A couple days ago we noted that Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey has just one year remaining on his contract, and that an extension hadn’t become an issue largely because Bailey hadn’t made any noise about it.
But now Bailey’s agent is making some noise.
“Are we disappointed the Broncos have not approached us about a contract extension? Obviously, we are,” Bailey’s agent Jack Reale told Mike Klis of the Denver Post. “A player of Champ’s caliber deserves to have the option of an extended contract.”
Bailey is due a base salary of $9.5 million this season, plus a $3 million roster bonus and $500,000 workout bonus, so he doesn’t have much room to complain about his current deal. And Bailey just turned 32 years old, so the Broncos might not be looking to lock him into a long-term extension. But Reale says Bailey is as good as he ever was and deserves a contract that would allow him to remain one of the highest-paid cornerbacks in the league for years to come.
“This is a guy who essentially was a six-time Pro Bowler [if not for an injury in 2008] in his six years there,” Reale said. “Anyone with any kind of football knowledge knows his skills have not diminished, as evidenced by the fact he didn’t allow one touchdown in 80 passes thrown his way last year, played in 98 percent of the snaps and remains one of the best-tackling cornerbacks in the game.”
Reale hinted that if the Broncos wait too long, Bailey will want to go elsewhere.
“We hope the Broncos come to us sooner rather than later about a contract extension before the die is cast in another direction,” Reale said.
Maybe they can trade Champ Bailey to the Redskins for Clinton Portis. Oh wait…
McDaniels really has the magic touch. I say trade him to the pack for next years 2nd or 3rd round pick. I bet McD would take that in heartbeat.
Sorry Champ, your big payday’s are over.
Ain’t gonna happen Chimp. Enjoy what you got now.
Give him a lowball offer with guaranteed money about 20-25% higher than what he’s due to make this season, for 3 years (including this one). If he takes it, great. If not, let him come back to someone else at age 34 after the lockout and try to do better.
w/o a CBA it would involve mostly guaranteed $. That deal will never happen: “to remain one of the highest-paid cornerbacks in the league for years to come”—Not A Chance without a new CBA. With a CBA this would be a classic…lack of guaranteed money late in a backloaded contract—so when Bailey is completely over the hill in 2 years they could cut him without issue.
“This is a guy who essentially was a six-time Pro Bowler [if not for an injury in 2008] in his six years there,” Reale said.

Hey Reale, you lost me at “WAS”, dude is done like dinner.
Hey Champ GFY. 13 mil for this year isn’t enough ? Just another greedy scumbag of a player.
Champ thinks he’s going to get a new deal even though Dumeril deserves an extension, and isn’t getting one? Good luck with that!
Bailey is under contract and he willingly and happily signed it – I remember when he did. So he’s been good by not saying anything till now? Sorry dude, no sympathy.
“We hope the Broncos come to us sooner rather than later about a contract extension before the die is cast in another direction,” Reale said.
Does Reale’s cell phone not place calls? Isn’t it the job of an agent to approach the team?
Mark it down: Champ will not be a Bronco after his contract is up. He’ll be traded for picks. His age and declining skills, coupled with a lockout, are not going to help him at all with negotiating.
Also: This is his agent talking. Agents have as much invested in the CBA as the players. When a leech can’t find any more blood to suck, they move on to another host.
Champ isn’t even our best corner…Andre Goodman is our #1 corner. He needs to realize that.
Harrisonhits I’m guessing ur a Steelers fan, not based on ur name but by ur ability to publicly show ur lack of common sense. Where in this article or in the Denver post article (that I’m sure you read) did it read that he wanted more money this year and 13M wasn’t enough? I can’t believe how you retards make sh*t up just to made someone you don’t like look bad. Its better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open your yap and remove all doubt.
Seeing how Denver is giving him $12 million this year I don’t think there is any malcontent.
It’s just kind of early to extend when dealing with Dumervil’s and Kuper’s contract this offseason.
“Champ will not be a Bronco after his contract is up. He’ll be traded for picks.”
Did you actually read what you posted or are you that dense? He’ll be a free agent after his contract is up. Even with a contract, no one is giving up picks for an aging CB unless they have multiple 6th/7th rounders. By this logic, every team would wait until a player is too old to play and then trade his rights. Doesn’t work that way, uh, Champ. That’s why there are guys who can still play that get released.
Pay the man and while you’re at it pay Dumervil too. Both these guys deserve it. Champ may of lost a step, but there are few QBs in the league that dare throw Champs way.
Traded to the RAVENS!
people complaining about the money just don’t get it…not their fault you chose to ignore your dreams.
NAH, Champ will play 2010 under contract for $13m and see what happens during the season. If Smith and Cox do not impress then Champ may talk.
“Andre Goodman is our #1 corner,” says broncosteviep. Just before his mom tucked him in, presumably.
Bailey, or Reale, may not have to worry after this season about dealing with the same braintrust. If things go this way for Denver the way they’re shaping up, this front office will be out on the curb.
Assuming Bowlen is still awake.
