Rams re-sign Atogwe

In the end, safety O.J. Atogwe realized the Rams really did want him more than any other team.

Concluding a process that started more than a year ago when the Rams first placed the franchise tag on Atogwe, St. Louis announced Wednesday they signed Atogwe to a multi-year deal.  (UPDATE:  Jason La Canfora of NFL Network reports its for five years.)

Atogwe finally won his unrestricted free agency on June first and freedom proved overrated.  No other team brought Atogwe in for a visit, probably because they knew they couldn’t match the aggressive offers St. Louis already made.

Terms of the deal aren’t known yet, but it’s believed Atogwe will receive more than $5 million-per-season.  The above average safety’s return marks good news for a shaky Rams secondary.

The contract also gives Atogwe one heck of a reason to celebrate today, his 29th birthday.

It’s even tough to be the second least wanted OJ…sentenced to multiple years in St. Louis…

Above average?! Gregg what are you talking about? Him and Steven Jackson were the only bright spots on the Rams’ entire roster. He is a very good safety. Really underrated

Call you dad and get the final scores for the other games.
    Good Job Team USA.
O.J. You took the money over the chance to win. I can’t blame you really.

Third in INTs last year, he is a ball hawk, glad to have him back.

Or is he just a good player that just gets tackles/ints because no one else around him is any good?

The spin on this story is amazing. If Atogwe was that good, at least ONE other team would have made him an offer. He is a serviceable, above-average veteran player. But the fact is he fought for a right to be sought after by multiple teams and now he (or his agent or Rosenthal) is trying to spin the lace of ANY other offer as thought like he knew all along St. Louis would pay him the most money. Right.

    Good take on OJ, BoltsFan.
I too wondered why other ball clubs weren’t knocking down his door.

Hmmm, maybe a little Zach but really the strong safety James Butler is pretty good ranked only behind Polomolu I believe and they have a couple other young DBs that may be good. Laurinaitis is pretty good in the middle. I don’t think the defense was the problem. If you go back and look it’s not like they were getting trounced every game, in fact they only lost by a few points. The problem was the offense not staying on the field so by the second half the D was just gassed. Probably most of the points that were scored on them that cost the games were in the fourth quarter. Not saying it will happen this year and I’m not comparing them to “The Greatest Show on Turf but I have seen them go from worst to first before.

He probably wanted more money than a team was willing to pay for a player of his age (29). If the Giants didn’t have Antrel Rolle I guarantee he would have been paid what he wanted. Atogwe is a ballhawk

Look at the shit the Rams pulled off just to sign their Very Best Defensive Player. Pathetic team.
