With the weather experts predicting a much more active hurricane season in 2010 and with the peak typically coming between August and October, it’s not unreasonable to at least ponder the possibility of the September 9 regular-season opener between the Vikings and the Saints being disrupted by the threat of a storm making landfall in Louisiana.
Complicating concerns during the hurricane season will be the potential impact of a major storm on the ever-growing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
As it relates to the NFL’s annual kickoff event at the Superdome, the worries apply not only to the possibility of a storm hitting at or about the time the game is played, but also to the days and weeks preceding the event. If a storm were to hit New Orleans at any point before Labor Day, the city possibly would not be ready to host the event -- and the league would have to make other plans.
Hopefully, everything will be fine. But these are tense times for our friends in the region, and the nervous stomachs will extend all the way to 280 Park Avenue.
