going with the bad attitude, the selfish behavior, and the little spoiled brat temper tantrums when he doesn’t get his way. As a life time Charger fan, the last 3 or 4 years of his antics pretty much helped erase all he did on the field. There weren’t many fans that were unhappy with the departure of this ass.

Sorry Kappy, I disagree….TJ did not make the O-Line look better…I think they are one of the top five lines in the NFL.
They were 10th in sacks allowed out of 32
And first in rush yds……thats borderline damn good— great.
And you can also factor in Sanchez’s lack of expieriance may have lead to some of those sacks as well as pure misreads on the INTs
    It can go either way.
I hate to say it because I am a TJ supporter, but I did watch every game and he isnt very fast and that O-Line helped him looked good more then he helped them.

Well if there’s one thing you can say about New York City….it sure is a bunch of people all living in a small area. Yep. No doubt about that.
I’ve been to Beijing and Shanghai, both of which are bigger than NYC. Whole lot more people living in a small area…..yep. Lots of people all over the place. Why is that a good thing? I’ve been to cities all over the world (well, 4 continents) and usually the 1-3 mil cities are alot nicer and more livable than the 5+ mil cities. Chicago and London are really the only two that challenge that general rule.

  66. overkil2 says: Jun 21, 2010 5:00 PM

Who knows, maybe LT will have a good year, stranger things have happened.
The only thing is that usually RBs with all that wear and tear usually lose a step or two and let’s face it, he didn’t exactly light it up last year.
Forget about me being a Fins fan, I didn’t like that move. I don’t think it made them a better team than what they had last year. Maybe he’ll play really well and we’ll ass be eating crow, but I just don’t see it.
One of the worst moves that I saw in the last couple of years was the Browns pouning on Mangina when the Jets released him. How’s that working out?

Maybe you should tell your jests beat writers because they are all laughing at LT for being slow and washed up and scoffing at Greene for being overweight and injury prone. Even your RB coach is saying the jests have two starters. So if he’s comparing Greene to LT with his 3.3 ypc, I’d be pretty worried since we all know Sancheezy isn’t going to win any games for them.
